Hananiah’s False Prophecy
1In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, # Jr 27:12 in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur from Gibeon # Jos 9:3 said to me in the temple of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people, 2“This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. # Jr 27:12 3Within two years I will restore to this place all the articles of the Lord’s temple # Jr 27:16 that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took from here and transported to Babylon. 4And I will restore to this place Jeconiah # = Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah # 2Kg 24:10-17 who went to Babylon’ — this is the Lord’s declaration — ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’ ”
Jeremiah’s Response to Hananiah
5The prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the temple of the Lord. 6The prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! # 1Kg 1:36 May the Lord do so. May the Lord make the words you have prophesied come true and may He restore the articles of the Lord’s temple and all the exiles from Babylon to this place! 7Only listen to this message I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, disaster, # Some Hb mss, Vg read famine and plague against many lands and great kingdoms. 9As for the prophet who prophesies peace — only when the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the Lord has truly sent.” # Dt 18:20-22
Hananiah Breaks Jeremiah’s Yoke
10The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke bar from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. # Jr 27:2 11In the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’ ” Jeremiah the prophet then went on his way.
The Lord’s Word against Hananiah
12The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke bar from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet: 13“Go say to Hananiah: This is what the Lord says, ‘You broke a wooden yoke bar, but in its place you will make an iron yoke bar.’ 14For this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says, ‘I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations that they might serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, # Dt 28:48 and they will serve him. # Jr 25:11 I have also put the wild animals under him.’ ” # Jr 27:6
15The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord did not send you, but you have led these people to trust in a lie. # Jr 29:31; Ezk 13:22 16Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to send you off the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have spoken rebellion against the Lord.’ ” # Dt 13:5; Is 59:13; Jr 29:32 17And the prophet Hananiah died that year in the seventh month.

Jeremiah 28
28
1This is what happened in the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, in the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year.
The prophet Hananiah, son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, told me in the Lord's Temple in front of the priests and all the people: 2“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3Before two years have passed I'm going to bring back to Jerusalem all the Temple objects that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed and took to Babylon. 4I will also bring back to Jerusalem Jehoiachin, son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, together with all the exiles from Judah who were taken to Babylon, declares the Lord, because I'm going to break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”
5Then the prophet Jeremiah responded to the prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people who were standing in the Lord's Temple. 6“Amen!” said Jeremiah. “I wish the Lord would do just that! I wish the Lord would fulfill your prophetic words and bring back the Temple objects and all the exiles back to Jerusalem from Babylon.
7But even so, pay attention to this message I'm going to tell you and everyone here. 8The prophets of long ago who came before you and me prophesied war, disaster, and disease against many countries and great kingdoms. 9When it comes to a prophet who prophesies peace, see if their prophecies come true. Only that will prove they are really sent by the Lord.”
10Then the prophet Hananiah removed the yoke from the prophet Jeremiah's neck and broke it. 11Hananiah announced in front of everyone, “This is what the Lord says: Just like this, before two years have passed I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.” Jeremiah the prophet left. 12However, right after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from his neck, a message of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13“Go and tell Hananiah that this is what the Lord says: You may have broken a wooden yoke of wood, but you have replaced it with an iron yoke. 14This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I have tied iron yokes on the necks of all these nations to force them to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even given him control over the wild animals.”
15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen to this, Hananiah! The Lord didn't send you, but you have convinced these people to believe in a lie. 16So this is what the Lord says: I'm going to get rid of you from the earth. You will die this year because you have promoted rebellion against the Lord.”
17The prophet Hananiah died in the seventh month of that very year.
