Daniel 11

1In the first year of Darius the Mede, # Dn 5:31; 9:1 I stood up to strengthen and protect him. 2Now I will tell you the truth. # Dn 8:26; 10:1,21
Prophecies about Persia and Greece
“Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece. # Dn 8:21; 10:20 3Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants. # Dn 5:19; 8:4; 11:16,36 4But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven, # Jr 49:36; Ezk 37:9; Dn 7:2; 8:8; Zch 2:6; 6:5; Rv 7:1 but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them. # Jr 12:15,17; 18:7
Kings of the South and the North
5“The king of the South # Dn 11:9,11,14,25,40 will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his. 6After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North # Dn 11:13,15,40 to seal the agreement. She will not retain power, and his strength will not endure. She will be given up, together with her entourage, her father, # Some Hb mss, Theod read the child ; Syr, Vg read her children and the one who supported her during those times. 7In the place of the king of the South, one from her family # Lit from the shoot of her roots will rise up, come against the army, and enter the fortress of the king of the North. He will take action against them and triumph. 8He will take even their gods captive to Egypt, with their metal images and their precious articles of silver and gold. # Is 37:19; 46:1-2; Jr 43:12-13 For some years he will stay away from the king of the North, 9who will enter the kingdom of the king of the South and then return to his own land.
10“His sons will mobilize for war and assemble a large number of armed forces. They will advance, sweeping through like a flood, # Lit advance and overflow and pass through # Is 8:8; Jr 46:7,8; 51:42; Dn 11:26,40 and will again wage war as far as his fortress. 11Infuriated, the king of the South will march out to fight with the king of the North who will raise a large army but they will be handed over to his enemy. 12When the army is carried off, he will become arrogant and cause tens of thousands to fall, but he will not triumph. 13The king of the North will again raise a multitude larger than the first. After some years # Lit At the end of the times # Dn 4:16; 12:7 he will advance with a great army and many supplies.
14“In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will assert themselves to fulfill a vision, but they will fail. 15Then the king of the North will come, build up an assault ramp, # Jr 6:6; Ezk 4:2; 17:17 and capture a well-fortified city. The forces of the South will not stand; even their select troops will not be able to resist. 16The king of the North who comes against him will do whatever he wants, # Dn 5:19; 11:3,36 and no one can oppose him. He will establish himself in the beautiful land # = Israel # Dn 8:9; 11:41 with total destruction in his hand. 17He will resolve # 2Kg 12:17; Ezk 4:3,7 to come with the force of his whole kingdom and will reach an agreement with him. # = the king of the South He will give him a daughter in marriage # Lit him the daughter of women to destroy it, # Perhaps the kingdom but she will not stand with him or support him. 18Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands # of the Mediterranean # Gn 10:5; Is 66:19; Jr 2:10; 31:10; Zph 2:11 and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him. # Hs 12:14 19He will turn his attention back to the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble, fall, # Ps 27:2; Jr 46:6 and be no more. # Jb 20:8; Ps 37:36; Ezk 26:21
20“In his place one will arise who will send out a tax collector # 2Kg 23:35 for the glory of the kingdom; but within a few days he will be shattered, though not in anger # Or not openly or in battle.
21“In his place a despised # Is 53:3 person will arise; royal honors will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peace # Or come without warning # Dn 8:25; 11:24 and seize the kingdom by intrigue. 22A flood of forces will be swept away before him; they will be shattered, as well as the covenant prince. 23After an alliance is made with him, he will act deceitfully. He will rise to power with a small nation. # Or a few people 24During a time of peace, # Or Without warning he will come into the richest parts of the province # Nm 13:20; Neh 9:25; Ezk 34:14 and do what his fathers and predecessors never did. He will lavish plunder, loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will make plans against fortified cities, but only for a time.
25“With a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will prepare for battle with an extremely large and powerful army, but he will not succeed, because plots will be made against him. 26Those who eat his provisions # Dn 1:5,8,13,15 will destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain. 27The two kings, whose hearts are bent on evil, will speak lies # Ps 12:2; Jr 9:3-5; 41:1-3 at the same table but to no avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time. # Dn 8:19; 11:35,40; Hab 2:3 28The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant; # Or the Jewish people and religion he will take action, then return to his own land.
29“At the appointed time he will come again to the South, but this time # Lit but the last will not be like the first. 30Ships of Kittim # = the Romans # Gn 10:4; Nm 24:24; 1Ch 1:7; Is 23:1,12; Jr 2:10 will come against him, and being intimidated, he will withdraw. Then he will rage against the holy covenant and take action. On his return, he will favor those who abandon the holy covenant. 31His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress. They will abolish the daily sacrifice # Dn 8:11-13; 12:11 and set up the abomination of desolation. # Dn 9:27; 12:11; Mt 24:15; Mk 13:14 32With flattery he will corrupt those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be strong and take action. # Mc 5:7-9; Zch 9:13-16; 10:3-6 33Those who are wise among the people # Mal 2:7 will give understanding to many, yet they will die by sword and flame, # Mt 24:9; Jn 16:2; Heb 11:36-38 and be captured and plundered for a time. 34When defeated, they will be helped by some, but many others will join them insincerely. # Dn 11:21,32; Mt 7:15; Ac 20:29,30; Rm 16:18 35Some of the wise will fall so that they may be refined, # Dt 8:16; Pr 17:3; Dn 12:10; Zch 13:9; Mal 3:2-3 purified, and cleansed # Dn 12:10 until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
36“Then the king will do whatever he wants. # Dn 5:19; 11:3,16 He will exalt and magnify himself above every god, # Is 14:13; Dn 5:20; 8:11,25; 2Th 2:4 and he will say outrageous things against the God of gods. # Rv 13:5-6 He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, # Is 10:25; 26:20; Dn 8:19 because what has been decreed will be accomplished. 37He will not show regard for the gods # Or God of his fathers, the god longed for by women, or for any other god, # 1Co 8:5-6 because he will magnify himself above all. 38Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses — a god his fathers did not know — with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches. 39He will deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. He will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, # Or those he acknowledges making them rulers over many and distributing land as a reward.
40“At the time of the end, the king of the South will engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm against him # Is 5:28; Jr 4:13 with chariots, horsemen, and many ships. He will invade countries and sweep through them like a flood. # Dn 11:10,26; Zch 9:14 41He will also invade the beautiful land, # Is 11:14; Dn 8:9; 11:16 and many will fall. But these will escape from his power: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people # Lit the first of the Ammonites. # Jr 48:47; 49:6 42He will extend his power against the countries, and not even the land of Egypt will escape. 43He will get control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt. The Libyans and Cushites will also be in submission. # Lit Cushites at his steps # 2Ch 12:3; Ezk 30:4; Nah 3:9 44But reports from the east # Rv 16:12 and the north will terrify him, and he will go out with great fury to annihilate and completely destroy many. 45He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and # Or the seas at the beautiful holy mountain, # Is 11:9; 27:13; 65:25; 66:20; Dn 9:16,20 but he will meet his end with no one to help him.

Daniel 11
11
1I stepped forward to help him and keep him safe. It was the first year that Darius, the Mede, was king.
The Kings of Egypt and Syria
2“Now then, what I’m about to tell you is true. Three more kings will come to power in Persia. Then a fourth one will rule. He will be much richer than all the others. He will use his wealth to gain power. And he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece. 3After him, a mighty king will come to power. He will rule with great power and do as he pleases. 4Not long after his rule ends, his kingdom will be broken up. It will be divided up into four parts. His children will not receive it when he dies. And it will not be as strong as his kingdom. It will be pulled up by the roots. And it will be given to others.
5“The king of Egypt will become strong. But one of his commanders will become even stronger. He will rule over his own kingdom with great power. 6After many years, the two kingdoms will join forces. The daughter of the next king of Egypt will go to the king of Syria. She will join forces with him. But she will not hold on to her power. And he and his power will not last either. In those days she and her attendants will die. They will die when the people she trusts lie to her. The same thing will happen to her father and the one who helped her.
7“Someone from her family line will take her place. He will attack the army of the next king of Syria. Then he will enter his fort. He will fight against that army and win. 8He will take the metal statues of their gods. He will also take away their priceless objects of silver and gold. He will carry everything off to Egypt. For many years he will leave the king of Syria alone. 9Then the king of Syria will march into territory that was controlled by Egypt. After that, he will return to his own country. 10His sons will prepare for war. They will gather a huge army. It will sweep along like a mighty flood. The army will fight its way as far as one of the Egyptian forts.
11“Another king of Egypt will march out with mighty force. He will be very angry. By then, another person will have become king in Syria. The king of Egypt will come to fight against him. The king of Syria will gather a huge army. But that army will lose the battle. 12His soldiers will be carried off. Then the king of Egypt will be filled with pride. He will kill many thousands of soldiers. But his success will not last. 13The king of Syria will bring another army together. It will be larger than the first one. After several years, he will march out with a huge army. It will have everything it needs for battle.
14“In those times many people will rise up against the next king of Egypt. Lawless people in your own nation will refuse to obey him. That is what you saw in your vision. But they will not succeed. 15Then the king of Syria will go to a certain city that has high walls around it. He will build ramps against them. And he will capture that city. The forces of Egypt will not have the power to stop him. Even their best troops will not be strong enough to stand up against him. 16He will do anything he wants to. No one will be able to stand up against him. He will take over the beautiful land of Israel. And he will have the power to destroy it. 17The king of Syria will decide to come with the might of his entire kingdom. He will join forces with the king of Egypt. And the king of Syria will give his daughter to him to become his wife. The king of Syria will do this in order to take control of Egypt. But his plans will not succeed or help him. 18Then he will turn his attention to the lands along the Mediterranean coast. He will take over many of them. But a commander will put an end to his proud actions. He will turn his pride back on him. 19After this, the king of Syria will return to the forts in his own country. But he will trip and fall. And he will never be seen again.
20“The next king after him will send someone out to collect taxes. The taxes will help maintain the glory of his kingdom. But in a few years the king will be destroyed. It will not happen because someone becomes angry with him or kills him in battle.
21“After him, another king will take his place. Many people will hate him. He will not be honored as a king should be. He will lead an army into the kingdom when its people feel secure. He will make clever plans to capture it. 22Then he will sweep away a huge army. The army and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed. 23The king of Syria will make an agreement with that prince. But then the king of Syria will not keep his word. He will rise to even greater power with the help of only a few people. 24When the people in the richest areas feel secure, he will attack them. He will do what the kings before him could not do. And he will reward his followers with the goods and wealth he takes. He will make clever plans to take over the forts. But that will last for only a short time.
25“He will become stronger and more confident. He will do that by gathering a large army. Then he will go to war against the next king of Egypt. That king will fight against him with a huge and very powerful army. But the king of Egypt will not be able to stand up against him. So the plans of the king of Syria will succeed. 26The trusted advisers of the king of Egypt will try to destroy him. His army will be swept away. Many of his soldiers will be wounded or killed. 27The kings of Syria and Egypt will sit at the same table. But in their hearts they will plan to do what is evil. And they will tell lies to each other. But it will not do them any good. God will put an end to their plans at his appointed time. 28The king of Syria will return to his own country. He will go back there with great wealth. But he will make evil plans against the holy temple in Jerusalem. He will do a lot of harm to the temple and the people who worship there. Then he will return to his own country.
29“At God’s appointed time, the king of Syria will march south again. But this time things will turn out differently. 30Roman ships will oppose him. He will lose hope. Then he will turn back. He will take out his anger against the holy temple. And he will do good to the Jews who desert it.
31“His army will come and make the temple area ‘unclean.’ They will put a stop to the daily sacrifices. Then they will set up a hated thing that destroys. 32He will pretend to praise those who have broken the covenant. He will lead them to do what is evil. But the people who know their God will firmly oppose him.
33“Those who are wise will teach many others. But for a while, some of the wise will be killed by swords. Others will be burned to death. Still others will be made prisoners. Or they will be robbed of everything they have. 34When that happens, they will receive a little help. Many who are not honest will join them. 35So some of the wise people will suffer. They will be made pure in the fire. They will be made spotless until the time of the end. It will still come at God’s appointed time.
The King Who Honors Himself
36“A certain king will do as he pleases. He will honor himself. He will put himself above every god. He will say things against the greatest God of all. Those things have never been heard before. He will have success until God is not angry anymore. What God has decided to do must take place. 37The king will not show any respect for the gods his people have always worshiped. There is a god desired by women. He will not respect that god either. He will not have respect for any god. Instead, he will put himself above all of them. 38In place of them, he will worship a god of war. He will honor a god his people have not known before. He will give gold and silver to that god. He will bring jewels and expensive gifts to it. 39He will attack the strongest forts. A new god will help him do it. He will greatly honor those who recognize him as their leader. He will make them rulers over many people. And he will give them land as a reward.
40“A king in the south will go to war against him. It will happen at the time of the end. The king who will honor himself will rush out against him. He will come with chariots and horsemen. He will attack with a lot of ships. He will lead his army into many countries. He will sweep through them like a flood. 41He will also march into the beautiful land of Israel. Many countries will fall. But Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be saved from his mighty hand. 42His power will reach out into many countries. Even Egypt will not escape. 43He will gain control of all Egypt’s riches. He will take their gold and silver treasures. The people of Libya and Cush will be under his control. 44But reports from the east and the north will terrify him. He will march out with great anger to destroy many people and wipe them out. 45He will set up his royal tents. He will put them between the Mediterranean Sea and the beautiful holy mountain of Zion. But his end will come. And no one will help him.
