1 Samuel 2
2
1And Hannah prayeth, and saith: ‘My heart hath exulted in Jehovah, My horn hath been high in Jehovah, My mouth hath been large over mine enemies, For I have rejoiced in Thy salvation.
2There is none holy like Jehovah, For there is none save Thee, And there is no rock like our God.
3Ye multiply not — ye speak haughtily — The old saying goeth out from your mouth, For a God of knowledge [is] Jehovah, And by Him actions are weighed.
4Bows of the mighty are broken, And the stumbling have girded on strength.
5The satiated for bread hired themselves, And the hungry have ceased. While the barren hath borne seven, And she abounding with sons hath languished.
6 Jehovah putteth to death, and keepeth alive, He bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.
7 Jehovah dispossesseth, and He maketh rich, He maketh low, yea, He maketh high.
8He raiseth from the dust the poor, From a dunghill He lifteth up the needy, To cause [them] to sit with nobles, Yea, a throne of honour He doth cause them to inherit, For to Jehovah [are] the fixtures of earth, And He setteth on them the habitable world.
9The feet of His saints He keepeth, And the wicked in darkness are silent, For not by power doth man become mighty.
10 Jehovah — broken down are His adversaries, Against them in the heavens He thundereth: Jehovah judgeth the ends of earth, And giveth strength to His king, And exalteth the horn of His anointed.’
11And Elkanah goeth to Ramath, unto his house, and the youth hath been serving Jehovah, [in] the presence of Eli the priest;
12and the sons of Eli [are] sons of worthlessness, they have not known Jehovah.
13And the custom of the priests with the people [is]: any man sacrificing a sacrifice — then hath the servant of the priest come in when the flesh is boiling, and the hook of three teeth in his hand,
14and hath struck [it] into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the hook bringeth up doth the priest take for himself; thus they do to all Israel who are coming in, there, in Shiloh.
15Also before they make perfume with the fat — then hath the priest's servant come in, and said to the man who is sacrificing, ‘Give flesh to roast for the priest, and he doth not take of thee flesh boiled, but raw;’
16and the man saith unto him, ‘Let them surely make a perfume (as to-day) with the fat, then take to thee as thy soul desireth;’ and he hath said to him, ‘Surely now thou dost give; and if not — I have taken by strength.’
17And the sin of the young men is very great [in] the presence of Jehovah, for the men have despised the offering of Jehovah.
18And Samuel is ministering [in] the presence of Jehovah, a youth girt [with] an ephod of linen;
19and a small upper coat doth his mother make to him, and she hath brought it up to him from time to time, in her coming up with her husband to sacrifice the sacrifice of the time.
20And Eli blessed Elkanah, and his wife, and said, ‘Jehovah doth appoint for thee seed of this woman, for the petition which she asked for Jehovah;’ and they have gone to their place.
21When Jehovah hath looked after Hannah, then she conceiveth and beareth three sons and two daughters; and the youth Samuel groweth up with Jehovah.
22And Eli [is] very old, and hath heard all that his sons do to all Israel, and how that they lie with the women who are assembling [at] the opening of the tent of meeting,
23and he saith to them, ‘Why do ye things like these? for I am hearing of your evil words from all the people — these!
24Nay, my sons; for the report which I am hearing is not good causing the people of Jehovah to transgress. —
25If a man sin against a man, then hath God judged him; but if against Jehovah a man sin, who doth pray for him?’ and they hearken not to the voice of their father, though Jehovah hath delighted to put them to death.
26And the youth Samuel is going on and growing up, and [is] good both with Jehovah, and also with men.
27And there cometh a man of God unto Eli, and saith unto him, ‘Thus said Jehovah, Was I really revealed unto the house of thy father in their being in Egypt, before Pharaoh's house,
28even to choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to Me for a priest, to go up on Mine altar, to make a perfume, to bear an ephod before Me, and I give to the house of thy father all the fire-offerings of the sons of Israel?
29Why do ye kick at My sacrifice, and at Mine offering which I commanded [in] My habitation, and dost honour thy sons above Me, to make yourselves fat from the first part of every offering of Israel, of My people?
30‘Therefore — the affirmation of Jehovah, God of Israel — I certainly said, Thy house and the house of thy father, do walk up and down before Me to the age; and now — the affirmation of Jehovah — Far be it from Me! for he who is honouring Me, I honour, and those despising Me, are lightly esteemed.
31‘Lo, days [are] coming, and I have cut off thine arm, and the arm of the house of thy father, that an old man is not in thy house;
32and thou hast beheld an adversary [in My] habitation, in all that He doth good with Israel, and there is not an old man in thy house all the days.
33‘And the man I cut not off of thine from Mine altar, [is] to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thy soul; and all the increase of thy house do die men;
34and this [is] to thee the sign that cometh unto thy two sons, unto Hophni and Phinehas — in one day they die both of them;
35and I have raised up for Me a stedfast priest; as in My heart and in My soul he doth do; and I have built for him a stedfast house, and he hath walked up and down before Mine anointed all the days;
36and it hath been, every one who is left in thy house doth come in to bow himself to him, for a wage of silver, and a cake of bread, and hath said, Admit me, I pray thee, unto one of the priest's offices, to eat a morsel of bread.’

Eli’s Family Judged
12Eli’s sons were wicked men;#1Sm 1:15 they did not respect the Lord#Jr 2:8; 9:3,6 13or the priests’ share of the sacrifices from the people. When anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling 14and plunge it into the container, kettle, cauldron, or cooking pot.#Lv 7:29–34 The priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is the way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. 15Even before the fat was burned,#Lv 3:3–5,16 the priest’s servant would come and say to the one who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won’t accept boiled meat from you — only raw.” 16If that person said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself,”#Lv 7:25 the servant would reply, “No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don’t, I’ll take it by force!” 17So the servants’ sin was very severe in the presence of the Lord, because the men treated the Lord’s offering with contempt.#Mal 2:7–9
18Samuel served in the Lord’s presence#1Sm 2:11; 3:1—this mere boy was dressed in the linen ephod.#1Sm 2:28 19Each year his mother made him a little robe#Ex 28:31 and took it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.#1Sm 1:3,21 20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife:#Lk 2:34 “May the Lord give you children by this woman in place of the one she#2:20 DSS; MT reads he has given to the Lord.”#1Sm 1:11,22,28 Then they would go home.
21The Lord paid attention to Hannah’s need,#Gn 21:1 and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.#1Sm 2:26; 3:19–21; Lk 2:40
22Now Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel#1Sm 2:13–17 and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.#Ex 38:8 23He said to them, “Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. 24No, my sons, the news I hear the Lord’s people spreading is not good. 25If one person sins against another, God can intercede for him, but if a person sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?” #Nm 15:30–31; Heb 10:26–27 But they would not listen to their father, since the Lord intended to kill them.#Ex 5:2; 14:17–18; Jos 11:18–20 26By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.#Lk 2:52
27A man of God came to Eli and said to him,#Dt 33:1; Jdg 13:6 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Didn’t I reveal myself to your forefather’s family#2:27 Lit the house of your father when they were in Egypt and belonged to Pharaoh’s palace?#Ex 4:14–16; 12:1,43 28Out of all the tribes of Israel, I chose your house#2:28 Lit selected him to be my priests, to offer sacrifices on my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence.#Ex 28:1–4 I also gave your forefather’s family all the Israelite food offerings. 29Why, then, do all of you despise my sacrifices and offerings that I require at the place of worship?#Dt 12:5–7 You have honored your sons more than me,#Mt 10:37 by making yourselves fat with the best part of all of the offerings of my people Israel.’
30“Therefore, this is the declaration of the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I did say that your family and your forefather’s family would walk before me forever.#Ex 29:9; 40:12–15; Nm 25:10–13 But now,’ this is the Lord’s declaration, ‘no longer! For those who honor me I will honor,#Ps 50:23 but those who despise me will be disgraced.#1Kg 2:26–27 31Look, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your forefather’s family, so that none in your family will reach old age.#1Sm 4:11–18; 22:17–20 32You will see distress in the place of worship,#1Kg 2:26–27 in spite of all that is good in Israel, and no one in your family will ever again reach old age.#Zch 8:4 33Any man from your family I do not cut off from my altar will bring grief#2:33 Lit grief to your eyes and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently.#2:33 DSS, LXX read die by the sword of men#2:33 Lit die men 34This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas:#1Sm 10:7–9; 1Kg 13:3 both of them will die on the same day.#1Sm 4:11
35“‘Then I will raise up a faithful priest#1Sm 3:20 for myself. He will do whatever is in my heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him,#1Sm 8:3–5; 1Kg 11:38 and he will walk before my anointed one for all time.#1Sm 10:9–10; 12:3; 16:13 36Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.’”
