Psalms 49

Psalm 49
For the choir director; a psalm by Korah’s descendants.
1Listen to this, all you people.
Open your ears, all who live in the world—
2common people and important ones,
rich people and poor ones.
3My mouth will speak wise sayings,
the insights I have carefully considered.
4I will turn my attention to a proverb.
I will explain my riddle with the ⌞music of⌟ a lyre.
5Why should I be afraid in times of trouble,
when slanderers surround me with evil?
6They trust their riches
and brag about their abundant wealth.
7No one can ever buy back another person
or pay God a ransom for his life.
8The price to be paid for his soul is too costly.
He must always give up
9in order to live forever and never see the pit.
10Indeed, one can see that wise people die,
that foolish and stupid people meet the same end.
They leave their riches to others.
11Although they named their lands after themselves,
their graves #49:11 Greek, Syriac, Targum; Masoretic Text “their insides.” have become their homes for ages to come,
their dwelling places throughout every generation.
12But mortals will not continue here with what they treasure.
They are like animals that die.
13This is the final outcome for fools and their followers
who are delighted by what they say: Selah
14Like sheep, they are driven to hell
with death as their shepherd.
(Decent people will rule them in the morning.)
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far away from their comfortable homes.
15But God will buy me back from the power of hell
because he will take me. Selah
16Do not be afraid when someone becomes rich,
when the greatness of his house increases.
17He will not take anything with him when he dies.
His greatness cannot follow him.
18Even though he blesses himself while he is alive
(and they praise you when you do well for yourself),
19he must join the generation of his ancestors,
who will never see light ⌞again⌟.
20Mortals, with what they treasure, still don’t have understanding.
They are like animals that die.

Psalm 49
To the Overcomer: A Psalm for the sons of Korah.
1¶ Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
2Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
3My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart intelligence.
4I will incline mine ear to a parable; I will declare my enigma upon the harp.
5Why should I fear in the days of adversity when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
6¶ Those that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
7none of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him;
8(for the redemption of their soul is of great price, and they shall never pay it)
9that he should still live for ever and not see corruption.
10For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others.
11Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
12Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off.
13This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
14Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.
15¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah.
16Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him.
18Though while he lives, his life shall be blessed: and men will praise thee when thou art prosperous.
19He shall enter into the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light forever.
20Man that is in honour that does not understand is like the beasts that are cut off.
