Psalms 110
110
Psalm 110
A psalm by David.
1The Lord said to my Lord,
“Take the honored position—the one next to me [God the Father] on the heavenly throne
until I put your enemies under your control.”#110:1 Or “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2The Lord will extend your powerful scepter from Zion.
Rule your enemies who surround you.
3Your people will volunteer when you call up your army.
Your young people will come to you in holy splendor
like dew in the early morning.#110:3 Or “You have the dew of your youth.”
4The Lord has taken an oath and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever, in the way Melchizedek was a priest.”
5The Lord is at your right side.
He will crush kings on the day of his anger.
6He will pass judgment on the nations
and fill them with dead bodies.
Throughout the earth he will crush ⌞their⌟ heads.
7He will drink from the brook along the road.
He will hold his head high.

Psalms 110
110
A psalm of David.
1The Lord said to my Lord,#110:1 “My Lord”: by the time of the New Testament this was applied to the Messiah, but it is not made explicit in the text here. (See for example Matthew 22:41-46; Mark 12:35-37; Luke 20:41-44). “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for you.#110:1. “Footstool”: A symbol of submission.”
2The Lord will expand your royal power from Zion; you will rule over your enemies.
3Your people willingly follow you on the day when your power is revealed on the holy mountains, renewed in strength every morning like dew at dawn.#110:3. This verse has many problems in translation, particularly at the end. Literally: “from the womb from the dawn to you the dew of our youth.”
4The Lord has made a vow he will not break: “You are a priest forever, following the order of Melchizedek.”
5The Lord stands right beside you to support you; he will strike down kings in his anger.
6He will execute judgment on the nations, filling their lands with corpses. He will strike down those who rule all over the earth.
7He#110:7. Referring to the king that is made explicit in verse 2, not the Lord God. will drink from streams beside the path.#110:7. In other words the king will be refreshed. Therefore#110:7. “Therefore”: probably meaning for all the reasons cited in the psalm. he will be victorious.
