Judah’s King Jehoram
5Jehoram # 2Kg 8:17-22 was 32 years old when he became king and reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 6He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, # 1Kg 12:28-30 for Ahab’s daughter was his wife. # 2Ch 18:1 He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, 7but because of the covenant the Lord had made with David, He was unwilling to destroy the house of David since the Lord had promised # 2Sm 7:12-17; 1Kg 11:13 to give a lamp # 1Kg 11:36; 15:4 to David and to his sons forever.

Then at night he set out to attack the Edomites who had surrounded him and the chariot commanders. 10And now Edom is still in rebellion against Judah’s domination today. Libnah also rebelled at that time against his domination because he had abandoned Yahweh, the God of his ancestors. 11Jehoram also built high places # 1Kg 11:7 in the hills # Some Hb mss, LXX, Vg read cities of Judah, and he caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves, # Lv 20:5 and he led Judah astray.

12Then a letter came to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet, saying:
This is what Yahweh, the God of your ancestor David says: “Because you have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat # 2Ch 17:3-4 or in the ways of Asa king of Judah # 2Ch 14:2-5 13but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, # 2Ch 21:6 have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves like the house of Ahab # 1Kg 16:31-33 prostituted itself, and also have killed your brothers, # 2Ch 21:4 your father’s family, who were better than you, 14Yahweh is now about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a horrible affliction. 15You yourself will be struck with many illnesses, including a disease of the intestines, until your intestines come out day after day because of the disease.” # 2Ch 21:18-19
Jehoram’s Last Days
16The Lord put it into the mind of the Philistines and the Arabs # 2Ch 17:11; 22:1 who live near the Cushites to attack Jehoram. # 2Ch 33:11 17So they went to war against Judah and invaded it. They carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace and also his sons and wives; not a son was left to him except Jehoahaz, # LXX, Syr, Tg read Ahaziah # 2Ch 25:23 his youngest son.
18After all these things, the Lord afflicted him in his intestines with an incurable disease. 19This continued day after day until two full years passed. Then his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died from severe # Lit evil illnesses. But his people did not hold a fire in his honor like the fire in honor of his fathers. # 2Ch 16:14
20Jehoram # 2Kg 8:17,24 was 32 years old when he became king; he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. He died to no one’s regret # Lit He walked in no desirability # Jr 22:18,28 and was buried in the city of David but not in the tombs of the kings. # 2Ch 24:25

2 Chronicles 21
1¶ Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram, his son, reigned in his stead.
2And he had brethren, sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Israel.
3And their father had given them great gifts of silver and of gold and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.
4Now Jehoram rose up against the kingdom of his father, and he strengthened himself and slew all his brethren with the sword and likewise some of the princes of Israel.
5Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
6And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab, for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife; and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.
7However, the Lord would not destroy the house of David because of the covenant that he had made with David and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
8In his days Edom rebelled from under the dominion of Judah and made themselves a king.
9Then Jehoram went forth with his princes and all his chariots with him, and he rose up by night and smote Edom who had compassed him in and all the captains of the chariots.
10With all this Edom remained in rebellion, out from under the hand of Judah unto this day. Libnah also rebelled at the same time to not be under his hand because he had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers.
11Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication and compelled Judah unto this.
12¶ And a writing came to him from Elijah, the prophet, that said this: Thus hath the Lord, the God of David, thy father, said, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father nor in the ways of Asa, king of Judah,
13but hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fornicate, like unto the fornication of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, who were better than thyself,
14behold, the Lord shall smite thy people with a great plague, and thy sons and thy wives and all thy goods;
15and thou shalt have great sickness, with disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.
16Then the Lord stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians;
17and they came up against Judah and invaded the land and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also and his wives so that none of his sons remained except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
18And after all this the Lord smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease.
19And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness; so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like they had done for his fathers.
20He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years and departed without being desired. And they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.
