1But when the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo # Ezr 6:14; Hg 1:1; Zch 1:1 prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them, 2Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak # Ezr 3:2,8,10 began to rebuild God’s house in Jerusalem. The prophets of God # Ezr 6:14 were with them, helping them.
3At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates River, Shethar-bozenai, and their colleagues # Ezr 6:6,13 came to the Jews and asked, “Who gave you the order to rebuild this temple and finish this structure? ” # Or finish its furnishings # Ezr 1:1-4; 5:9,13; 6:3 4They also asked them, “What are the names of the workers # One Aram ms, LXX, Syr; MT reads Then we told them exactly what the names of the men were who are constructing this building? ” 5But God was watching # Lit But the eye of their God was over # Ezr 7:6,9,28; 8:18,22,31 the Jewish elders. These men wouldn’t stop them until a report was sent to Darius, so that they could receive written instructions about this matter.
The Letter to Darius
6This is the text of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates River, Shethar-bozenai, and their colleagues, the officials in the region, sent to King Darius. 7They sent him a report, written as follows:
To King Darius:
All greetings.
8Let it be known to the king that we went to the house of the great God in the province of Judah. It is being built with cut # Or huge stones, and its beams are being set in the walls. This work is being done diligently and succeeding through the people’s efforts. # Ezr 6:3-4 9So we questioned the elders and asked, “Who gave you the order to rebuild this temple and finish this structure? ” # Or finish its furnishings 10We also asked them for their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
11This is the reply they gave us:
We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished. # 1Kg 6:1,37-38 12But since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He handed them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon. # 2Ch 36:19-20 13However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, he issued a decree to rebuild the house of God. # 2Ch 36:22-23; Ezr 1:1-4 14He also took from the temple in Babylon the gold and silver articles of God’s house that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and carried them to the temple in Babylon. # 2Ch 36:7,10,18; Ezr 1:7; Dn 5:2-3 He released them from the temple in Babylon to a man named Sheshbazzar, the governor by the appointment of King Cyrus. # Ezr 1:8,11 15Cyrus told him, “Take these articles, put them in the temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its original site.” # Ezr 6:5 16Then this same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of God’s house in Jerusalem. # Ezr 3:10 It has been under construction from that time until now, # Ezr 5:1-5 yet it has not been completed.
17So if it pleases the king, let a search of the royal archives # Lit treasure house in Babylon be conducted to see if it is true that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. # 2Ch 36:22-23; Ezr 1:1-4 Let the king’s decision regarding this matter be sent to us. # Ezr 6:1-12

Ezra 5

The Work Resumed
1Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them. 2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them. 3At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall? 4Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building? 5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
6The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king: 7they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace. 8Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands. 9Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls? 10We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them. 11And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up. 12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God. 14And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15and said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place. 16Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished. 17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
