How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem like nothing to you? # Lit Is it not in your eyes? # 1Kg 5:13-16; 6:38; 1Ch 29:1-8; Ezr 3:10-13; Zch 4:10 4Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel” — this is the Lord’s declaration. # Jos 1:6-9; 1Ch 28:10,20 “Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. From Deprivation to Blessing
10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet: 11“This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Ask the priests for a ruling. # Mal 2:7 12If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy? ” # Jr 11:15
The priests answered, “No.”
13Then Haggai asked, “If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled? ” # Lv 11:39; 22:4-6; Nm 19:11-13,22
The priests answered, “It becomes defiled.”
14Then Haggai replied, “So is this people, and so is this nation before Me” — this is the Lord’s declaration. “And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled.
15“Now, reflect back from this day: Before one stone was placed on another in the Lord’s temple, 16what state were you in? # Hb obscure When someone came to a grain heap of 20 measures, it only amounted to 10; when one came to the winepress to dip 50 measures from the vat, it only amounted to 20. 17I struck you — all the work of your hands — with blight, mildew, # Dt 28:22; 1Kg 8:37; Am 4:9 and hail, # Ps 105:32-33 but you didn’t turn to Me” — this is the Lord’s declaration. 18“Consider carefully # Hg 1:5,7 from this day forward; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid; consider it carefully. 19Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you.” # Zch 8:9-13
Promise to Zerubbabel
20The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. # Hg 2:6-7; Ezk 38:19-20 22I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms. # Gn 19:25; Am 4:11 I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother’s sword. 23On that day” — this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts — “I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “and make you like My signet ring, # Est 8:8; Jr 22:23-25 for I have chosen you.” # Mt 1:12-13 This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.

The Glory of the New Temple
1In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the Lord by the prophet Hag´gai, saying, 2Speak now to Zerub´babel the son of She-al´ti-el, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jos´edech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, 3#Ezra 3.12. Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? 4Yet now be strong, O Zerub´babel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jos´edech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts: 5#Exod 33.14. According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my Spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. 6#Heb 12.26. For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7and I will shake all nations, and the Desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. 9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.
The People's Unfaithfulness Reproved
10In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Dari´us, came the word of the Lord by Hag´gai the prophet, saying, 11Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying, 12If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. 13#Num 19.11-22. Then said Hag´gai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. 14Then answered Hag´gai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the Lord; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean. 15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord: 16since those days were, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressvat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. 17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labors of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the Lord. 18Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the Lord's temple was laid, consider it. 19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.
The Lord's Promise to Zerubbabel
20And again the word of the Lord came unto Hag´gai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying, 21Speak to Zerub´babel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; 22and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. 23In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerub´babel, my servant, the son of She-al´ti-el, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.
