Warnings on the Journey to Jerusalem
1After # Ac 16:10-11 we tore ourselves away from them and set sail, we came by a direct route to Cos, the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. 2Finding a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we boarded and set sail. 3After we sighted Cyprus, leaving it on the left, we sailed on to Syria and arrived at Tyre, because the ship was to unload its cargo there. 4So we found some disciples and stayed there seven days. Through the Spirit they told Paul not to go to Jerusalem. # Ac 11:26; 20:23; 21:11 5When our days there were over, we left to continue our journey, while all of them, with their wives and children, escorted us out of the city. After kneeling down on the beach to pray, 6we said good-bye to one another. Then we boarded the ship, and they returned home.
7When we completed our voyage from Tyre, we reached Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and stayed with them one day. # Jn 21:23; Ac 12:20 8The next day we left and came to Caesarea, where we entered the house of Philip # Ac 6:5; 8:5 the evangelist, # Eph 4:11; 2Tm 4:5 who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him. 9This man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. # Lk 2:36; Ac 2:7; 13:1; 1Co 11:5
10While we were staying there many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own feet and hands, and said, “This is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into Gentile hands.’ ” # 1Kg 22:11; Jr 13:1-11; Mt 20:19; Ac 20:23; 21:33 12When we heard this, both we and the local people begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.
13Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” # Ac 5:41; 9:16; 20:24
14Since he would not be persuaded, we stopped talking and simply said, “The Lord’s will be done! ” # Mt 6:10; Lk 22:42
Conflict over the Gentile Mission
15After these days we got ready and went up to Jerusalem. 16Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us and brought us to Mnason, a Cypriot and an early disciple, with whom we were to stay. # Ac 8:40; 21:3-4
17When we reached Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us gladly. # Ac 15:4; 21:7 18The following day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present. # Ac 11:30; 12:17; 15:13 19After greeting them, he related in detail what God did among the Gentiles through his ministry. # Ac 1:17; 14:27; Rm 15:18-19
20When they heard it, they glorified God and said, “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who have believed, and they are all zealous # Ac 22:3; Rm 10:12; Gl 1:14 for the law. 21But they have been told about you that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, by telling them not to circumcise their children or to walk in our customs. # Ac 6:14; 15:19-20; 21:28; 1Co 7:18 22So what is to be done? # Other mss add A multitude has to come together, since They will certainly hear that you’ve come. 23Therefore do what we tell you: We have four men who have obligated themselves with a vow. 24Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay for them to get their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that what they were told about you amounts to nothing, but that you yourself are also careful about observing the law. # Jn 11:55; Ac 18:18; 21:26; 24:18 25With regard to the Gentiles who have believed, we have written a letter containing our decision that # Other mss add they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what is strangled, and from sexual immorality.”
The Riot in the Temple Complex
26Then the next day, Paul took the men, having purified himself along with them, and entered the temple, announcing the completion of the purification days when the offering for each of them would be made. # Nm 6:13; Ac 24:18 27As the seven days were about to end, the Jews from Asia saw him in the temple complex, stirred up the whole crowd, and seized him, # Ac 24:18; 26:21 28shouting, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people, our law, and this place. What’s more, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has profaned this holy place.” # Mt 24:15; Ac 24:6 29For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple complex. # The inner temple court for Jewish men # Ac 18:19; 20:4
30The whole city was stirred up, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul, dragged him out of the temple complex, and at once the gates were shut. # 2Kg 11:15; Ac 16:19; 26:21 31As they were trying to kill him, word went up to the commander of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in chaos. 32Taking along soldiers and centurions, he immediately ran down to them. Seeing the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33Then the commander came up, took him into custody, and ordered him to be bound with two chains. # Ac 12:6; 20:23; 21:11; Eph 6:20; 2Tm 1:16; 2:9 He asked who he was and what he had done. 34Some in the mob were shouting one thing and some another. Since he was not able to get reliable information because of the uproar, he ordered him to be taken into the barracks. # Ac 19:32; 23:10 35When Paul got to the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the mob’s violence, 36for the mass of people followed, yelling, “Take him away! ” # Lk 23:18; Jn 19:15; Ac 22:22
Paul’s Defense before the Jerusalem Mob
37As he was about to be brought into the barracks, Paul said to the commander, “Am I allowed to say something to you? ”
He replied, “Do you know Greek? 38Aren’t you the Egyptian who raised a rebellion some time ago and led 4,000 Assassins # Lit 4,000 men of the Assassins # In Lat, the word Sicarii is similar to the Eng word “cut-throats.” into the wilderness? ” # Mt 24:26; Ac 5:36
39Paul said, “I am a Jewish man from Tarsus of Cilicia, # Ac 9:11; 22:3 a citizen of an important city. # Lit of no insignificant city Now I ask you, let me speak to the people.”
40After he had given permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people. When there was a great hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew language: # Jn 5:2; Ac 12:17

Acts 21
21
Paul in Tyre
1When we finally left them, we sailed straight to the island of Cos. The next day we sailed to the island of Rhodes and from there to the city of Patara. 2In Patara, we found a ship that was going to Phoenicia, so we went aboard and sailed away. 3We could see the island of Cyprus as we passed it on our left and sailed to Syria. We landed at the city of Tyre, where the ship was to unload its cargo.
4In Tyre we searched for the disciples. After we found them, we stayed there for seven days. The Spirit had the disciples tell Paul not to go to Jerusalem. 5When our time was up, we started on our way. All of them with their wives and children accompanied us out of the city. We knelt on the beach, prayed, 6and said goodbye to each other. Then we went aboard the ship, and the disciples went back home.
Paul in Caesarea
7Our sea travel ended when we sailed from Tyre to the city of Ptolemais. We greeted the believers in Ptolemais and spent the day with them. 8The next day we went to Philip’s home in Caesarea and stayed with him. He was a missionary and one of the seven men who helped the apostles. 9Philip had four unmarried daughters who had the ability to speak what God had revealed.
10After we had been there for a number of days, a prophet named Agabus arrived from Judea. 11During his visit he took Paul’s belt and tied his own feet and hands with it. Then he said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘This is how the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man who owns this belt. Then they will hand him over to people who are not Jewish.’ ”
12When we heard this, we and the believers who lived there begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem.
13Then Paul replied, “Why are you crying like this and breaking my heart? I’m ready not only to be tied up in Jerusalem but also to die there for the sake of the Lord, the one named Jesus.”
14When Paul could not be persuaded, we dropped the issue and said, “May the Lord’s will be done.”
Paul in Jerusalem
15After that, we got ready to go to Jerusalem. 16Some of the disciples from Caesarea went with us. They took us to Mnason’s home, where we would be staying. Mnason was from the island of Cyprus and was one of the first disciples. 17When we arrived in Jerusalem, the believers welcomed us warmly.
18The next day Paul went with us to visit James. All the spiritual leaders #21:18 Or “pastors,” or “elders.” were present. 19After greeting them, Paul related everything God had done through his work with non-Jewish people.
20When the spiritual leaders heard about everything, they praised God. They said to Paul, “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews are now believers, and all of them are deeply committed to Moses’ Teachings. 21But they have been told that you teach all the Jews living among non-Jewish people to abandon Moses. They claim that you tell them not to circumcise their children or follow Jewish customs. 22What should we do about this? They will certainly hear that you’re in town. 23So follow our advice. We have four men who have made a vow to God. 24Take these men, go through the purification ceremony with them, and pay the expenses to shave their heads. Then everyone will know that what they’ve been told about you isn’t true. Instead, they’ll see that you carefully follow Moses’ Teachings.
25 ⌞To clarify this matter⌟ we have written non-Jewish believers a letter with our decision. We told them that they should not eat food sacrificed to false gods, bloody meat, or the meat of strangled animals. They also should not commit sexual sins.”
26The next day, Paul took the men and went through the purification ceremony with them. Then he went into the temple courtyard to announce the time when the purification would be over and the sacrifice would be offered for each of them.
27When the seven days were almost over, the Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in the temple courtyard. They stirred up the whole crowd and grabbed Paul. 28Then they began shouting, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere to turn against the Jewish people, Moses’ Teachings, and this temple. He has even brought Greeks into the temple courtyard and has made this holy place unclean.” #21:28 “Unclean” refers to anything that Moses’ Teachings say is not presentable to God. 29They had seen Trophimus from Ephesus with him in the city earlier and thought Paul had taken him into the temple courtyard.
30The whole city was in chaos, and a mob formed. The mob grabbed Paul and dragged him out of the temple courtyard. The courtyard doors were immediately shut.
31As the people were trying to kill Paul, the officer in charge of the Roman soldiers received a report that all Jerusalem was rioting. 32Immediately, he took some soldiers and officers and charged the crowd. When the crowd saw the officer and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33Then the officer went to Paul, grabbed him, and ordered him to be tied up with two chains.
The officer asked who Paul was and what he had done. 34Some of the crowd shouted one thing, while others shouted something else. The officer couldn’t get any facts because of the noise and confusion, so he ordered Paul to be taken into the barracks. 35When Paul came to the stairs of the barracks, the crowd was so violent that the soldiers had to carry him. 36The mob was behind them shouting, “Kill him!”
Paul Speaks in His Own Defense
37As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the officer, “May I say something to you?”
The officer replied to Paul, “Can you speak Greek? 38Aren’t you the Egyptian who started a revolution not long ago and led four thousand terrorists into the desert?”
39Paul answered, “I’m a Jew, a citizen from the well-known city of Tarsus in Cilicia. I’m asking you to let me talk to the people.”
40The officer gave Paul permission to speak. So Paul stood on the stairs of the barracks and motioned with his hand for the people to be quiet. When the mob was silent, Paul spoke to them in the Hebrew language.
