Job 39
39
1Do you know when mountain goats give birth?
Have you watched the deer in labor?
2Can you count the months they are pregnant # Lit months they fulfill
so you can know the time they give birth?
3They crouch down to give birth to their young;
they deliver their newborn. # Or they send away their labor pains
4Their offspring are healthy and grow up in the open field.
They leave and do not return. # Lit return to them
5Who set the wild donkey free?
Who released the swift donkey from its harness?
6I made the wilderness # Jb 24:5; 38:26; Jr 2:24 its home,
and the salty # Dt 29:23; Ps 107:34; Jr 17:6 wasteland its dwelling.
7It scoffs at the noise of the village
and never hears the shouts of a driver. # Ex 3:7; 5:10,13-14; Jb 3:18
8It roams the mountains for its pastureland,
searching for anything green.
9Would the wild ox be willing to serve you?
Would it spend the night by your feeding trough?
10Can you hold the wild ox # Nm 23:22; 24:8; Dt 33:17 to a furrow by its harness?
Will it plow the valleys behind you?
11Can you depend on it because its strength is great?
Would you leave it to do your hard work?
12Can you trust the wild ox to harvest your grain
and bring it to your threshing floor?
13The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
but are her feathers and plumage like the stork’s? # Hb obscure # Ps 104:17; Jr 8:7; Zch 5:9
14She abandons her eggs on the ground
and lets them be warmed in the sand.
15She forgets that a foot may crush them
or that some wild animal may trample them.
16She treats her young harshly, as if they were not her own,
with no fear that her labor may have been in vain.
17For God has deprived her of wisdom;
He has not endowed her with understanding. # Jb 35:11; 38:36
18When she proudly # Hb obscure spreads her wings,
she laughs at the horse and its rider.
19Do you give strength to the horse?
Do you adorn his neck with a mane? # Hb obscure
20Do you make him leap like a locust?
His proud snorting fills one with terror.
21He paws # LXX, Syr; MT reads digs in the valley and rejoices in his strength;
He charges into battle. # Lit He goes out to meet the weapon
22He laughs at fear, since he is afraid of nothing;
he does not run from the sword.
23A quiver rattles at his side,
along with a flashing spear and a lance. # Or scimitar
24He charges ahead # Lit He swallows the ground with trembling rage;
he cannot stand still at the trumpet’s sound.
25When the trumpet blasts, he snorts defiantly. # Lit he says, “Aha!”
He smells the battle from a distance;
he hears the officers’ shouts and the battle cry.
26Does the hawk take flight by your understanding
and spread its wings to the south?
27Does the eagle soar at your command
and make its nest # Jr 49:16; Ob 4; Hab 2:9 on high?
28It lives on a cliff where it spends the night;
its stronghold is on a rocky crag.
29From there it searches for prey; # Jb 9:26; Hab 1:8
its eyes penetrate the distance.
30Its brood gulps down blood,
and where the slain are, it is there. # Ezk 39:17; Mt 24:28; Lk 17:37

Iyoḇ (Job) 39
39
1“Do you know the time when the wild mountain goats bear young? Or do you observe when the deer gives birth?
2Do you number the months they complete? Or do you know the time when they bear young?
3They bow down, they bring forth their young, their labour pains are ended.
4Their young ones are thriving, they grow up in the field. They shall leave and shall not return to them.
5Who set the wild donkey free? Who loosed the bonds of the wild donkey,
6whose home I have made the desert, and the salt land his dwelling?
7He laughs at the commotion of the city; he does not hear the shouts of the driver.
8The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches for all that is green.
9Would the wild ox be pleased to serve you? Or spend the night by your feeding trough?
10If you bind the wild ox in the furrow with ropes, would he plough the valleys behind you?
11Would you rely on his great strength? Or would you leave your labour to him?
12Would you trust him to bring home your grain, and gather it to your threshing-floor?
13The wings of the ostrich flap joyously, but they are not the pinions and plumage of a stork!#Hebrew: Ḥacidah.
14She leaves her eggs on the ground, and warms them in the dust;
15and she forgets that a foot might crush them, or a wild beast tread on them.
16She treats her young harshly, as if not hers; her toil is in vain, without fear,
17because Eloah has made her forget wisdom, and did not endow her with understanding.
18When she lifts herself on high, she laughs at the horse and its rider.
19Have you given the horse strength? Have you covered his neck with a mane?
20Would you make him leap like a locust? His splendid snorting is frightening.
21He paws in the valley, and rejoices in strength. He gallops into the clash of arms.
22He laughs at fear, and is not frightened; nor does he turn back from the sword.
23The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and lance.
24He eats up the ground with fierceness and rage, and he does not stand still because of a voice of a shophar.
25At the blast of the shophar he says, ‘Aha!’ And from afar he smells the battle, the thunder of commanders and shouting.
26Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, spreading its wings toward the south?
27Does the eagle mount up at your mouth, and make its nest on high?
28It dwells on the rock, and lodges on the crag of the rock and the stronghold.
29From there it searches out the prey, its eyes see it from afar.
30And its young ones suck up blood. And where the slain are, there it is!”
