Daniel 11

1In the first year of Darius the Mede, # Dn 5:31; 9:1 I stood up to strengthen and protect him. 2Now I will tell you the truth. # Dn 8:26; 10:1,21
Prophecies about Persia and Greece
“Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece. # Dn 8:21; 10:20 3Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants. # Dn 5:19; 8:4; 11:16,36 4But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven, # Jr 49:36; Ezk 37:9; Dn 7:2; 8:8; Zch 2:6; 6:5; Rv 7:1 but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them. # Jr 12:15,17; 18:7
Kings of the South and the North
5“The king of the South # Dn 11:9,11,14,25,40 will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his. 6After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North # Dn 11:13,15,40 to seal the agreement. She will not retain power, and his strength will not endure. She will be given up, together with her entourage, her father, # Some Hb mss, Theod read the child ; Syr, Vg read her children and the one who supported her during those times. 7In the place of the king of the South, one from her family # Lit from the shoot of her roots will rise up, come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the North. He will take action against them and triumph. 8He will take even their gods captive to Egypt, with their metal images and their precious articles of silver and gold. # Is 37:19; 46:1-2; Jr 43:12-13 For some years he will stay away from the king of the North, 9who will enter the kingdom of the king of the South and then return to his own land.
10“His sons will mobilize for war and assemble a large number of armed forces. They will advance, sweeping through like a flood, # Lit advance and overflow and pass through # Is 8:8; Jr 46:7,8; 51:42; Dn 11:26,40 and will again wage war as far as his fortress. 11Infuriated, the king of the South will march out to fight with the king of the North who will raise a large army but they will be handed over to his enemy. 12When the army is carried off, he will become arrogant and cause tens of thousands to fall, but he will not triumph. 13The king of the North will again raise a multitude larger than the first. After some years # Lit At the end of the times # Dn 4:16; 12:7 he will advance with a great army and many supplies.
14“In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will assert themselves to fulfill a vision, but they will fail. 15Then the king of the North will come, build up an assault ramp, # Jr 6:6; Ezk 4:2; 17:17 and capture a well-fortified city. The forces of the South will not stand; even their select troops will not be able to resist. 16The king of the North who comes against him will do whatever he wants, # Dn 5:19; 11:3,36 and no one can oppose him. He will establish himself in the beautiful land # = Israel # Dn 8:9; 11:41 with total destruction in his hand. 17He will resolve # 2Kg 12:17; Ezk 4:3,7 to come with the force of his whole kingdom and will reach an agreement with him. # = the king of the South He will give him a daughter in marriage # Lit him the daughter of women to destroy it, # Perhaps the kingdom but she will not stand with him or support him. 18Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands # of the Mediterranean # Gn 10:5; Is 66:19; Jr 2:10; 31:10; Zph 2:11 and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him. # Hs 12:14 19He will turn his attention back to the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble, fall, # Ps 27:2; Jr 46:6 and be no more. # Jb 20:8; Ps 37:36; Ezk 26:21
20“In his place one will arise who will send out a tax collector # 2Kg 23:35 for the glory of the kingdom; but within a few days he will be shattered, though not in anger # Or not openly or in battle.
21“In his place a despised # Is 53:3 person will arise; royal honors will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peace # Or come without warning # Dn 8:25; 11:24 and seize the kingdom by intrigue. 22A flood of forces will be swept away before him; they will be shattered, as well as the covenant prince. 23After an alliance is made with him, he will act deceitfully. He will rise to power with a small nation. # Or a few people 24During a time of peace, # Or Without warning he will come into the richest parts of the province # Nm 13:20; Neh 9:25; Ezk 34:14 and do what his fathers and predecessors never did. He will lavish plunder, loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will make plans against fortified cities, but only for a time.
25“With a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will prepare for battle with an extremely large and powerful army, but he will not succeed, because plots will be made against him. 26Those who eat his provisions # Dn 1:5,8,13,15 will destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain. 27The two kings, whose hearts are bent on evil, will speak lies # Ps 12:2; Jr 9:3-5; 41:1-3 at the same table but to no avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time. # Dn 8:19; 11:35,40; Hab 2:3 28The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant; # Or the Jewish people and religion he will take action, then return to his own land.
29“At the appointed time he will come again to the South, but this time # Lit but the last will not be like the first. 30Ships of Kittim # = the Romans # Gn 10:4; Nm 24:24; 1Ch 1:7; Is 23:1,12; Jr 2:10 will come against him, and being intimidated, he will withdraw. Then he will rage against the holy covenant and take action. On his return, he will favor those who abandon the holy covenant. 31His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress. They will abolish the daily sacrifice # Dn 8:11-13; 12:11 and set up the abomination of desolation. # Dn 9:27; 12:11; Mt 24:15; Mk 13:14 32With flattery he will corrupt those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be strong and take action. # Mc 5:7-9; Zch 9:13-16; 10:3-6 33Those who are wise among the people # Mal 2:7 will give understanding to many, yet they will die by sword and flame, # Mt 24:9; Jn 16:2; Heb 11:36-38 and be captured and plundered for a time. 34When defeated, they will be helped by some, but many others will join them insincerely. # Dn 11:21,32; Mt 7:15; Ac 20:29,30; Rm 16:18 35Some of the wise will fall so that they may be refined, # Dt 8:16; Pr 17:3; Dn 12:10; Zch 13:9; Mal 3:2-3 purified, and cleansed # Dn 12:10 until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
36“Then the king will do whatever he wants. # Dn 5:19; 11:3,16 He will exalt and magnify himself above every god, # Is 14:13; Dn 5:20; 8:11,25; 2Th 2:4 and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods. # Rv 13:5-6 He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, # Is 10:25; 26:20; Dn 8:19 because what has been decreed will be accomplished. 37He will not show regard for the gods # Or God of his fathers, the god longed for by women, or for any other god, # 1Co 8:5-6 because he will magnify himself above all. 38Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses — a god his fathers did not know — with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches. 39He will deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. He will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, # Or those he acknowledges making them rulers over many and distributing land as a reward.
40“At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm against him # Is 5:28; Jr 4:13 with chariots, horsemen, and many ships. He will invade countries and sweep through them like a flood. # Dn 11:10,26; Zch 9:14 41He will also invade the beautiful land, # Is 11:14; Dn 8:9; 11:16 and many will fall. But these will escape from his power: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people # Lit the first of the Ammonites. # Jr 48:47; 49:6 42He will extend his power against the countries, and not even the land of Egypt will escape. 43He will get control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt. The Libyans and Cushites will also be in submission. # Lit Cushites at his steps # 2Ch 12:3; Ezk 30:4; Nah 3:9 44But reports from the east # Rv 16:12 and the north will terrify him, and he will go out with great fury to annihilate and completely destroy many. 45He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and # Or the seas at the beautiful holy mountain, # Is 11:9; 27:13; 65:25; 66:20; Dn 9:16,20 but he will meet his end with no one to help him.

Daniel 11
11
1“As for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.
2“Now I will show you the truth. Behold, three more kings will stand up in Persia. The fourth will be far richer than all of them. When he has grown strong through his riches, he will stir up all against the realm of Greece. 3A mighty king will stand up, who will rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. 4When he stands up, his kingdom will be broken and will be divided towards the four winds of the sky, but not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion with which he ruled; for his kingdom will be plucked up, even for others besides these.
5“The king of the south will be strong. One of his princes will become stronger than him, and have dominion. His dominion will be a great dominion. 6At the end of years they will join themselves together; and the daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make an agreement, but she will not retain the strength of her arm. He will also not stand, nor will his arm; but she will be given up, with those who brought her, and he who became the father of her, and he who strengthened her in those times.
7“But out of a shoot from her roots one will stand up in his place, who will come to the army and will enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and will deal against them and will prevail. 8He will also carry their gods with their molten images, and with their goodly vessels of silver and of gold, captive into Egypt. He will refrain some years from the king of the north. 9He will come into the realm of the king of the south, but he will return into his own land. 10His sons will wage war, and will assemble a multitude of great forces which will come on, and overflow, and pass through. They will return and wage war, even to his fortress.
11“The king of the south will be moved with anger and will come out and fight with him, even with the king of the north. He will send out a great multitude, and the multitude will be given into his hand. 12The multitude will be carried off, and his heart will be exalted. He will cast down tens of thousands, but he won’t prevail. 13The king of the north will return, and will send out a multitude greater than the former. He will come on at the end of the times, even of years, with a great army and with abundant supplies.
14“In those times many will stand up against the king of the south. Also the children of the violent amongst your people will lift themselves up to establish the vision, but they will fall. 15So the king of the north will come and cast up a mound, and take a well-fortified city. The forces of the south won’t stand, neither will his select troops, neither will there be any strength to stand. 16But he who comes against him will do according to his own will, and no one will stand before him. He will stand in the glorious land, and destruction will be in his hand. 17He will set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and with him equitable conditions. He will perform them. He will give him the daughter of women, to destroy the kingdom, but she will not stand, and won’t be for him. 18After this he will turn his face to the islands, and will take many, but a prince will cause the reproach offered by him to cease. Yes, moreover, he will cause his reproach to turn on him. 19Then he will turn his face towards the fortresses of his own land; but he will stumble and fall, and won’t be found.
20“Then one who will cause a tax collector to pass through the kingdom to maintain its glory will stand up in his place; but within few days he shall be destroyed, not in anger, and not in battle.
21“In his place a contemptible person will stand up, to whom they had not given the honour of the kingdom; but he will come in time of security, and will obtain the kingdom by flatteries. 22The overwhelming forces will be overwhelmed from before him, and will be broken. Yes, also the prince of the covenant. 23After the treaty made with him he will work deceitfully; for he will come up and will become strong with few people. 24In time of security he will come even on the fattest places of the province. He will do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers. He will scatter amongst them prey, plunder, and wealth. Yes, he will devise his plans against the strongholds, but only for a time.
25“He will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south will wage war in battle with an exceedingly great and mighty army, but he won’t stand; for they will devise plans against him. 26Yes, those who eat of his delicacies will destroy him, and his army will be swept away. Many will fall down slain. 27As for both these kings, their hearts will be to do evil, and they will speak lies at one table; but it won’t prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. 28Then he will return into his land with great wealth. His heart will be against the holy covenant. He will take action, and return to his own land.
29“He will return at the appointed time and come into the south; but it won’t be in the latter time as it was in the former. 30For ships of Kittim will come against him. Therefore he will be grieved, and will return, and have indignation against the holy covenant, and will take action. He will even return, and have regard to those who forsake the holy covenant.
31“Forces from him will profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and will take away the continual burnt offering. Then they will set up the abomination that makes desolate. 32He will corrupt those who do wickedly against the covenant by flatteries; but the people who know their God will be strong and take action.
33“Those who are wise amongst the people will instruct many; yet they will fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder, many days. 34Now when they fall, they will be helped with a little help; but many will join themselves to them with flatteries. 35Some of those who are wise will fall—to refine them, and to purify, and to make them white, even to the time of the end, because it is yet for the time appointed.
36“The king will do according to his will. He will exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and will speak marvellous things against the God of gods. He will prosper until the indignation is accomplished, for that which is determined will be done. 37He won’t regard the gods of his fathers, or the desire of women, or regard any god; for he will magnify himself above all. 38But in their place, he will honour the god of fortresses. He will honour a god whom his fathers didn’t know with gold, silver, and with precious stones and pleasant things. 39He will deal with the strongest fortresses by the help of a foreign god. He will increase with glory whoever acknowledges him. He will cause them to rule over many, and will divide the land for a price.
40“At the time of the end the king of the south will contend with him; and the king of the north will come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, with horsemen, and with many ships. He will enter into the countries, and will overflow and pass through. 41He will enter also into the glorious land, and many countries will be overthrown; but these will be delivered out of his hand: Edom, Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. 42He will also stretch out his hand on the countries. The land of Egypt won’t escape. 43But he will have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt. The Libyans and the Ethiopians will follow his steps. 44But news out of the east and out of the north will trouble him; and he will go out with great fury to destroy and utterly to sweep away many. 45He will plant the tents of his palace between the sea and the glorious holy mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.
