1 Samuel 27
27
1And David saith unto his heart, ‘Now am I consumed one day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing for me better than that I diligently escape unto the land of the Philistines, and Saul hath been despairing of me — of seeking me any more in all the border of Israel, and I have escaped out of his hand.’
2And David riseth, and passeth over, he and six hundred men who [are] with him, unto Achish son of Maoch king of Gath;
3and David dwelleth with Achish in Gath, he and his men, each one with his household, [even] David and his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelitess.
4And it is declared to Saul that David hath fled to Gath, and he hath not added any more to seek him.
5And David saith unto Achish, ‘If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, they give to me a place in one of the cities of the field, and I dwell there, yea, why doth thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?’
6And Achish giveth to him in that day Ziklag, therefore hath Ziklag been to the kings of Judah till this day.
7And the number of the days which David hath dwelt in the field of the Philistines [is] days and four months;
8and David goeth up and his men, and they push unto the Geshurite, and the Gerizite, and the Amalekite, (for they are inhabitants of the land from of old), as thou comest in to Shur and unto the land of Egypt,
9and David hath smitten the land, and doth not keep alive man and woman, and hath taken sheep, and oxen, and asses, and camels, and garments, and turneth back, and cometh in unto Achish.
10And Achish saith, ‘Whither have ye pushed to-day?’ and David saith, ‘Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelite, and unto the south of the Kenite.’
11Neither man nor woman doth David keep alive, to bring in [word] to Gath, saying, ‘Lest they declare [it] against us, saying, Thus hath David done, and thus [is] his custom all the days that he hath dwelt in the fields of the Philistines.’
12And Achish believeth in David, saying, ‘He hath made himself utterly abhorred among his people, in Israel, and hath been to me for a servant age-during.’

1 Samuel 27
27
David Returns to Achish
1Then David thought to himself,#Literally “said to his heart” “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul! There is nothing better for me but that I must certainly escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will desist from searching for me further in all of the territories of Israel, and so I will escape from his hand.” 2So David got up and crossed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, the king of Gath. 3David settled with Achish in Gath, he and his men, each with his household.#Or “family” David took along his two wives Ahinoam from Jezreel#Literally “the Jezreelitess” and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 4And it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath, so he no longer searched for him.#Literally “he does Qere did not again to seek him longer”
5Then David said to Achish, “Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, then let them give me a place in one of the country towns#Literally “towns of the open field” that I can live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city#Literally “the city of the king” with you?” 6So Achish gave him Ziklag on that day. (Therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until this day.) 7The number of days that David lived in the countryside of the Philistines was one year and four months.
8Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites and the Girzites and the Amalekites, for they had been living in the land for a long time in the direction of#Literally “as you come” Shur and as far as#Literally “up to” the land of Egypt. 9So David struck the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive; he took the sheep,#Hebrew “flock,” referring to either sheep or goats or both the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned and came to Achish. 10And Achish said, “Against whom have you raided today?” David said, “Against the Negev of Judah and against the Negev of the Jerahmeelites and against the Negev of the Kenites.” 11And David did not leave alive a man or a woman to bring them back to Gath, thinking,#Hebrew “saying” “So that they will not report about us, saying, ‘David did thus and so.’ ” Thus was his practice all the days that he lived in the countryside of the Philistines. 12And Achish trusted David, saying, “He has made himself utterly hated#Literally “Stinking he stink” = “he really stinks” among his people in Israel, and he will be my servant forever.”
