Psalms 40

Psalm 40
For the choir director; a psalm by David.
1I waited patiently for the Lord.
He turned to me and heard my cry for help.
2He pulled me out of a horrible pit,
out of the mud and clay.
He set my feet on a rock
and made my steps secure.
3He placed a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see this and worship.
They will trust the Lord.
4Blessed is the person
who places his confidence in the Lord
and does not rely on arrogant people
or those who follow lies.
5You have done many miraculous things, O Lord my God.
You have made many wonderful plans for us.
No one compares to you!
I will tell others about your miracles,
which are more than I can count.
6You were not pleased with sacrifices and offerings.
You have dug out two ears for me.
You did not ask for burnt offerings or sacrifices for sin.
7Then I said, “I have come!
(It is written about me in the scroll of the book.)
8I am happy to do your will, O my God.”
Your teachings are deep within me.
9I will announce the good news of righteousness
among those assembled for worship.
I will not close my lips.
You know that, O Lord.
10I have not buried your righteousness deep in my heart.
I have been outspoken about your faithfulness and your salvation.
I have not hidden your mercy and your truth
from those assembled for worship.
11Do not withhold your compassion from me, O Lord.
May your mercy and your truth always protect me.
12Countless evils have surrounded me.
My sins have caught up with me so that I can no longer see.
They outnumber the hairs on my head.
I have lost heart.
13O Lord, please rescue me!
Come quickly to help me, O Lord! #40:13 Verses 13–17 are virtually identical in wording to Psalm 70.
14Let all those who seek to end my life
be confused and put to shame.
Let those who want my downfall
be turned back and disgraced.
15Let those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
be stunned by their own shame.
16Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad because of you.
Let those who love your salvation continually say,
“The Lord is great!”
17But I am oppressed and needy.
May the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my savior.
O my God, do not delay!

Tehillim (Psalms) 40
40
1I waited, waited for יהוה; And He inclined to me, and heard my cry.
2And He drew me Out of the pit of destruction, Out of the muddy clay, And He set my feet upon a rock, He is establishing my steps.
3Then He put a new song in my mouth; Praise to our Elohim; Many do see it and fear, And trust in יהוה.
4Blessed is that man who has made יהוה his trust, And has not turned to the proud, And those turning aside to falsehood.
5O יהוה my Elohim, many are the wonders Which You have done, and Your purposes toward us; There is no one to compare with You; I declare and speak: They are too many to be numbered.
6Slaughtering#See Heb. 10:5, 6 and meal offering You did not desire; You have opened my ears; Ascending offering and sin offering You did not ask for.
7Then I said, “See, I have come; In the scroll of the Book it is prescribed for me.
8I have delighted to do Your pleasure, O my Elohim, And Your Torah is within my heart.”#See Psa. 37:31; Psa. 119:11; Isa. 51:7; Heb. 10:7-9
9I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness, In the great assembly; See, I do not restrain my lips, O יהוה, You know.
10I did not conceal Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your trustworthiness and Your deliverance; I did not hide Your loving-commitment and Your truth From the great assembly.
11Do not withhold Your compassion from me, O יהוה; Let Your loving-commitment and Your truth always watch over me.
12For evils without number have surrounded me; My crookednesses have overtaken me, And I have been unable to see; They became more than the hairs of my head; And my heart has failed me.
13Be pleased, O יהוה, to deliver me; O יהוה, hasten to help me!
14Let those who seek to destroy my life Be ashamed and abashed altogether; Let those who are desiring my evil Be driven back and put to shame.
15Let those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” Be appalled at their own shame.
16Let all those who seek You Rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your deliverance always say, “יהוה be exalted!”
17But I am poor and needy; Let יהוה think upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my Elohim, do not delay!
