A Call for God’s Protection
For the choir director: according to “A Silent Dove Far Away.” # Possibly a tune A Davidic Miktam. When the Philistines seized him in Gath. # 1Sm 21:10-11; 22:1
1Be gracious to me, God, for man tramples me;
he fights and oppresses me all day long.
2My adversaries trample me all day,
for many arrogantly fight against me. # Or many fight against me, O exalted One, or many fight against me from the heights # Ps 35:1; 57:3
3When I am afraid,
I will trust in You. # Ps 112:7; Pr 29:25; Is 12:2
4In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not fear.
What can man do to me? # Ps 27:1; 118:6; Heb 13:6
5They twist my words all day long;
all their thoughts against me are evil. # Ps 41:7; 2Pt 3:16
6They stir up strife, # Or They attack they lurk;
they watch my steps
while they wait to take my life. # Ps 10:8-10; 59:3
7Will they escape in spite of such sin?
God, bring down the nations in wrath. # Ezk 17:15; Rm 2:3
8You Yourself have recorded my wanderings. # Or misery
Put my tears in Your bottle.
Are they not in Your records? # 2Kg 20:5; Ps 139:3; Mal 3:16
9Then my enemies will retreat on the day when I call. # Ps 9:3
This I know: God is for me. # Ps 118:6; Rm 8:31
10In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11in God I trust; I will not fear.
What can man do to me? # Ps 112:7; Pr 29:25; Is 12:2
12I am obligated by vows # Lit On me the vows to You, God;
I will make my thank offerings to You. # Ps 50:14
13For You delivered me from death,
even my feet from stumbling,
to walk before God in the light of life. # Jb 33:30; Ps 116:8-9

Psalm 56
For the choir director; according to yonath elem rechokim; #56:0 Unknown musical term. a miktam by David when the Philistines captured him in Gath.
1Have pity on me, O God, because people are harassing me.
All day long warriors oppress me.
2All day long my enemies spy on me.
They harass me.
There are so many fighting against me.
3Even when I am afraid, I still trust you.
4I praise God’s word.
I trust God.
I am not afraid.
What can mere flesh ⌞and blood⌟ do to me?
5All day long my enemies twist my words.
Their every thought is an evil plan against me.
6They attack, and then they hide.
They watch my every step as they wait to take my life.
7With the wrong they do, can they escape?
O God, angrily make the nations fall.
8(You have kept a record of my wanderings.
Put my tears in your bottle.
They are already in your book.)
9Then my enemies will retreat when I call ⌞to you⌟.
This I know: God is on my side.
10I praise God’s word.
I praise the Lord’s word.
11I trust God.
I am not afraid.
What can mortals do to me?
12I am bound by my vows to you, O God.
I will keep my vows by offering songs of thanksgiving to you.
13You have rescued me from death.
You have kept my feet from stumbling
so that I could walk in your presence, in the light of life.
