Deuteronomy 11
11
1 THEREFORE YOU shall love the Lord your God and keep His charge, His statutes, His precepts, and His commandments always.
2 And know this day–for I am not speaking to your children who have not [personally] known and seen it–the instruction and discipline of the Lord your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm;
3 His signs and His deeds which He did in Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land;
4 And what He did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and chariots, how He made the waters of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued you, and how the Lord has destroyed them to this day;
5 And what He did to you in the wilderness until you came to this place;
6 And what He did to Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben, how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up them, their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel. [Num. 26:9, 10.]
7 For your eyes have seen all the great work of the Lord which He did.
8 Therefore you shall keep all the commandments which I command you today, that you may be strong and go in and possess the land which you go across [the Jordan] to possess,
9 And that you may live long in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give to them and to their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.
10 For the land which you go in to possess is not like the land of Egypt, from which you came out, where you sowed your seed and watered it with your foot laboriously as in a garden of vegetables.
11 But the land which you enter to possess is a land of hills and valleys which drinks water of the rain of the heavens,
12 A land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
13 And if you will diligently heed My commandments which I command you this day–to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being–
14 I will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil.
15 And I will give grass in your fields for your cattle, that you may eat and be full.
16 Take heed to yourselves, lest your [minds and] hearts be deceived and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them,
17 And the Lord's anger be kindled against you, and He shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain and the land will not yield its fruit, and you perish quickly off the good land which the Lord gives you.
18 Therefore you shall lay up these My words in your [minds and] hearts and in your [entire] being, and bind them for a sign upon your hands and as forehead bands between your eyes.
19 And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you rise up.
20 And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates,
21 That your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.
22 For if you diligently keep all this commandment which I command you to do, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and to cleave to Him–
23 Then the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than you.
24 Every place upon which the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea [the Mediterranean] your territory shall be.
25 There shall no man be able to stand before you; the Lord your God shall lay the fear and the dread of you upon all the land that you shall tread, as He has said to you.
26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse–
27 The blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you this day;
28 And the curse if you will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you this day to go after other gods, which you have not known.
29 And when the Lord your God has brought you into the land which you go to possess, you shall set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. [Josh. 8:33.]
30 Are they not beyond the Jordan, west of the road, where the sun goes down, in the land of the Canaanites living in the Arabah opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks or terebinths of Moreh?
31 For you are to cross over the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you shall possess it and live in it.
32 And you shall be watchful to do all the statutes and ordinances which I set before you this day.

Deuteronomy 11
11
Recalling the Wonders of the Lord. 1Love the Lord, your God, therefore, and keep his charge, statutes, ordinances, and commandments always.#Gn 26:5; 1 Kgs 2:3. 2Recall today that it was not your children, who have neither known nor seen the discipline of the Lord, your God—his greatness, his strong hand and outstretched arm;#Dt 4:9; 6:20–25. 3the signs and deeds he wrought in the midst of Egypt, on Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and on all his land;#Dt 6:22; 7:18–19; 26:8; 29:1–2; 34:11; Ps 78:42–51. 4what he did to the Egyptian army and to their horses and chariots, engulfing them in the waters of the Red Sea#The Red Sea: Hebrew yam suph, that is, “sea of reeds” or “reedy sea.” as they pursued you,#Ex 14:26–31; 15:1–10; Jos 24:6–7; Ps 78:53; 106:9–11. so that the Lord destroyed them even to this day; 5what he did for you in the wilderness until you came to this place; 6and what he did to the Reubenites Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up out of the midst of Israel, with their families and tents and every living thing that belonged to them—#Nm 16:1–35; Ps 106:16–17. 7but it was you who saw with your own eyes all these great deeds that the Lord has done.
The Gift of Rain. 8#Dt 5:33; 6:1–3. So keep all the commandments I give you today, that you may be strong enough to enter in and take possession of the land that you are crossing over to possess, 9and that you may have long life on the land which the Lord swore to your ancestors he would give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10The land you are to enter and possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you would sow your seed and then water it by hand,#By hand: lit., “by foot,” probably referring to a kind of mechanism for irrigation from the Nile. as in a vegetable garden. 11#Dt 8:7–10. No, the land into which you are crossing to take possession is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks in rain from the heavens, 12a land which the Lord, your God, looks after; the eyes of the Lord, your God, are upon it continually through the year, from beginning to end.
13#Here as elsewhere Moses shifts between speaking of the Lord in the third person and speaking for the Lord in the first person. #Dt 7:12–14; 10:12–13; 28:1–14; Lv 26:3–5; Ps 104:14; Jer 5:24. If, then, you truly listen to my commandments which I give you today, loving and serving the Lord, your God, with your whole heart and your whole being, 14I will give the seasonal rain to your land, the early rain#The early rain: the rains which begin in October or November and continue intermittently throughout the winter. The late rain: the heavy showers of March and April. In Palestine crops are sown in autumn and harvested in spring and summer. and the late rain, that you may have your grain, wine and oil to gather in; 15and I will bring forth grass in your fields for your animals. Thus you may eat and be satisfied. 16#Dt 4:25–27; 6:14–15; 28:15–68. But be careful lest your heart be so lured away that you serve other gods and bow down to them.#Dt 5:6–10; 7:1–6; 13:2–19; 1 Kgs 8:35–36. 17For then the anger of the Lord will flare up against you and he will close up the heavens, so that no rain will fall, and the soil will not yield its crops, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you.
Need for Fidelity. 18#Dt 6:6–9. Therefore, take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them on your arm as a sign, and let them be as a pendant on your forehead. 19Teach them to your children, speaking of them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up, 20and write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates, 21so that, as long as the heavens are above the earth, you and your children may live on in the land which the Lord swore to your ancestors he would give them.
22#Dt 7:1; 9:1–3; 10:12–13. For if you are careful to observe this entire commandment I am giving you, loving the Lord, your God, following his ways exactly, and holding fast to him, 23the Lord will dispossess all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves. 24#Dt 1:7; Ex 23:31; Jos 1:3. Every place where you set foot shall be yours: from the wilderness and the Lebanon, from the Euphrates River to the Western Sea,#The Western Sea: the Mediterranean. shall be your territory. 25None shall stand up against you; the Lord, your God, will spread the fear and dread of you through any land where you set foot, as he promised you.#Dt 2:25; 7:23–24; Ex 23:27.
Blessing and Curse. 26#Dt 28:1–68; 30:1, 15–20; Lv 26:3–45. See, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: 27a blessing for obeying the commandments of the Lord, your God, which I give you today; 28a curse if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord, your God, but turn aside from the way I command you today, to go after other gods, whom you do not know.#Dt 32:16–18. 29When the Lord, your God, brings you into the land which you are to enter and possess, then on Mount Gerizim you shall pronounce the blessing,#Dt 27:12–13; Jos 8:30–35. on Mount Ebal, the curse.#For the full ceremony of blessing and curse, see chaps. 27–28. Gerizim and Ebal are mountains in Samaria, separated by a deep ravine. 30(These are beyond the Jordan, on the other side of the western road in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal beside the oak of Moreh.)#Gn 12:6; 35:4. 31Now you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and possess the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you. When, therefore, you take possession of it and settle there, 32be careful to observe all the statutes and ordinances that I set before you today.
