Israel’s Sons
1These # Gn 35:22-26; 46:8-25 were Israel’s sons:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi,
Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin,
Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Judah’s Descendants
3Judah’s # Gn 38:6-30 sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. # Gn 38:2-5; 46:12; Nm 26:19-22 These three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanite woman. Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the Lord’s sight, so He put him to death. 4Judah’s daughter-in-law Tamar bore Perez and Zerah to him. Judah had five sons in all.
5Perez’s sons: Hezron and Hamul.
6Zerah’s sons: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara # Some Hb mss, LXX, Syr, Tg, Vg read Darda ; 1Kg 4:31 # 1Kg 4:31 — five in all.
7Carmi’s son: Achar, # = Trouble; Achan in Jos 7:1,16-26 # Jos 7:1,16-26 who brought trouble on Israel when he was unfaithful by taking the things set apart for destruction.
8Ethan’s son: Azariah.
9Hezron’s sons, who were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai. # = Caleb
10Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, a leader of Judah’s descendants.
11Nahshon fathered Salma, and Salma fathered Boaz.
12Boaz fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse.
13Jesse fathered Eliab, his firstborn; Abinadab was born second, Shimea third, 14Nethanel fourth, Raddai fifth, 15Ozem sixth, and David seventh. 16Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah’s three sons: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17Amasa’s mother was Abigail, and his father was Jether the Ishmaelite.
18Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth. These were Azubah’s sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, and she bore Hur to him. 20Hur fathered Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel. 21After this, Hezron slept with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead. # Nm 26:29 Hezron had married her when he was 60 years old, and she bore Segub to him. 22Segub fathered Jair, who possessed 23 towns in the land of Gilead. 23But Geshur and Aram captured # Lit took from them Jair’s Villages # Or captured Havvoth-jair along with Kenath and its villages — 60 towns. All these were the sons of Machir father of Gilead. 24After Hezron’s death in Caleb-ephrathah, his wife Abijah bore Ashhur to him. He was the father of Tekoa.
25The sons of Jerahmeel, Hezron’s firstborn: Ram, his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26Jerahmeel had another wife named Atarah, who was the mother of Onam.
27The sons of Ram, Jerahmeel’s firstborn: Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
28Onam’s sons: Shammai and Jada.
Shammai’s sons: Nadab and Abishur. 29Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, who bore Ahban and Molid to him.
30Nadab’s sons: Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.
31Appaim’s son: Ishi.
Ishi’s son: Sheshan.
Sheshan’s descendant: Ahlai.
32The sons of Jada, brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without children.
33Jonathan’s sons: Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel.
34Sheshan had no sons, only daughters, but he did have an Egyptian servant whose name was Jarha. 35Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore Attai to him.
36Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad.
37Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed.
38Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah.
39Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Elasah.
40Elasah fathered Sismai, and Sismai fathered Shallum.
41Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama.
42The sons of Caleb brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha, his firstborn, fathered Ziph, and Mareshah, his second son, # Lit and the sons of Mareshah fathered Hebron.
43Hebron’s sons: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema.
44Shema fathered Raham, who fathered Jorkeam, and Rekem fathered Shammai.
45Shammai’s son was Maon, and Maon fathered Beth-zur.
46Caleb’s concubine Ephah was the mother of Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran fathered Gazez.
47Jahdai’s sons: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.
48Caleb’s concubine Maacah was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah. 49She was also the mother of Shaaph, Madmannah’s father, and of Sheva, the father of Machbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Achsah.
50These were Caleb’s descendants.
The sons of Hur, Ephrathah’s firstborn:
Shobal fathered Kiriath-jearim;
51Salma fathered Bethlehem,
and Hareph fathered Beth-gader.
52These were the descendants of Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim: Haroeh, half of the Manahathites, # Lit Manuhoth 53and the families of Kiriath-jearim — the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. The Zorathites and Eshtaolites descended from these.
54Salma’s sons: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites, 55and the families of scribes who lived in Jabez — the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of Rechab’s family.

Judah. 3The sons of Judah#2:3–4:23] The Chronicler had two reasons for placing his genealogy of the tribe of Judah before those of the other tribes, and for making it longer than all the others: his interest in David, who was of the tribe of Judah; and the prominence of descendants of that tribe among the Jews of the Chronicler’s time. were: Er, Onan, and Shelah; these three Bathshua, a Canaanite woman, bore to him. But Judah’s firstborn, Er, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so he took his life.#1 Chr 4:21; Gn 38:1–5; 46:12. 4Judah’s daughter-in-law Tamar bore him Perez and Zerah, so that he had five sons in all.#Gn 38:7, 13–30; 46:12; Mt 1:3.
5The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.#Gn 46:12. 6The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda—five in all.#1 Kgs 5:11. 7The sons of Zimri: Carmi. The sons of Carmi: Achar, who brought trouble upon Israel by violating the ban.#Jos 7:1, 18–21, 24–25; 22:20. 8The sons of Ethan: Azariah. 9The sons born to Hezron were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai.#Chelubai: a variant form of the name Caleb (vv. 18, 42), a different person from the Chelub mentioned in 4:11. #Mt 1:3.
10#These verses list the immediate ancestors of David. A similar list appears in Ru 4:18–22. Ram became the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, a prince of the Judahites.#Mt 1:4. 11#Nm 1:7; Mt 1:4–5. Nahshon became the father of Salmah. Salmah became the father of Boaz. 12Boaz became the father of Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse. 13#1 Sm 16:6–13; 17:13–14. 18#These verses record the descendants of Caleb. In 4:15 as well as frequently in the Pentateuch (see Nm 13:6; 14:6, 30; 26:65; etc.), Caleb is called the son of Jephunneh. Here his father is called Hezron, perhaps because the Calebites were reckoned as part of the clan of the Hezronites. By his wife Azubah, Caleb, son of Hezron, became the father of a daughter, Jerioth. Her sons were Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon.#1 Chr 2:24. 19When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur.#1 Chr 2:24. 20Hur became the father of Uri, and Uri became the father of Bezalel.#Ex 24:14; 31:2; 35:30; 2 Chr 1:5. 21Then Hezron had relations with the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old. She bore him Segub.#Nm 26:29; 27:1; 32:39; Jos 13:31; Jgs 5:14. 22Segub became the father of Jair, who possessed twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead.#Nm 32:41; 1 Kgs 4:13. 23Geshur and Aram took from them the villages of Jair, that is, Kenath and its towns, sixty cities in all, which had belonged to the sons of Machir, the father of Gilead.#Dt 3:14; Jos 13:30. 24After the death of Hezron, Caleb had relations with Ephrathah, the widow of his father Hezron, and she bore him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa.#1 Chr 2:19; 2 Sm 14:2; 2 Chr 11:6.
25The sons of Jerahmeel,#The Jerahmeelites were a clan living in the Negeb of Judah. the firstborn of Hezron, were Ram, the firstborn, then Bunah, Oren, and Ozem, his brothers.#1 Sm 27:10; 30:29; Jb 32:2. 26Jerahmeel also had another wife, named Atarah, who was the mother of Onam. 27The sons of Ram, the firstborn of Jerahmeel, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. 28The sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai were Nadab and Abishur. 29Abishur’s wife, who was named Abihail, bore him Ahban and Molid. 30The sons of Nadab were Seled and Appaim. Seled died childless. 31The sons of Appaim: Ishi. The sons of Ishi: Sheshan. The sons of Sheshan: Ahlai.#1 Chr 4:20. 32The sons of Jada, the brother of Shammai, were Jether and Jonathan. Jether died childless. 33The sons of Jonathan were Peleth and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel. 34Sheshan had no sons, only daughters; he had an Egyptian slave named Jarha. 35Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his slave Jarha, and she bore him Attai. 36Attai became the father of Nathan. Nathan became the father of Zabad. 37Zabad became the father of Ephlal. Ephlal became the father of Obed. 38Obed became the father of Jehu. Jehu became the father of Azariah. 39Azariah became the father of Helez. Helez became the father of Eleasah. 40Eleasah became the father of Sismai. Sismai became the father of Shallum. 41Shallum became the father of Jekamiah. Jekamiah became the father of Elishama.
42The sons of Caleb,#Another list (see vv. 18–24) of the Calebites, a clan inhabiting the south of Judah. the brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph. Then the sons of Mareshah, who was the father of Hebron. 43The sons of Hebron were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44Shema became the father of Raham, who was the father of Jorkeam. Rekem became the father of Shammai. 45The son of Shammai: Maon, who was the father of Beth-zur. 46Ephah, Caleb’s concubine, bore Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran became the father of Gazez. 47The sons of Jahdai were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph. 48Maacah, Caleb’s concubine, bore Sheber and Tirhanah. 49She also bore Shaaph, the father of Madmannah, Sheva, the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gibea. 50These were sons of Caleb, sons of Hur,#The Hurites were a clan dwelling to the south and west of Jerusalem and related to the Calebites. the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim, 51Salma, the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph, the father of Bethgader. 52The sons of Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim, were Reaiah, half of the Manahathites, 53and the clans of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. From these the Zorahites and the Eshtaolites derived.#Jgs 18:2. 54The sons of Salma were Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-Joab, half of the Manahathites, and the Zorites. 55The clans of the Sopherim dwelling in Jabez were the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. They were the Kenites, who descended from Hammath, the ancestor of the Rechabites.#Nm 24:21; Jgs 1:16; 4:11; 1 Sm 15:6; Jer 35.
