Psalms 49

Psalm 49
For the choir director; a psalm by Korah’s descendants.
1Listen to this, all you people.
Open your ears, all who live in the world—
2common people and important ones,
rich people and poor ones.
3My mouth will speak wise sayings,
the insights I have carefully considered.
4I will turn my attention to a proverb.
I will explain my riddle with the ⌞music of⌟ a lyre.
5Why should I be afraid in times of trouble,
when slanderers surround me with evil?
6They trust their riches
and brag about their abundant wealth.
7No one can ever buy back another person
or pay God a ransom for his life.
8The price to be paid for his soul is too costly.
He must always give up
9in order to live forever and never see the pit.
10Indeed, one can see that wise people die,
that foolish and stupid people meet the same end.
They leave their riches to others.
11Although they named their lands after themselves,
their graves #49:11 Greek, Syriac, Targum; Masoretic Text “their insides.” have become their homes for ages to come,
their dwelling places throughout every generation.
12But mortals will not continue here with what they treasure.
They are like animals that die.
13This is the final outcome for fools and their followers
who are delighted by what they say: Selah
14Like sheep, they are driven to hell
with death as their shepherd.
(Decent people will rule them in the morning.)
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far away from their comfortable homes.
15But God will buy me back from the power of hell
because he will take me. Selah
16Do not be afraid when someone becomes rich,
when the greatness of his house increases.
17He will not take anything with him when he dies.
His greatness cannot follow him.
18Even though he blesses himself while he is alive
(and they praise you when you do well for yourself),
19he must join the generation of his ancestors,
who will never see light ⌞again⌟.
20Mortals, with what they treasure, still don’t have understanding.
They are like animals that die.

Psalms 49
49
For the Music Director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
1Hear this, all you peoples; # Ps 78:1
give ear, all inhabitants of the world, # Isa 49:6
2both low and high,
rich and poor together. # Ps 62:9
3My mouth shall speak wisdom,
and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.
4I will incline my ear to a parable;
I will reveal my riddle with the music of the harp. # Nu 12:8; Ps 78:2
5Why should I fear in the days of evil,
when the iniquity of my foes surrounds me,
6those who trust in their wealth
and boast in the abundance of their riches? # Ps 52:7; Mk 10:24
7None of them can by any means redeem his brother,
nor give to God a ransom for him, # Mt 16:26
8for the redemption of their souls is costly; # Job 36:18–19
and it shall cease forever,
9that he should live on eternally,
and never see the pit. # Ps 16:10; 89:48
10For he sees that wise men die;
the fool and the stupid perish, # Ps 94:8
and leave their wealth to others. # Ps 39:6
11Their graves are their perpetual homes,
their dwelling places to all generations,
though they call their lands by their own names. # Ge 4:17
12Nevertheless man cannot remain in his splendor;
he is like the beasts that perish. # Ps 39:5; 49:20
13This is the way of those who are foolish, # Lk 12:20
and of their posterity who approve their sayings. Selah
14Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
Death shall be their shepherd;
the upright shall rule over them # Mal 4:3; 1Co 6:2 in the morning;
their form shall waste away in Sheol,
far from their dwelling.
15But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, # Hos 13:14
for He will receive me. # Ps 73:24 Selah
16Do not fear when a man becomes rich, # Ps 37:7
when the glory of his house is increased,
17for when he dies he will take nothing away;
his glory will not descend after him. # Job 27:19; 1Ti 6:7
18Though while he lives he blesses himself # Dt 29:19; Lk 12:19 —
for men will praise you when you do well for yourself—
19he will go to the generation of his fathers; # Ge 15:15; Job 33:30
they will never see light.
20A man who is in his splendor, yet without understanding,
is like the animals that perish. # Ps 49:12
