1 Chronicles 17

Yahweh’s Covenant with David
1And as David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I live in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under tent curtains.” 2And Nathan said to David, “Whatever is in your heart, do, for God is with you.”
3And it happened that same night the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4“Go and say to David my servant, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You are not to build a house for me to live in, 5for I have not lived in a house from the day that I brought out Israel unto this day. I have been from tent to tent and from tabernacle to tabernacle. 6In every place I have moved about, did I say one word with the judges of Israel I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, ‘Why have you not built for me a house of cedar?’ ” ’ 7So now, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be leader over my people Israel, 8and I have been with you wherever you went and have cut down your enemies from before you and will make a name for you, like the name of the great ones on the earth. 9And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them,#Or “him” (i.e., the nation) and they#Or “he” shall dwell in their#Or “his” place and be in anguish no longer. And wicked men will no longer wear them down as before, 10from the day that I commanded judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue your enemies, and I declare to you that Yahweh will build for you a house.#Or “household” (that is, a dynasty) 11And it shall be that when your days are fulfilled to go and sleep with your ancestors,#Or “fathers” then I will raise up your seed after you, who will be one of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12He himself will build for me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13I myself will be a father to him, and he himself will be a son to me. And I will not remove my steadfast love from him as I took it away from whoever was before you. 14And I will establish him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.” ’ ” 15According to all these words and according to all this revelation, thus did Nathan speak to David.
David’s Prayer
16Then King David went and sat before Yahweh and said, “Who am I, O Yahweh God, and what is my house that you have brought me thus far? 17And this was a small matter in your eyes, O God. And you have spoken concerning the house of your servant for a long time and have shown me future generations to come,#Literally “with a turn of humankind ascending” O Yahweh God. 18What more#Literally “What to add again” can David do to you for honoring your servant? Now you know your servant. 19O Yahweh, for the sake of your servant and according to your heart you have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things. 20O Yahweh, there is none like you, and there is no God except you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21And who is like your people Israel, the one nation upon earth whom God went to redeem for himself, to establish for you a reputation#Or “name” for great and awesome things, to drive out nations from before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22And you made your people Israel an everlasting nation for yourself. And you, O Yahweh, became their God. 23So now, O Yahweh, let the word that you spoke to your servant and to his house be established forever, that you might do what you have spoken. 24And let your name be established and be magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God, and may the house of David your servant be established before you.’ 25For you, my God, have informed#Literally “have opened the ear of” your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore, your servant has found courage to pray before you. 26So now, O Yahweh, you yourself are God, and you have spoken to your servant this good thing. 27And now may you begin to bless the house of your servant to continue forever#Literally “to be forever” before you, for you, O Yahweh, have blessed. And it will be blessed forever.”

The Lord's Message to David
(2 Samuel 7.1-17)
1Soon after David moved into his new palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Look around! I live in a palace made of cedar, but the sacred chest is kept in a tent.”
2Nathan replied, “The Lord is with you—do what you want.”
3That night, the Lord told Nathan 4to go to David and tell him:
David, you are my servant, so listen carefully: You are not the one to build a temple for me. 5I didn't live in a temple when I brought my people out of Egypt, and I don't live in one now. A tent has always been my home wherever I have gone with them. 6I chose special leaders and told them to be like shepherds for my people Israel. But did I ever say anything to even one of them about building a cedar temple for me?
7David, this is what I, the Lord All-Powerful, say to you. I brought you in from the fields where you took care of sheep, and I made you the leader of my people. 8Wherever you went, I helped you and destroyed your enemies right in front of your eyes. I have made you one of the most famous people in the world.
9I have given my people Israel a land of their own where they can live in peace. They will no longer have to tremble with fear—evil nations won't bother them, as they did 10when I let judges rule my people, and I will keep your enemies from attacking you.
Now I promise that like you, your descendants will be kings. 11I'll choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried beside your ancestors. I'll make him a strong ruler, 12and no one will be able to take his kingdom away from him. He will be the one to build a temple for me. 13#2 Co 6.18; He 1.5. I will be like a father to him, and he will be like a son to me. I will never put an end to my agreement with him, as I put an end to my agreement with Saul, who was king before you. 14I will make sure that your son and his descendants will rule my people and my kingdom forever.
15Nathan told David exactly what the Lord had said.
David Gives Thanks to the Lord
(2 Samuel 7.18-29)
16David went into the tent he had set up for the sacred chest. He sat there and prayed:
Lord God, my family and I don't deserve what you have already done for us, 17and yet you have promised to do even more for my descendants. You are treating me as if I am a very important person.#17.17 You are treating me … person: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. 18I am your servant, and you know my thoughts. What else can I say, except that you have honored me? 19It was your choice to do these wonderful things for me and to make these promises.
20No other god is like you, Lord—you alone are God. Everything we have heard about you is true. 21And there is no other nation on earth like Israel, the nation you rescued from slavery in Egypt to be your own. You became famous by using great and wonderful miracles to force other nations and their gods out of your land, so that your people could live here. 22You have chosen Israel to be your people forever, and you have become their God.
23 Lord God, please do what you promised me and my descendants. 24Then you will be famous forever, and everyone will say, “The Lord All-Powerful rules Israel and is their God.”
My kingdom will be strong, 25because you are my God, and you have promised that my descendants will be kings. That's why I have the courage to pray to you like this, even though I am only your servant.
26You are the Lord God, and you have made this good promise to me. 27Now please bless my descendants forever, and let them always be your chosen kings. You have already blessed my family, and I know you will bless us forever.
