Laws of Holiness
1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Speak to the entire Israelite community and tell them: Be holy # Ex 19:5-6 because I, Yahweh your God, am holy. # Lv 11:44; 21:8
3“Each of you is to respect his mother and father. # Ex 20:12; 21:15 You are to keep My Sabbaths; I am Yahweh your God. 4Do not turn to idols # Lv 26:1 or make cast images # Nm 33:52 of gods for yourselves; # Ex 20:3,23; 32:31; Dt 4:15-16 I am Yahweh your God.
5“When you offer a fellowship sacrifice to the Lord, sacrifice it so that you may be accepted. 6It is to be eaten on the day you sacrifice it or on the next day, but what remains on the third day must be burned up. # Lv 7:17 7If any is eaten on the third day, it is a repulsive thing; it will not be accepted. # Lv 1:4 8Anyone who eats it will bear his punishment, for he has profaned what is holy to the Lord. That person must be cut off from his people. # Lv 7:18,20
9“When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to reap to the very edge of your field or gather the gleanings # Lv 23:22; Dt 24:19-22; Ru 2:2-7,15-19,23; Is 17:5 of your harvest. 10You must not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor # Dt 15:11 and the foreign resident; # Ex 2:22; Dt 24:20-21; Is 17:5-6; 24:13 I am Yahweh your God.
11“You must not steal. # Ex 20:15; 22:1; Rm 13:9; Eph 4:28 You must not act deceptively # Pr 30:9; Is 30:9; 59:13; Jr 5:12; Hs 4:2; 7:3; 9:2; 10:13; Nah 3:1; Hab 3:17; Zch 13:4 or lie # Gn 21:23; Ex 20:16; 1Sm 15:29; Ps 44:18; 89:34; Is 63:8; Eph 4:25 to one another. 12You must not swear falsely by My name, profaning the name of your God; # Ex 20:7; Lv 18:21; 20:3; Mal 3:5; Jms 5:12 I am Yahweh.
13“You must not oppress # Dt 24:14 your neighbor or rob # Dt 28:29 him. The wages due a hired hand # Ex 12:45; 22:14; Lv 22:10; 25:6,40,50,53; Is 7:20; Jr 46:21; Ezk 18:7; Mal 3:5; Jms 5:4 must not remain with you until morning. 14You must not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, # Ex 4:11; Dt 27:18 but you are to fear your God; # Ps 147:11; Pr 1:7; Ac 10:2; Rv 14:7 I am Yahweh. # Ex 31:13
15“You must not act unjustly # Dt 25:16 when deciding a case. Do not be partial # Ex 23:2-3; Dt 1:17; Jms 2:9 to the poor or give preference to the rich; # Gn 24:35; Jb 34:19 judge your neighbor fairly. 16You must not go about spreading slander # Ps 15:3; Jr 6:28; 9:4; Lk 6:22; 2Co 6:8; 12:20; Eph 4:31; Col 3:8; Ti 3:2; 1Pt 2:1; 4:4; Rv 2:9 among your people; you must not jeopardize # Lit not stand against your neighbor’s life; I am Yahweh.
17“You must not harbor hatred against your brother. # Or your fellow Israelite # 2Th 3:15; 1Jn 2:9,11; 3:15; 4:20 Rebuke your neighbor directly, and you will not incur guilt because of him. # Pr 9:8; 27:5; Ezk 3:18; Mt 18:15; Gl 6:1 18Do not take revenge # Dt 32:35; Pr 20:22; Rm 12:17,19; Heb 10:30; Rv 19:2 or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; # Pr 17:17; Mt 5:43; 22:39; Mk 12:31; Lk 10:27; Rm 13:9; Gl 5:14; Jms 2:8 I am Yahweh.
19“You are to keep My statutes. You must not crossbreed two different kinds of your livestock, sow your fields with two kinds of seed, or put on a garment made of two kinds of material. # Dt 22:9-11
20“If a man has sexual intercourse with a woman who is a slave designated for another man, but she has not been redeemed # Ex 6:6; 21:7-11; Lv 27:29; Dt 22:23-27 or given her freedom, there must be punishment. # Or compensation They are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. 21However, he must bring a ram as his restitution offering to the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. # Ex 27:21 22The priest will make atonement on his behalf before the Lord with the ram of the restitution offering for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven for the sin he committed.
23“When you come into the land and plant any kind of tree for food, you are to consider the fruit forbidden. # Lit uncircumcised It will be forbidden to you for three years; it is not to be eaten. 24In the fourth year all its fruit must be consecrated as a praise offering # Jdg 9:27 to the Lord. 25But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way its yield will increase for you; # Lv 25:18-22 I am Yahweh your God.
26“You are not to eat anything with blood in it. # Or anything over its blood # Gn 9:4; Lv 3:17; 17:10-12; 1Sm 14:32-35; Ezk 33:25 You are not to practice divination # 1Kg 20:33 or sorcery. # Dt 18:10,14; Jdg 9:37; 2Kg 21:6; 2Ch 33:6; Is 2:6; 57:3; Jr 27:9 27You are not to cut off the hair at the sides of your head or mar the edge of your beard. # Lv 21:5; Dt 14:1; 2Sm 10:4-5; Jr 41:5; 48:37; Ezk 5:1-5; 44:20 28You are not to make gashes on your bodies for the dead # 1Kg 18:28; Jr 16:6; 41:5; 47:5; 48:37 or put tattoo marks on yourselves; I am Yahweh.
29“Do not debase # Lit profane # Lv 21:12 your daughter by making her a prostitute, # Ex 34:31; Lv 21:9; Dt 23:17-18 or the land will be prostituted and filled with depravity. 30You must keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary; # Ex 15:17; Lv 20:3; 26:2; Nm 19:20 I am Yahweh.
31“Do not turn to mediums # Or spirits of the dead # Lv 20:6 or consult spiritists, # Or familiar spirits # Dt 18:11; Ac 16:16 or you will be defiled by them; I am Yahweh your God.
32“You are to rise in the presence of the elderly and honor the old. # Jb 12:12; 32:4; Pr 23:22; Lm 5:12; 1Tm 5:1 Fear your God; I am Yahweh.
33“When a foreigner lives with you in your land, you must not oppress # Dt 23:16 him. 34You must regard the foreigner who lives with you as the native-born among you. You are to love him as yourself, # Lv 19:18 for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt; # Ex 23:9; Lv 18:3; Dt 10:19; 23:7 I am Yahweh your God.
35“You must not be unfair # Dt 25:16 in measurements of length, weight, or volume. 36You are to have honest balances, # Hs 12:8; Am 8:5; Mc 6:11 honest weights, an honest dry measure, # Lit honest ephah ; an ephah is a dry measure of grain equivalent to about 23 quarts. and an honest liquid measure; # Lit honest hin ; a hin is a liquid measure of about 1 gallon. # Dt 25:13-16; Pr 16:11; Ezk 45:10 I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 37You must keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them; I am Yahweh.”

Yahweh Is Holy
1Then#Or “And” Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to all the community of the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” and say to them, ‘You#Plural must be holy, because I, Yahweh your#Plural God, am holy. 3Each of you must revere your mother#Hebrew “his mother” and your father,#Hebrew “his father” and you#Plural must keep my Sabbaths; I am Yahweh your#Plural God. 4You#Plural must not turn to idols, and you#Plural must not make for yourselves gods of cast metal; I am Yahweh your#Plural God.
5“ ‘And when you#Plural sacrifice a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to Yahweh, you#Plural must sacrifice it for your#Plural acceptance. 6It must be eaten on the day of your#Plural sacrifice and the next day; but#Or “and” the remainder must be burned up in the fire by the third day. 7And if it is indeed eaten on the third day, it is unclean meat; it shall not be regarded as accepted. 8And the one who eats it shall bear his guilt, because he has profaned Yahweh’s holiness, and that person shall be cut off from his people.
Love Your Neighbor as Yourself
9“ ‘And at your#Plural reaping the harvest of your#Plural land you#Singular must not finish reaping the edge of your#Singular field, and you#Singular must not glean the remnants of your#Singular harvest. 10And you#Singular must not glean your#Singular vineyard, and you#Singular must not gather your#Singular vineyard’s fallen grapes; you#Singular must leave them behind for the needy and for the alien; I am Yahweh your#Plural God.
11“ ‘You#Plural shall not steal, and you#Plural shall not deceive, and you#Plural shall not lie to one another;#Literally “a man to his fellow citizen” 12and you#Plural shall not swear falsely#Literally “to the deception” in my name, and so one of you#Singular profane#Or “you shall profane” the name of your#Singular God; I am Yahweh.
13“ ‘You#Singular shall not exploit your#Singular neighbor, and you#Singular shall not rob him; a hired worker’s wage you#Singular shall not withhold#Literally “leave with you” overnight until morning. 14You#Singular shall not curse the deaf, and you#Singular shall not put a stumbling block before#Literally “to the faces of” a blind person, but#Or “and” you#Singular shall revere your#Singular God; I am Yahweh.
15“ ‘You#Plural shall not do injustice in judgment; you#Singular shall not show partiality to the powerless;#Literally “you shall not lift up the faces of the poor/powerless” you#Singular shall not give preference to the powerful;#Literally “faces of the great” you#Singular shall judge your#Singular fellow citizen with justice. 16You#Singular shall not go about with slander among your#Singular people; you#Singular shall not endanger your#Singular neighbor’s life;#Literally “you shall not stand on the blood of your neighbor” I am Yahweh.
17“ ‘You#Singular shall not hate your#Singular brother in your#Singular heart; you#Singular shall surely rebuke your#Singular fellow citizen, so that you#Singular do not incur sin along with#Or “in addition to him”; literally “upon him” him. 18You#Singular shall not seek vengeance, and you#Singular shall not harbor a grudge against your#Singular fellow citizens;#Literally “the sons of your people” and you#Singular shall love your#Singular neighbor like yourself; #Singular I am Yahweh.
You Shall Keep My Statutes
19“ ‘You#Plural must keep my statutes: as for your#Singular domestic animals, you#Singular shall not cause two differing kinds to breed; as for your#Singular field, you#Singular shall not sow two differing kinds of seed; and, a garment of two differing kinds of woven material should not be worn on you.#Singular
20“ ‘And when a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen and she is a female slave promised to a man, but#Or “and” she indeed has not been ransomed or freedom has not be given to her, there shall be an obligation to compensate; they shall not be put to death, because she has not been freed. 21And he shall bring his guilt offering to Yahweh at the tent of assembly’s entrance: a ram for a guilt offering. 22And the priest shall make atonement for him before#Literally “to the faces of” Yahweh with the ram of the guilt offering for his sin that he committed,#Literally “sinned” and so his sin that he committed#Literally “sinned” shall be forgiven him.
23“ ‘And when you#Plural have come into the land and you#Plural plant any tree for#Hebrew “of” food, you#Plural shall regard its fruit as unharvestable;#Literally “and you shall regard its foreskin as uncircumcised its fruit” for three years it shall be forbidden for you; #Plural it shall not be eaten. 24But#Or “And” in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, offerings of praise for Yahweh. 25And in the fifth year you#Plural shall eat its fruit to increase its yield for you; #Plural I am Yahweh your#Plural God.
26“ ‘You#Plural must not eat anything with the blood; you#Plural shall not practice divination, nor shall you#Plural interpret signs. 27You#Plural shall not round off the corner hair of your#Plural head, and you#Singular shall not trim the corner of your#Singular beard. 28And you#Plural shall not make a slash in your#Plural body for a dead person, nor shall you#Plural make on yourselves a tattoo’s mark; I am Yahweh.
29“ ‘You#Singular shall not profane your#Singular daughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land be prostituted and the land fill up with depravity.#Literally “and the land does not prostitute and the land fills up depravity” or “so that the land does not prostitute and the land fills up depravity” 30You#Plural shall keep my Sabbaths, and you#Plural shall revere my sanctuary; I am Yahweh.
31“ ‘You#Plural shall not turn to the mediums and to the soothsayers; you#Plural shall not seek them to become unclean with them; I am Yahweh your#Plural God.
32“ ‘Before#Literally “from the faces of” old age you#Singular shall get up, and you#Singular shall show respect for an old person; and you#Singular shall revere your God; I am Yahweh.
33“ ‘And when an alien dwells with you#Singular in your#Plural land, you#Plural shall not oppress him. 34The alien who is dwelling with you#Plural shall be like a native among you,#Plural and you#Singular shall love him like yourself, #Singular because you#Plural were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your#Plural God.
35“ ‘You#Plural shall not commit injustice in regulation, in measurement, in weight, or#Or “and” volume. 36You#Plural must have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin; I am Yahweh your#Plural God who brought you#Plural out from the land of Egypt.
37“ ‘Thus you#Plural shall keep all my statutes and all my regulations, and you#Plural shall do them; I am Yahweh.’ ”
