Luke 22
22
1And the feast of the unleavened food was coming nigh, that is called Passover,
2and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they may take him up, for they were afraid of the people.
3And the Adversary entered into Judas, who is surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve,
4and he, having gone away, spake with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might deliver him up to them,
5and they rejoiced, and covenanted to give him money,
6and he agreed, and was seeking a favourable season to deliver him up to them without tumult.
7And the day of the unleavened food came, in which it was behoving the passover to be sacrificed,
8and he sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Having gone on, prepare to us the passover, that we may eat;’
9and they said to him, ‘Where wilt thou that we might prepare?’
10And he said to them, ‘Lo, in your entering into the city, there shall meet you a man, bearing a pitcher of water, follow him to the house where he doth go in,
11and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where the passover with my disciples I may eat?
12and he shall show you a large upper room furnished, there make ready;’
13and they, having gone away, found as he hath said to them, and they made ready the passover.
14And when the hour come, he reclined (at meat), and the twelve apostles with him,
15and he said unto them, ‘With desire I did desire to eat this passover with you before my suffering,
16for I say to you, that no more may I eat of it till it may be fulfilled in the reign of God.’
17And having taken a cup, having given thanks, he said, ‘Take this and divide to yourselves,
18for I say to you that I may not drink of the produce of the vine till the reign of God may come.’
19And having taken bread, having given thanks, he brake and gave to them, saying, ‘This is my body, that for you is being given, this do ye — to remembrance of me.’
20In like manner, also, the cup after the supping, saying, ‘This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, that for you is being poured forth.
21‘But, lo, the hand of him delivering me up [is] with me on the table,
22and indeed the Son of Man doth go according to what hath been determined; but woe to that man through whom he is being delivered up.’
23And they began to reason among themselves, who then of them it may be, who is about to do this thing.
24And there happened also a strife among them — who of them is accounted to be greater.
25And he said to them, ‘The kings of the nations do exercise lordship over them, and those exercising authority upon them are called benefactors;
26but ye [are] not so, but he who is greater among you — let him be as the younger; and he who is leading, as he who is ministering;
27for who is greater? he who is reclining (at meat), or he who is ministering? is it not he who is reclining (at meat)? and I — I am in your midst as he who is ministering.
28‘And ye — ye are those who have remained with me in my temptations,
29and I appoint to you, as my Father did appoint to me, a kingdom,
30that ye may eat and may drink at my table, in my kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.’
31And the Lord said, ‘Simon, Simon, lo, the Adversary did ask you for himself to sift as the wheat,
32and I besought for thee, that thy faith may not fail; and thou, when thou didst turn, strengthen thy brethren.’
33And he said to him, ‘Sir, with thee I am ready both to prison and to death to go;’
34and he said, ‘I say to thee, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice thou mayest disown knowing me.’
35And he said to them, ‘When I sent you without bag, and scrip, and sandals, did ye lack anything?’ and they said, ‘Nothing.’
36Then said he to them, ‘But, now, he who is having a bag, let him take [it] up, and in like manner also a scrip; and he who is not having, let him sell his garment, and buy a sword,
37for I say to you, that yet this that hath been written it behoveth to be fulfilled in me: And with lawless ones he was reckoned, for also the things concerning me have an end.’
38And they said, ‘Sir, lo, here [are] two swords;’ and he said to them, ‘It is sufficient.’
39And having gone forth, he went on, according to custom, to the mount of the Olives, and his disciples also followed him,
40and having come to the place, he said to them, ‘Pray ye not to enter into temptation.’
41And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying,
42saying, ‘Father, if Thou be counselling to make this cup pass from me — ; but, not my will, but Thine be done.’ —
43And there appeared to him a messenger from heaven strengthening him;
44and having been in agony, he was more earnestly praying, and his sweat became, as it were, great drops of blood falling upon the ground.
45And having risen up from the prayer, having come unto the disciples, he found them sleeping from the sorrow,
46and he said to them, ‘Why do ye sleep? having risen, pray that ye may not enter into temptation.’
47And while he is speaking, lo, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them, and he came nigh to Jesus to kiss him,
48and Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, with a kiss the Son of Man dost thou deliver up?’
49And those about him, having seen what was about to be, said to him, ‘Sir, shall we smite with a sword?’
50And a certain one of them smote the servant of the chief priest, and took off his right ear,
51and Jesus answering said, ‘Suffer ye thus far,’ and having touched his ear, he healed him.
52And Jesus said to those having come upon him — chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and elders — ‘As upon a robber have ye come forth, with swords and sticks?
53while daily I was with you in the temple, ye did stretch forth no hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of the darkness.’
54And having taken him, they led and brought him to the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following afar off,
55and they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them,
56and a certain maid having seen him sitting at the light, and having earnestly looked at him, she said, ‘And this one was with him!’
57and he disowned him, saying, ‘Woman, I have not known him.’
58And after a little, another having seen him, said, ‘And thou art of them!’ and Peter said, ‘Man, I am not.’
59And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, ‘Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;’
60and Peter said, ‘Man, I have not known what thou sayest;’ and presently, while he is speaking, a cock crew.
61And the Lord having turned did look on Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him — ‘Before a cock shall crow, thou mayest disown me thrice;’
62and Peter having gone without, wept bitterly.
63And the men who were holding Jesus were mocking him, beating [him];
64and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, ‘Prophesy who he is who smote thee?’
65and many other things, speaking evilly, they spake in regard to him.
66And when it became day there was gathered together the eldership of the people, chief priests also, and scribes, and they led him up to their own sanhedrim,
67saying, ‘If thou be the Christ, tell us.’ And he said to them, ‘If I may tell you, ye will not believe;
68and if I also question [you], ye will not answer me or send me away;
69henceforth, there shall be the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God.’
70And they all said, ‘Thou, then, art the Son of God?’ and he said unto them, ‘Ye say [it], because I am;’
71and they said, ‘What need yet have we of testimony? for we ourselves did hear [it] from his mouth.’

The Plot to Kill Jesus
(Matthew 26:1–5, 14–16; Mark 14:1–2, 10–11; John 11:45–57)
1The Festival of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, was near. 2The chief priests and the experts in Moses’ Teachings were looking for some way to kill Jesus. However, they were afraid of the people.
3Then Satan entered Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles. 4Judas went to the chief priests and the temple guards and discussed with them how he could betray Jesus. 5They were pleased and agreed to give him some money. 6So Judas promised to do it. He kept looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them when there was no crowd.
The Passover
(Matthew 26:17–20; Mark 14:12–17)
7The day came during the Festival of Unleavened Bread when the Passover lamb had to be killed. 8Jesus sent Peter and John and told them, “Go, prepare the Passover lamb for us to eat.”
9They asked him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
10He told them, “Go into the city, and you will meet a man carrying a jug of water. Follow him into the house he enters. 11Tell the owner of the house that the teacher asks, ‘Where is the room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ 12He will take you upstairs and show you a large furnished room. Get things ready there.”
13The disciples left. They found everything as Jesus had told them and prepared the Passover.
14When it was time to eat the Passover meal, Jesus and the apostles were at the table. 15Jesus said to them, “I’ve had a deep desire to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16I can guarantee that I won’t eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in God’s kingdom.” 17Then he took a cup and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He said, “Take this, and share it. 18I can guarantee that from now on I won’t drink this wine until God’s kingdom comes.”
The Lord’s Supper
(Matthew 26:26–30; Mark 14:22–26)
19Then Jesus took bread and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body, which is given up for you. Do this to remember me.”
20When supper was over, he did the same with the cup. He said, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new promise #22:20 Or “testament,” or “covenant.” made with my blood.”
Jesus Knows Who Will Betray Him
(Matthew 26:21–25; Mark 14:18–21; John 13:21–30)
21“The hand of the one who will betray me is with me on the table. 22The Son of Man is going to die the way it has been planned for him. But how horrible it will be for that person who betrays him.”
23So they began to discuss with each other who could do such a thing.
An Argument about Greatness
24Then a quarrel broke out among the disciples. They argued about who should be considered the greatest.
25Jesus said to them, “The kings of nations have power over their people, and those in authority call themselves friends of the people. 26But you’re not going to be that way! Rather, the greatest among you must be like the youngest, and your leader must be like a servant. 27Who’s the greatest, the person who sits at the table or the servant? Isn’t it really the person who sits at the table? But I’m among you as a servant.
28“You have stood by me in the troubles that have tested me. 29So as my Father has given me a kingdom, I’m giving it to you. 30You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will also sit on thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
(Matthew 26:31–35; Mark 14:27–31; John 13:36–38)
31 ⌞Then the Lord said,⌟ “Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to have you apostles for himself. He wants to separate you from me as a farmer separates wheat from husks. 32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. So when you recover, strengthen the other disciples.”
33But Peter said to him, “Lord, I’m ready to go to prison with you and to die with you.”
34Jesus replied, “Peter, I can guarantee that the rooster won’t crow tonight until you say three times that you don’t know me.”
35Then Jesus said to them, “When I sent you out without a wallet, traveling bag, or sandals, you didn’t lack anything, did you?”
“Not a thing!” they answered.
36Then he said to them, “But now, the person who has a wallet and a traveling bag should take them along. The person who doesn’t have a sword should sell his coat and buy one. 37I can guarantee that the Scripture passage which says, ‘He was counted with criminals,’ must find its fulfillment in me. Indeed, whatever is written about me will come true.”
38The disciples said, “Lord, look! Here are two swords!”
Then Jesus said to them, “That’s enough!”
Jesus Prays in the Garden of Gethsemane
(Matthew 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42)
39Jesus went out ⌞of the city⌟ to the Mount of Olives as he usually did. His disciples followed him. 40When he arrived, he said to them, “Pray that you won’t be tempted.”
41Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, 42“Father, if it is your will, take this cup ⌞of suffering⌟ away from me. However, your will must be done, not mine.”
43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. 44So he prayed very hard in anguish. His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.#22:44 Some manuscripts and translations omit verses 43 and 44.
45When Jesus ended his prayer, he got up and went to the disciples. He found them asleep and overcome with sadness. 46He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up, and pray that you won’t be tempted.”
Jesus Is Arrested
(Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; John 18:1–14)
47While he was still speaking to the disciples, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the twelve apostles, was leading them. He came close to Jesus to kiss him.
48Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you intend to betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49The men who were with Jesus saw what was going to happen. So they asked him, “Lord, should we use our swords to fight?” 50One of the disciples cut off the right ear of the chief priest’s servant.
51But Jesus said, “Stop! That’s enough of this.” Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple guards, and leaders who had come for him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? 53I was with you in the temple courtyard every day and you didn’t try to arrest me. But this is your time, when darkness rules.”
54So they arrested Jesus and led him away to the chief priest’s house.
Peter Denies Jesus
(Matthew 26:69–75; Mark 14:66–72; John 18:15–18, 25–27)
Peter followed at a distance.
55Some men had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard. As they sat together, Peter sat among them. 56A female servant saw him as he sat facing the glow of the fire. She stared at him and said, “This man was with Jesus.”
57But Peter denied it by saying, “I don’t know him, woman.”
58A little later someone else saw Peter and said, “You are one of them.”
But Peter said, “Not me!”
59About an hour later another person insisted, “It’s obvious that this man was with him. He’s a Galilean!”
60But Peter said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61Then the Lord turned and looked directly at Peter. Peter remembered what the Lord had said: “Before a rooster crows today, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” 62Then Peter went outside and cried bitterly.
The Trial in Front of the Jewish Council
(Matthew 26:57–68; Mark 14:53–65)
63The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him as they beat him. 64They blindfolded him and said to him, “Tell us who hit you.” 65They also insulted him in many other ways.
66In the morning the council of the people’s leaders, the chief priests and the experts in Moses’ Teachings, gathered together. They brought Jesus in front of their highest court and asked him, 67“Tell us, are you the Messiah?”
Jesus said to them, “If I tell you, you won’t believe me. 68And if I ask you, you won’t answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be in the honored position—the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.”
70Then all of them said, “So you’re the Son of God?”
Jesus answered them, “You’re right to say that I am.”
71Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We’ve heard him say it ourselves.”
