Jeremiah 11

Reminder of the Covenant
1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2“Listen to the words of this covenant # Dt 29:9 and tell them to the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem. 3You must tell them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let a curse be on the man who does not obey the words of this covenant, # Dt 27:26; Gl 3:10 4which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, # Dt 29:25; Jr 7:22; 34:13 out of the iron furnace.’ # Dt 4:20; 1Kg 8:51 I declared: ‘Obey Me, and do everything that I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God,’ # Dt 29:13; Jr 24:7; 30:22 5in order to establish the oath I swore to your ancestors, # Gn 26:3; Dt 7:8 to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today.”
I answered, “Amen, Lord.” # Dt 27:15-16
6The Lord said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Obey the words of this covenant and carry them out. 7For I strongly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt until today, warning them time and time again, # Lit today, rising early and warning # 2Ch 36:15; Jr 7:13,25; 25:3; 26:5; 29:19; ; 32:33; 35:14,15; 44:4 ‘Obey My voice.’ 8Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. # Jr 3:17; 7:24; 16:12 So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”
9The Lord said to me, “A conspiracy has been discovered among the men of Judah # Ezk 22:25; Hs 6:9 and the residents of Jerusalem. 10They have returned to the sins of their ancestors # Lv 26:39-40; Neh 9:2; Is 65:7 who refused to obey My words and have followed other gods to worship them. # Dt 28:14; Jr 13:10; 35:15 The house of Israel and the house of Judah broke My covenant I made with their ancestors.
11“Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am about to bring on them disaster that they cannot escape. # Jr 39:4-7; Am 9:1-4 They will cry out to Me, but I will not hear them. 12Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods they have been burning incense to, but they certainly will not save them in their time of disaster. # Dt 32:35-37 13Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, Judah, # Jr 2:28 and the altars you have set up to Shame # = Baal # Jr 3:24; Hs 9:10 — altars to burn incense to Baal — as numerous as the streets of Jerusalem.
14“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf, # Jr 7:16; 14:11 for I will not be listening when they call out to Me at the time of their disaster.
15What right does My beloved have
to be in My house, # Jr 7:1-15
having carried out so many evil schemes?
Can holy meat # = sacrificial meat # Hg 2:12 prevent your disaster # LXX; MT reads meat pass from you
so you can rejoice?
16The Lord named you
a flourishing olive tree, # Ps 52:8; 128:3; Hs 14:6
beautiful with well-formed fruit.
He has set fire to it,
and its branches are consumed # Vg; MT reads broken # Ezk 31:12
with a great roaring sound. # Ezk 1:24
17“The Lord of Hosts who planted you # Is 5:2,7; Jr 2:21 has decreed disaster against you, because of the harm the house of Israel and the house of Judah brought on themselves, provoking Me to anger by burning incense to Baal.”
18The Lord informed me, so I knew.
Then You helped me to see their deeds,
19for I was like a docile # Or pet lamb led to slaughter. # Ps 44:11,22; Is 53:7; Jr 12:3
I didn’t know that they had devised plots against me:
“Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit; # Lit bread
let’s cut him off from the land of the living # Ps 27:13; Is 53:8; Ezk 26:20
so that his name will no longer be remembered.”
20But, Lord of Hosts, who judges righteously,
who tests # Jr 9:7; 12:3 heart # Lit kidneys and mind, # Ps 7:9; 17:3; 26:2
let me see Your vengeance on them,
for I have presented my case to You. # Jr 20:12
21Therefore, here is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth # Jr 1:1; 32:7-9 who want to take your life. They warn, “You must not prophesy in the name of Yahweh, # Am 7:13 or you will certainly die at our hand.” 22Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts says: “I am about to punish them. The young men will die by the sword; their sons and daughters will die by famine. # Am 7:16-17 23They will have no remnant, for I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth # Jr 23:12 in the year of their punishment.”

Curse of the Covenant
1The word that came to Jeremiah from Adonai, saying:
2Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
3Now say to them, Thus says Adonai, the God of Israel: “Cursed is the one who does not obey the words of this covenant,
4which I commanded your forefathers in the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt—out of the iron furnace—saying: ‘Listen to My voice, and do all that I command you. Then you will be My people, and I will be your God.
5Then I will fulfill the oath which I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today.’” In response I said, “Amen, Adonai.”
6Then Adonai said to me: “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: ‘Hear the words of this covenant, and do them.’
7For I earnestly forewarned your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt until this day, forewarning early and often, saying ‘Listen to My voice!’
8Yet they would not obey or incline their ear, but each one walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant—which I commanded them to do, but they did not.”
9Then Adonai said to me, “A conspiracy has been discovered among the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
10They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers who refused to hear My words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. “The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers.”
11Therefore thus says Adonai. “I will soon bring a disaster on them that they will not be able to escape. They will cry out to Me, yet I will not listen to them.
12Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense—but they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
13For as numerous as your cities are your gods, O Judah, and as numerous as the streets of Jerusalem are the altars you have set up to the shameful thing—altars to burn incense to Baal.
14As for you, you are not to pray for this people or lift up supplication or prayer for them, for I will not hear them at the time they cry out to Me because of their disaster.”
Olive Tree with Broken Branches
15“What is My beloved doing in My House as she does evil schemes with many? Can holy meat prevent your disaster? So you may rejoice?
16Adonai called your name— a leafy olive tree, beautiful with well-formed fruit. With the noise of a great tumult He has set it on fire, and its branches are broken.
17For Adonai-Tzva’ot, who planted you, has pronounced evil against you because of the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done to themselves, provoking Me by offering sacrifices to Baal.
18Moreover, Adonai gave me knowledge of it, and I knew it, then You showed me their deeds.
19But I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter. I did not know they had devised plots against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit. Let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will be no more remembered.”
20But Adonai-Tzva’ot, who judges righteously, who tests the mind and the heart, let me see your vengeance on them. For to You I have made my cause known.
21Therefore thus says Adonai concerning the men of Anathoth who seek your life, saying, “You must not prophesy in the Name of Adonai, so you would not die by our hand.”
22Therefore thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot: “I am about to punish them! The young men will die by the sword; their sons and their daughters will die by famine.
23No remnant will be left to them, for I will bring calamity on the men of Anathoth—the year of their visitation.
