Psalms 79
79
A Psalm of Asaph.
1O God, nations have come into Thy inheritance, They have defiled Thy holy temple, They made Jerusalem become heaps,
2They gave the dead bodies of Thy servants Food for the fowls of the heavens, The flesh of Thy saints For the wild beast of the earth.
3They have shed their blood As water round about Jerusalem, And there is none burying.
4We have been a reproach to our neighbours, A scorn and a derision to our surrounders.
5Till when, O Jehovah? art Thou angry for ever? Thy jealousy doth burn as fire.
6Pour Thy fury on the nations who have not known Thee, And on kingdoms that have not called in Thy name.
7For [one] hath devoured Jacob, And his habitation they have made desolate.
8Remember not for us the iniquities of forefathers, Haste, let Thy mercies go before us, For we have been very weak.
9Help us, O God of our salvation, Because of the honour of Thy name, And deliver us, and cover over our sins, For Thy name's sake.
10Why do the nations say, ‘Where [is] their God?’ Let be known among the nations before our eyes, The vengeance of the blood of Thy servants that is shed.
11Let the groaning of the prisoner come in before Thee, According to the greatness of Thine arm, Leave Thou the sons of death.
12And turn Thou back to our neighbours, Sevenfold unto their bosom, their reproach, Wherewith they reproached Thee, O Lord.
13And we, Thy people, and the flock of Thy pasture, We give thanks to Thee to the age, To all generations we recount Thy praise!

Psalm 79

How Long, O Lord?
A Psalm of #Ps. 50, titleAsaph.
1O God, #Lam. 1:10 the nations have come into your #Ex. 15:17; See Ps. 74:2 inheritance;
they have defiled your #[Ps. 74:7] holy temple;
they have #Jer. 26:18; Mic. 3:12; [2 Kgs. 25:9, 10]; 2 Chr. 36:19laid Jerusalem in ruins.
2They have given #Deut. 28:26; Jer. 7:33; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20 the bodies of your servants
to the birds of the heavens for food,
the flesh of your #See Ps. 50:5 faithful to #Ps. 74:19the beasts of the earth.
3They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was #Jer. 14:16; [2 Kgs. 9:10]no one to bury them.
4We have become #Dan. 9:16; See Ps. 44:13a taunt to our neighbors,
#
Dan. 9:16; See Ps. 44:13 mocked and derided by those around us.
5 # [Ps. 74:10; 80:4] How long, O Lord? Will you be angry #[Ps. 74:1; 85:5]; See Ps. 13:1 forever?
Will your #Ps. 78:58 jealousy #Ps. 78:21; 89:46burn like fire?
6 # Cited Jer. 10:25; [Zeph. 3:8] Pour out your anger on the nations
that #2 Thess. 1:8 do not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that #See Ps. 14:4do not call upon your name!
7For they have devoured Jacob
and laid waste his habitation.
8 #
Isa. 64:9 Do not remember against us #Jer. 11:10 our former iniquities;#79:8 Or the iniquities of former generations
let your compassion come speedily to meet us,
for we are #Ps. 116:6; 142:6brought very low.

2 Chr. 14:11 Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us, and #See Ps. 65:3 atone for our sins,
for your #Jer. 14:7, 21; See Ps. 23:3name’s sake!
10 # See Ps. 42:3 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let #See Ps. 94:1the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants
be known among the nations before our eyes!
11Let #Ps. 102:20 the groans of the prisoners come before you;
according to your great power, preserve those #[1 Sam. 20:31]doomed to die!
12Return #Gen. 4:15, 24; Lev. 26:21, 28; Prov. 6:31 sevenfold into the #Isa. 65:6, 7; Jer. 32:18 lap of our neighbors
the #See Ps. 74:10taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!
13But we your people, the #See Ps. 74:1 sheep of your pasture,
will #Isa. 43:21give thanks to you forever;
from generation to generation we will recount your praise.
