Jude 1
1
Greeting
1Jude, # Mt 13:55; Mk 6:3 a slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James:
To those who are the called, # Rm 1:7; 1Co 1:24 loved # Other mss read sanctified # 1Th 1:4; 2Th 2:13 by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ. # Jn 17:11, 15; 1Th 5:23; 1Pt 1:5
2May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. # 1Pt 1:2; 2Pt 1:2
Jude’s Purpose in Writing
3Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, # Ti 1:4 I found it necessary to write and exhort you to contend for the faith # 1Tm 6:12; 2Tm 4:7 that was delivered # 2Pt 2:21 to the saints once for all. 4For some men, who were designated for this judgment long ago, # 1Pt 2:8 have come in by stealth; # Gl 2:4; 2Tm 3:6 they are ungodly, # Mk 7:22; Rm 5:6 turning the grace of our God into promiscuity and denying # Ti 1:16; 2Pt 2:1; 1Jn 2:22 Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord.
Apostates: Past and Present
5Now I want to remind you, though you know all these things: The Lord # Other mss read Jesus/Joshua, God, or God Christ first # Other mss place first after remind you saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe; # 1Co 10:1-11 6and He has kept, with eternal chains in darkness for the judgment of the great day, the angels # Gn 6:1-4; 2Pt 2:4 who did not keep their own position but deserted their proper dwelling. 7In the same way, Sodom and Gomorrah # 2Pt 2:6 and the cities around them committed sexual immorality and practiced perversions, # Lit and went after other flesh just as angels did, and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire. # 2Th 1:8
8Nevertheless, these dreamers likewise defile their flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme glorious ones. # 2Pt 2:10 9Yet Michael # Dn 10:13,21; 12:1; Rv 12:7 the archangel, # Lk 1:19; 1Th 4:16 when he was disputing with the Devil # Mt 4:1,10; Ac 13:10 in a debate about Moses’ # Ps 77:20; Mt 8:4; Heb 3:2 body, did not dare bring an abusive condemnation against him but said, “The Lord rebuke you! ” 10But these people blaspheme anything they don’t understand. What they know by instinct like unreasoning animals — they destroy themselves with these things. 11Woe to them! For they have traveled in the way of Cain, # Gn 4:1-17,24-25; Heb 11:4; 1Jn 3:12 have abandoned themselves to the error of Balaam # Nm 22:5; 2Pt 2:15 for profit, and have perished in Korah’s rebellion. # Nm 16:1
The Apostates’ Doom
12These are the ones who are like dangerous reefs # Or like spots at your love feasts. # 1Co 11:17-22; 2Pt 2:13 They feast with you, nurturing only themselves without fear. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; # Pr 25:14 trees in late autumn — fruitless, twice dead, pulled out by the roots; 13wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars # Is 14:12-15; Rv 1:16; 8:10; 9:1 for whom the blackness of darkness # Mt 6:23; Jd 6 is reserved forever! # 2Pt 2:17
14And Enoch, # Gn 5:18 in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied about them:
Look! The Lord comes # Or came
with thousands of His holy ones # Dt 33:2; Dn 7:10; Mk 8:38; 1Th 3:13; 2Th 1:7; Heb 12:22
15to execute judgment on all
and to convict them # Lit convict all
of all their ungodly # 2Pt 2:5-6 acts
that they have done in an ungodly way,
and of all the harsh things ungodly sinners
have said against Him.
16These people are discontented grumblers, walking according to their desires; # 2Pt 2:10 their mouths utter arrogant words, flattering # Lv 19:15; Dt 10:17; 2Ch 19:7; Pr 28:21 people for their own advantage.
17But you, dear friends, remember what was predicted by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18they told you, “In the end time # 1Tm 4:1; 2Tm 3:1; 1Pt 1:5,20 there will be scoffers # 2Pt 3:3 walking according to their own ungodly desires.” 19These people create divisions and are unbelievers, # Or natural # Rm 8:9; Php 3:3 not having the Spirit.
Exhortation and Benediction
20But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit, # Rm 8:15-16,26-27; Eph 6:18 21keep yourselves in the love of God, # Jn 15:9-10; 1Jn 4:16 expecting the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life. 22Have mercy on those who doubt; 23save others by snatching them from the fire; # 1Co 3:15; 2Th 1:8 have mercy on others but with fear, # Rv 11:11 hating # Pr 6:16-19 even the garment # Zch 3:3-4 defiled by the flesh.
24Now to Him # Rm 16:25; Eph 3:20 who is able to protect you from stumbling # Jn 17:12 and to make you stand in the presence of His glory, blameless # Eph 1:4; 5:27; Php 2:15; Col 1:22 and with great joy, 25to the only # Jn 5:44; Rm 16:27 God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, # Other mss omit through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time, # Other mss omit before all time now and forever. Amen.

Jude 1
1
1Judas, of Jesus Christ a servant, and brother of James, to those sanctified in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ kept — called,
2kindness to you, and peace, and love, be multiplied!
3Beloved, all diligence using to write to you concerning the common salvation, I had necessity to write to you, exhorting to agonize for the faith once delivered to the saints,
4for there did come in unobserved certain men, long ago having been written beforehand to this judgment, impious, the grace of our God perverting to lasciviousness, and our only Master, God, and Lord — Jesus Christ — denying,
5and to remind you I intend, you knowing once this, that the Lord, a people out of the land of Egypt having saved, again those who did not believe did destroy;
6messengers also, those who did not keep their own principality, but did leave their proper dwelling, to a judgment of a great day, in bonds everlasting, under darkness He hath kept,
7as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, in like manner to these, having given themselves to whoredom, and gone after other flesh, have been set before — an example, of fire age-during, justice suffering.
8In like manner, nevertheless, those dreaming also the flesh indeed do defile, and lordship they put away, and dignities they speak evil of,
9yet Michael, the chief messenger, when, with the devil contending, he was disputing about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring up an evil-speaking judgment, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke thee!’
10and these, as many things indeed as they have not known, they speak evil of; and as many things as naturally (as the irrational beasts) they understand, in these they are corrupted;
11woe to them! because in the way of Cain they did go on, and to the deceit of Balaam for reward they did rush, and in the gainsaying of Korah they did perish.
12These are in your love-feasts craggy rocks; feasting together with you, without fear shepherding themselves; clouds without water, by winds carried about; trees autumnal, without fruit, twice dead, rooted up;
13wild waves of a sea, foaming out their own shames; stars going astray, to whom the gloom of the darkness to the age hath been kept.
14And prophesy also to these did the seventh from Adam — Enoch — saying, ‘Lo, the Lord did come in His saintly myriads,
15to do judgment against all, and to convict all their impious ones, concerning all their works of impiety that they did impiously, and concerning all the stiff things that speak against Him did impious sinners.’
16These are murmurers, repiners; according to their desires walking, and their mouth doth speak great swellings, giving admiration to persons for the sake of profit;
17and ye, beloved, remember ye the sayings spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:
18that they said to you, that in the last time there shall be scoffers, after their own desires of impieties going on,
19these are those setting themselves apart, natural men, the Spirit not having.
20And ye, beloved, on your most holy faith building yourselves up, in the Holy Spirit praying,
21yourselves in the love of God keep ye, waiting for the kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ — to life age-during;
22and to some be kind, judging thoroughly,
23and some in fear save ye, out of the fire snatching, hating even the coat from the flesh spotted.
24And to Him who is able to guard you not stumbling, and to set [you] in the presence of His glory unblemished, in gladness,
25to the only wise God our Saviour, [is] glory and greatness, power and authority, both now and to all the ages! Amen.
