Daniel’s Prayer
1In the first year of Darius, # Dn 5:31; 6:1; 11:1 the son of Ahasuerus, a Mede by birth, who was ruler over the kingdom of the Chaldeans: 2In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be 70. # 2Ch 36:21; Ezr 1:1; Jr 25:11-12; 29:10; Zch 7:5 3So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. # Neh 1:4; Jb 2:8; Is 61:3; Lk 10:13
4I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:
Ah, Lord — the great and awe-inspiring God # Dt 7:21; Neh 9:32 who keeps His gracious covenant # Dt 7:9 with those who love Him # 1Jn 4:20 and keep His commands # Dt 7:9; Neh 1:5 — 5we have sinned, # 1Kg 8:48; Neh 9:33; Ps 106:6; Is 64:5-7; Jr 14:7 done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled, # Lm 1:18,20 and turned away from Your commands and ordinances. # Ps 119:176; Is 53:6; Dn 9:11 6We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, # 2Ch 36:16; Jr 44:4-5 who spoke in Your name to our kings, leaders, fathers, and all the people of the land.
7Lord, righteousness belongs to You, # Jr 23:6; 33:16; Dn 9:18 but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel — those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where You have dispersed them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward You. 8Lord, public shame # Ps 37:1-2 belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. # Ps 78:56-64 9Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against Him 10and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by following His instructions that He set before us through His servants # 2Kg 17:13-15; 18:12 the prophets.
11All Israel has broken Your law and turned away, # Is 1:3-4; Jr 8:5-10 refusing to obey You. The promised curse # Lit The curse and the oath written in the law of Moses, # Dt 28:15-68; 29:16–30:20; Lk 2:22 the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against Him. 12He has carried out His words # Is 44:26; Jr 44:2-6; Lm 2:17; Zch 1:6 that He spoke against us and against our rulers # Lit against rulers who ruled us # Jb 12:17; Ps 82:2-7; 148:11 by bringing on us so great a disaster that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done # Lm 1:12; 2:13; Ezk 5:9 under all of heaven. 13Just as it is written in the law of Moses, # Lv 26:14-45; Dt 28:15-68; Dn 9:11 all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not appeased # Jb 36:13; Is 9:13; Jr 2:30; 5:3; Mal 1:9 the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to Your truth. # Jr 31:18 14So the Lord kept the disaster in mind and brought it on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all He has done. But we have not obeyed Him.
15Now, Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand # Dt 5:15 and made Your name renowned # Neh 9:10; Jr 32:20 as it is this day, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, may Your anger and wrath # Jr 32:31-32 turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; # Ps 87:1-3; Dn 9:20; Jl 3:17; Zch 8:3 for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.
17Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of Your servant. Show Your favor # Nm 6:25; Ps 31:17; 67:2 to Your desolate sanctuary # Lm 5:18 for the Lord’s sake. 18Listen, # Lit Stretch out Your ear my God, and hear. Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city called by Your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before You based on our righteous acts, but based on Your abundant compassion. 19Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for Your own sake, do not delay, # Ps 44:23; 74:10-11 because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.
The 70 Weeks of Years
20While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, # Ps 145:18; Is 58:9; Dn 9:3; 10:12 and presenting my petition before Yahweh my God concerning the holy mountain of my God — 21while I was praying, Gabriel, # Dn 8:16; Lk 1:19,26 the man I had seen in the first vision, # Dn 8:1,15 came to me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering. # Ex 29:39; 1Kg 18:36; Ezr 9:4 22He gave me this explanation: “Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding. # Dn 8:16; 10:21; Zch 1:9 23At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God. # Dn 10:11,19 So consider the message and understand the vision: # Mt 24:15
24Seventy weeks # = 490 years are decreed # Lv 25:8; Nm 14:34; Ezk 4:5-6
about your people and your holy city —
to bring the rebellion to an end,
to put a stop to sin,
to wipe away iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness, # Is 51:6,8; 56:1; Jr 23:5-6; Rm 3:21-22
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most holy place.
25Know and understand this:
From the issuing of the decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem # Ezr 4:24; 6:1-15; Neh 2:1-8; 3:1
until Messiah # Mt 1:17; Jn 1:41; 4:25 the Prince # Or until an anointed one, a prince
will be seven weeks and 62 weeks. # = 49 years and 434 years
It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat,
but in difficult times.
26After those 62 weeks # = 434 years
the Messiah will be cut off # Is 53:8; Mk 9:12; Lk 24:26
and will have nothing.
The people of the coming prince
will destroy the city # Mt 24:2; Mk 13:2; Lk 19:43-44 and the sanctuary.
The # Lit Its, or His end will come with a flood, # Nah 1:8
and until the end there will be # Or end of a war;
desolations are decreed.
27He will make a firm covenant # Or will enforce a covenant
with many for one week, # = 7 years
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.
And the abomination of desolation # Dn 11:31; Mt 24:15; Mk 13:14; Lk 21:20
will be on a wing # Is 7:7-8; Mt 4:5 of the temple # LXX; MT reads of abominations # Or And the desolator will be on the wing of abominations, or And the desolator will come on the wings of monsters (or of horror); Hb obscure
until the decreed destruction # Is 10:23; 28:22
is poured out on the desolator.”

Daniel’s Prayer for His People
1 # ch. 11:1 In the first year of #See ch. 5:31 Darius the son of Ahasuerus, by descent a #[ch. 8:20] Mede, who was made king over the realm of the #ch. 5:30Chaldeans— 2in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to #[Ezra 1:1; Jer. 25:12]the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.
3Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by #ver. 17, 18, 23; [Neh. 1:4]prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 4I prayed to the Lord my God and #ver. 20; [Ezra 10:1; Neh. 1:6] made confession, saying, #Neh. 1:5; 9:32 “O Lord, the #Neh. 1:5; 9:32 great and awesome God, who #Deut. 7:9keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5#ver. 15 we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly #Lam. 3:42and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. 6#2 Chr. 36:15, 16 We have not listened to #Ezra 9:11; Zech. 1:6 your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to #Ezra 9:7; Neh. 9:34our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7To you, #[ver. 14; Lam. 1:18] O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, #[Esth. 9:20] those who are near and #[Esth. 9:20] those who are far away, in #See Jer. 8:3 all the lands to which you have driven them, because of #Lev. 26:40the treachery that they have committed against you. 8To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because #[See ver. 5 above]we have sinned against you. 9#Neh. 9:17; Ps. 86:15To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10#[See ver. 6 above] and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by #[See ver. 6 above]his servants the prophets. 11#See Isa. 1:4-6 All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, #[Jer. 40:3; 44:23] refusing to obey your voice. #Jer. 44:22 And the curse and oath #See Lev. 26:14-45; Deut. 28:15-68 that are written in the Law of #1 Chr. 6:49; 2 Chr. 24:9; Neh. 10:29 Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because #[See ver. 5 above]we have sinned against him. 12He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against #[Ps. 82:2, 3] our rulers who ruled us,#9:12 Or our judges who judged us by #Jer. 39:16 bringing upon us a great calamity. #Ezek. 5:9; [Lam. 1:12]For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. 13#[See ver. 11 above] As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, #Hos. 7:10turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. 14#[Jer. 1:12] Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, #Neh. 9:33; See ver. 7 for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and #ver. 10we have not obeyed his voice. 15And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt #Ex. 32:11; [Ex. 6:1; Neh. 1:10] with a mighty hand, and #Ex. 14:18; Neh. 9:10 have made a name for yourself, as at this day, #See ver. 5we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
16“O Lord, #Ps. 31:1; 71:2 according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, #ver. 20; ch. 11:45; Jer. 31:23; Zech. 8:3 your holy hill, #Lam. 1:5 because for our sins, and for #[Ex. 20:5] the iniquities of our fathers, #Lam. 2:15, 16 Jerusalem and your people have become #Ps. 44:13; 79:4; Ezek. 36:4; Mic. 6:16a byword among all who are around us. 17Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord,#9:17 Hebrew for the Lord’s sake #Num. 6:25 make your face to shine upon #Lam. 5:18your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18#2 Kgs. 19:16; Isa. 37:17 O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see #ver. 26; See ver. 27 our desolations, and #Jer. 25:29the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. #Ps. 40:17; 70:5 Delay not, #Ps. 25:11; 79:9 for your own sake, O my God, because #[See ver. 18 above] your city and #Jer. 14:9your people are called by your name.”

Isa. 65:24 While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for #See ver. 16the holy hill of my God, 21while I was speaking in prayer, the man #See ch. 8:16 Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, #See ch. 8:18 came to me in swift flight at #Ex. 29:39; [1 Kgs. 18:36; Ezra 9:4, 5]the time of the evening sacrifice. 22#[ch. 8:16] He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you #[ch. 1:4, 17]insight and understanding. 23#[ver. 20] At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, #[ch. 10:12, 14] and I have come to tell it to you, for #ch. 10:11, 19 you are greatly loved.
