Deuteronomy 11

Remember and Obey
1“Therefore, love the Lord your God and always keep His mandate and His statutes, ordinances, and commands. 2You must understand today that it is not your children who experienced or saw the discipline of the Lord your God:
His greatness, strong hand, and outstretched arm; # 1Kg 8:42; 2Ch 6:32 3His signs and the works He did in Egypt to Pharaoh king of Egypt and all his land; # Ex 7–12 4what He did to Egypt’s army, its horses and chariots, when He made the waters of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued you, and He destroyed them # Ex 14 completely; # Lit to this day 5what He did to you in the wilderness until you reached this place; 6and what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when in the middle of the whole Israelite camp the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and every living thing with them. # Nm 16
7Your own eyes have seen # Dt 3:21; 4:3; 29:2-3; Jos 24:7 every great work the Lord has done.
8“Keep every command I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to cross into and possess the land you are to inherit, 9and so that you may live long # Dt 4:40; 5:16; 25:15 in the land the Lord swore to your fathers to give them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. # Ex 3:17; Lv 20:24; Nm 13:27; Dt 6:3; 26:9,15; 27:3; 31:20; Jos 5:6; Jr 11:5; Ezk 20:6 10For the land you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated by hand # Lit foot as in a vegetable garden. 11But the land you are entering to possess is a land of mountains and valleys, watered by rain from the sky. 12It is a land the Lord your God cares for. He is always watching over it # Is 27:3 from the beginning to the end of the year.
13“If you carefully obey my commands I am giving you today, to love the Lord your God and worship Him with all your heart and all your soul, 14I # DSS, Sam, LXX read He will provide rain for your land in the proper time, the autumn and spring rains, # Following the Hb calendar, the early rain came in September/October and the late rain in March/April. # Jr 5:24; Jms 5:7 and you will harvest your grain, new wine, and oil. # Dt 7:13; 14:23; 18:4; 2Ch 32:28; Neh 10:39; 13:5,12; Hs 2:22; Jl 2:19,24 15I # DSS, Sam, LXX read He will provide grass in your fields for your livestock. You will eat and be satisfied. # Lv 25:19; Dt 6:11; 8:10; 31:20 16Be careful # Ex 34:12; Dt 4:23; 6:12; 8:11; 12:13,19,30; 15:9 that you are not enticed to turn aside, worship, and bow down to other gods. # Dt 17:3; 29:26; 30:17; Jos 23:16; Jdg 2:17; 2Ch 7:19,22 17Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you. # Ex 22:24; Dt 7:4; 31:17; Jos 23:16 He will close the sky, and there will be no rain; # 1Kg 8:35; 2Ch 2:6; 6:26; 7:13 the land will not yield its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land # Dt 8:7 the Lord is giving you.
18“Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol # Or phylactery ; Mt 23:5 on your foreheads. # Lit symbol between your eyes ; Ex 13:16; Dt 6:8 19Teach them to your children, # Dt 4:9-10 talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, # Dt 6:6-9 21so that as long as the heavens are above the earth, your days and those of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your fathers. # Dt 1:35 22For if you carefully observe every one of these commands I am giving you to follow — to love the Lord your God, walk in all His ways, and remain faithful # Lit and hold on to Him — 23the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you will drive out nations greater and stronger than you are. # Dt 4:38; 9:1 24Every place the sole of your foot treads will be yours. # Jos 1:3-5 Your territory will extend from the wilderness to Lebanon and from the Euphrates River # Some Hb mss, LXX, Tg, Vg read the great river, the river Euphrates to the Mediterranean Sea. # Gn 15:18-20; Ex 23:31 25No one will be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put fear and dread of you in all the land where you set foot, as He has promised you. # Dt 2:25
A Blessing and a Curse
26“Look, today I set before you a blessing and a curse: # Dt 30:15; Jr 21:8 27there will be a blessing, if you obey the commands of the Lord your God I am giving you today, 28and a curse, if you do not obey the commands of the Lord your God and you turn aside from the path I command you today by following other gods you have not known. 29When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim the blessing at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount Ebal. 30Aren’t these mountains across the Jordan, beyond the western road in the land of the Canaanites, who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the oaks # Sam, LXX, Syr, Aq, Sym read oak ; Gn 12:6 of Moreh? 31For you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you possess it and settle in it, 32be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances I set before you today.

Deuteronomy 11
11
1Love the Lord your God, and do what he wants you to do. Always obey his laws, rules, and commands. 2Remember today the discipline you learned from the Lord your God. (⌞I’m not talking⌟ to your children. They didn’t see or experience any of this.) You saw and experienced his great power—his mighty hand and powerful arm. 3You saw the miraculous signs and deeds he did in Egypt to Pharaoh (the king of Egypt) and to his whole country. 4You saw what he did to the Egyptian army, its horses and chariots. He drowned them in the Red Sea when they pursued you. So the Lord destroyed them forever. 5You saw what he did for you in the desert until you came here. 6You also saw what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, from the tribe of Reuben. In the middle of all the Israelites the ground opened up and swallowed them, their families, their tents, and every living creature with them. 7You saw with your own eyes all these spectacular things that the Lord did.
8Obey all the commands I’m giving you today. Then you will have the strength to enter and take possession of the land once you’ve crossed ⌞the Jordan River⌟. 9Then you will also live for a long time in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors and their descendants—a land flowing with milk and honey.
10The land you’re about to enter and take possession of isn’t like the land you left in Egypt. There you used to plant your seed, and you had to water it like a vegetable garden. 11The land you’re about to enter is a land with hills and valleys, watered by rain from the sky. 12It is a land the Lord your God cares about. He watches over it all year long.
13If you faithfully obey the commands that I’m giving you today, love the Lord your God, and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14I will send rain on your land at the right time, both in the fall and in the spring. Then you will gather your own grain, new wine, and olive oil. 15I will provide grass in the fields for your animals, and you will be able to eat all you want.
16Be careful, or you’ll be tempted to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17The Lord will become angry with you. He’ll shut the sky so that there’ll be no rain. Then the ground won’t grow any crops, and you’ll quickly disappear from this good land the Lord is giving you.
18Take these words of mine to heart and keep them in mind. ⌞Write them down,⌟ tie them around your wrist, and wear them as headbands as a reminder. 19Teach them to your children, and talk about them when you’re at home or away, when you lie down or get up. 20Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 21Then you and your children will live for a long time in this land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors—as long as there’s a sky above the earth.
22Faithfully obey all these commands I’m giving you. Love the Lord your God, follow all his directions, and be loyal to him. 23Then the Lord will force all these people out of your way. Then you will take possession of ⌞the land belonging to⌟ people taller and stronger than you. 24I will give you every place on which you set foot. Your borders will be from the desert to Lebanon, from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea. 25No one will be able to stop you. As the Lord your God promised, he will make people terrified of you wherever you go in this land.
Choose the Blessing or the Curse
26Today I’m giving you the choice of a blessing or a curse. 27You’ll be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I’m giving you today. 28You’ll be cursed if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God, if you turn from the way I’m commanding you to live today, and if you worship other gods you never knew. 29When the Lord your God brings you into the land you’re about to enter, recite the blessing from Mount Gerizim and the curse from Mount Ebal. 30(These mountains are on the west side of the Jordan, beyond the road that goes west, in the region of the Canaanites who live on the plains facing Gilgal, next to the oak trees of Moreh.) 31You’re about to cross the Jordan River to enter and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you take possession of it and live there, 32be careful to obey all the laws and rules I’m giving you today.
