13Canaan fathered Sidon as his firstborn, then Heth, 14the Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, 15Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 16Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites.
17Shem’s # Gn 10:21-29 sons: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.
18Arpachshad fathered Shelah, and Shelah fathered Eber. 19Two sons were born to Eber. One of them was named Peleg # = Division because the earth was divided during his lifetime, and the name of his brother was Joktan. 20Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 21Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 22Ebal, Abimael, Sheba, 23Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All of these were Joktan’s sons.

Abraham’s Descendants
28Abraham’s sons: Isaac and Ishmael.
29These # Gn 25:12-16 are their family records: Nebaioth, Ishmael’s firstborn, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 30Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, 31Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These were Ishmael’s sons.
32The sons # Gn 25:1-4 born to Keturah, Abraham’s concubine: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Jokshan’s sons: Sheba and Dedan.

All of these were Keturah’s sons.

The Edomites
38Seir’s # Gn 36:20-30 sons: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan.
39Lotan’s sons: Hori and Homam. Timna was Lotan’s sister.
40Shobal’s sons: Alian, Manahath, Ebal, Shephi, and Onam.
Zibeon’s sons: Aiah and Anah.
41Anah’s son: Dishon.
Dishon’s sons: Hamran, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
42Ezer’s sons: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Jaakan.
Dishan’s sons: Uz and Aran.
43These # Gn 36:31-39 were the kings who ruled in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites: Bela son of Beor. Bela’s town was named Dinhabah. 44When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah # Is 34:6 ruled in his place. 45When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites # Jb 2:11 ruled in his place. 46When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, ruled in his place. Hadad’s town was named Avith. 47When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah ruled in his place. 48When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the Euphrates River ruled in his place. 49When Shaul died, Baal-hanan son of Achbor ruled in his place. 50When Baal-hanan died, Hadad ruled in his place. Hadad’s city was named Pai, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, daughter of Me-zahab. 51Then Hadad died.
Edom’s # Gn 36:40-43 chiefs: Timna, Alvah, # Alt Hb tradition reads Aliah Jetheth, 52Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 53Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 54Magdiel, and Iram.
These were Edom’s chiefs.

1Adam, Seth, Enosh,#1:1. The book begins with the list of names, that may seem odd to a modern reader, but in giving this genealogical line the writer of Chronicles is summarizing history. Instead of trying to provide information as to who all these individuals were, it is recommended that the relevant information is found in the historical books of the Bible from Genesis onwards. 2Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, 3Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah.
4The sons of Noah:#1:4. Septuagint reading: this line is absent in the Hebrew text. Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
5The sons#1:5. As has been noted elsewhere, “sons” can mean “descendants.” of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
6The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath,#1:6. Or Diphath. and Togarmah.
7The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, Rodanim.

18Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber.
19Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg,#1:19. The word means “divided.” because in his time the earth was divided; the name of his brother was Joktan.
20Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 21Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 22Obal,#1:22. Most manuscripts have Ebal, but see Genesis 10:28. Abimael, Sheba, 23Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. These were all Joktan's sons.
24Shem, Arphaxad,#1:24. Some Septuagint manuscripts add “Cainan” here. Shelah, 25Eber, Peleg, Reu, 26Serug, Nahor, Terah, 27and Abram (also called Abraham).
28The sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.
29These were their descendants: Nebaioth was the firstborn son of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 30Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, 31Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These were Ishmael's sons.

40The sons of Shobal: Alvan,#1:40. In most Hebrew manuscripts “Alian,” but some Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts have “Alvan.” See Genesis 36:23. Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam. The sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah.
41The son of Anah: Dishon. The sons of Dishon: Hemdan,#1:41. In most Hebrew manuscripts “Hamran,” but some Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts have “Hemdan.” See Genesis 36:26. Eshban, Ithran and Keran.
42The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.#1:42. In most Hebrew manuscripts “Zaavan” or “Jaakan,” but some Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts have “Akan.” See Genesis 36:27. The sons of Dishan:#1:42. Or “Dishon.” Uz and Aran.
43These were the kings who reigned over Edom before any Israelite king reigned over them: Bela son of Beor, the name of whose city was Dinhabah. 44When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah took over as king. 45When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites took over as king.
46When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, took over as king. He was the one who defeated Midian in the country of Moab. The name of his city was Avith. 47When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah took over as king. 48When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the River#1:48. Probably the Euphrates River. See Genesis 10:11. took over as king. 49When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan, son of Acbor, took over as king. 50When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad took over as king. The name of his city was Pau.#1:50. In most Hebrew manuscripts “Pai,” but some Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts have “Pau.” See Genesis 36:39. The name of his wife was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab. 51Then Hadad died. The chiefs of Edom#1:51. The name listing changes from kings to chiefs since after this time Edom was under the rule of Israel and so did not have its own king. were: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 52Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 53Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 54Magdiel, and Iram. These were Edom's chiefs.
