Psalms 105

Psalm 105
1Give thanks to the Lord.
Call on him.
Make known among the nations what he has done.
2Sing to him.
Make music to praise him.
Meditate on all the miracles he has performed.
3Brag about his holy name.
Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4Search for the Lord and his strength.
Always seek his presence.
5Remember the miracles he performed,
the amazing things he did, and the judgments he pronounced,
6you descendants of his servant Abraham,
you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.
7He is the Lord our God.
His judgments are pronounced throughout the earth.
8He always remembers his promise,#105:8 Or “covenant.”
the word that he commanded for a thousand generations,
9the promise that he made to Abraham,
and his sworn oath to Isaac.
10He confirmed it as a law for Jacob,
as an everlasting promise to Israel,
11by saying, “I will give you the land of Canaan.
It is your share of the inheritance.”
12While the people of Israel were few in number,
a small group of foreigners living in that land,
13they wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
14He didn’t permit anyone to oppress them.
He warned kings about them:
15“Do not touch my anointed ones
or harm my prophets.”
16He brought famine to the land.
He took away their food supply.
17He sent a man ahead of them.
He sent Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18They hurt his feet with shackles,
and cut into his neck with an iron collar.
19The Lord’s promise tested him through fiery trials
until his prediction came true.
20The king sent someone to release him.
The ruler of nations set him free.
21He made Joseph the master of his palace
and the ruler of all his possessions.
22Joseph trained the king’s officers the way he wanted
and taught his respected leaders wisdom.
23Then Israel came to Egypt.
Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.
24The Lord made his people grow rapidly in number
and stronger than their enemies.
25He changed their minds so that they hated his people,
and they dealt treacherously with his servants.
26He sent his servant Moses, and he sent Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27They displayed his miraculous signs among them
and did amazing things in the land of Ham.
28He sent darkness and made ⌞their land⌟ dark.
They did not rebel against his orders.
29He turned their water into blood
and caused their fish to die.
30He made their land swarm with frogs,
even in the kings’ bedrooms.
31He spoke, and swarms of flies and gnats
infested their whole territory.
32He gave them hail and lightning
instead of rain throughout their land.
33He struck their grapevines and fig trees
and smashed the trees in their territory.
34He spoke, and countless locusts and grasshoppers came.
35They devoured all the plants in the land.
They devoured the crops in the fields.
36He killed all the firstborn sons,
the first ones born in the land when their fathers were young.
37He brought Israel out with silver and gold,
and no one among his tribes stumbled.
38The Egyptians were terrified of Israel,
so they were glad when Israel left.
39He spread out a cloud as a protective covering
and a fire to light up the night.
40The Israelites asked, and he brought them quail
and filled them with bread from heaven.
41He opened a rock, and water gushed
and flowed like a river through the dry places.
42He remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham.
43He brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with a song of joy.
44He gave them the lands of ⌞other⌟ nations,
and they inherited what others had worked for
45so that they would obey his laws
and follow his teachings.
Hallelujah!

Psalms 105
105
1Give the Lord thanks, worship his wonderful nature, let people know what he's done!
2Sing to him, sing his praises; tell everyone the great things he's done!
3Be proud of his holy character; be happy, all who come to the Lord!
4Look for the Lord, and his strength; always look to be in his presence.
5Remember all the wonderful things he's done, the miracles he's performed, and the judgments#105:5. In the context, probably referring to the judgments on heathen nations. he's carried out,
6descendants of Abraham, children of Israel, his chosen people.
7He is the Lord, our God, his judgments cover the whole earth.
8He remembers his agreement forever, the promise he made lasts for a thousand generations;
9the agreement he made with Abraham, the vow he gave to Isaac.
10The Lord legally confirmed it with Jacob, he made this binding agreement with Israel:
11saying to you, “I will give the land of Canaan for you to possess.”
12He said this when they were only a few, just a small group of foreigners in the land.
13They wandered from country to country, from one kingdom to the next.
14He didn't let anyone treat them badly; warning kings to leave them alone:
15“Don't touch my chosen people; don't harm my prophets!”
16He caused#105:16. Literally, “called.” a famine in the Land of Canaan so that there was no food.
17Before that he sent a man, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.#105:17. This refers to the story in Genesis of Joseph being sold as a slave and taken to Egypt.
18They hurt his feet by placing them in shackles, and they put an iron collar around his neck,
19until the time predicted came when the Lord tested him.
20The king#105:20. Referring to the Pharaoh. sent for him and released him; the king of the people set him free.
21He put Joseph in charge of the royal household, manager of everything he had,
22to teach#105:22. Septuagint reading. the king's officials whatever he wanted, to make the king's advisors wise.
23Then Israel entered Egypt—Jacob settled as a foreigner in the land of Ham.#105:23. “Land of Ham”: an old term for Egypt.
24The Lord made his people more fertile and more powerful than their enemies.
25He made the Egyptians#105:25. Literally, “them.” In the context it is the people of Egypt, particularly the Pharaoh. change their minds and hate his people and act deceptively towards them.
26He sent his servant Moses, together with Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27They#105:27. Or “he.” carried out his miraculous signs among the Egyptians, his wonders in the land of Ham.
28He plunged the country into darkness—for hadn't they defied what the Lord had said?#105:28 “For hadn't they defied what the Lord had said?” This applies to the Egyptians. Alternatively it could be translated, “for they had not defied what the Lord had said,” referring to Moses and Aaron.
29He turned their water into blood, killing all the fish.
30Then he sent a plague of frogs across the land that even entered the bedrooms of their rulers.
31He gave the command, and flies spread throughout their land; mosquitoes were everywhere.
32He rained down hail on them, and lightning flashed across their land.
33He struck down their grape vines, and tore down their trees.
34He gave the command, and swarms of locusts came—countless locusts:
35they ate up all the vegetation in their land; they consumed all the growing crops.
36He killed all the firstborn in Egypt, the first to be produced in their vigor and strength.
37Then he led his people out of Egypt, carrying silver and gold—not one among the tribes was stumbling along.
38The Egyptians were delighted to see them go, for they were frightened of the Israelites.
39He spread a cloud above them as a covering, and at night a fire to give them light.
40He gave them quails to eat when they asked him; he fed them with the bread of heaven until they were full.
41He split the rock open, and water gushed out—a river flowing through the desert.
42For he remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham.
43So he led his people out, his chosen ones, as they sang for joy.
44He gave them the lands of the heathen nations, and they inherited what other people had worked for.
45The Lord did this so they could follow his instructions and keep his laws. Praise the Lord!
