Proverbs 9

Wisdom Hosts a Banquet
1Wisdom has built her house.
She has carved out her seven pillars.
2She has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has set her table.
3She has sent out her servant girls.
She calls from the highest places in the city,
4“Whoever is gullible turn in here!”
She says to a person without sense,
5“Come, eat my bread,
and drink the wine I have mixed.
6Stop being gullible and live.
Start traveling the road to understanding.”
Wisdom Prolongs Life
7Whoever corrects a mocker receives abuse.
Whoever warns a wicked person gets hurt.
8Do not warn a mocker, or he will hate you.
Warn a wise person, and he will love you.
9Give ⌞advice⌟ to a wise person,
and he will become even wiser.
Teach a righteous person,
and he will learn more.
10The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11You will live longer because of me,
and years will be added to your life.
12If you are wise, your wisdom will help you.
If you mock, you alone will be held responsible.
Stupidity Imitates Wisdom’s Banquet
13The woman Stupidity is loud, gullible, and ignorant.
14She sits at the doorway of her house.
She is enthroned on the high ground of the city
15and calls to those who pass by,
those minding their own business,
16“Whoever is gullible turn in here!”
She says to a person without sense,
17“Stolen waters are sweet,
and food eaten in secret is tasty.”
18But he does not know
that the souls of the dead are there,
that her guests are in the depths of hell.

The Way of Wisdom
1#Eph 2:20–22; Mt 16:18Wisdom has built her house,
she has hewn out her seven pillars;
2#Pr 23:30 she has killed her beasts, she has mixed her wine,
she has also furnished her table.
3#Pr 9:14; 8:1–3 She has sent out her maidens,
she cries out from the highest places of the city,
4#Pr 6:32; 9:16 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.”
As for him who wants understanding, she says to him,
5#SS 5:1; Jn 6:27 “Come, eat of my bread,
and drink of the wine which I have mixed.
6Forsake foolishness and live,
and go in the way of understanding.”
7He who reproves a scorner gets shame for himself,
and he who rebukes a wicked man gets hurt.
8#Ps 141:5; Mt 7:6 Do not reprove a scorner, lest he hate you;
rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
9#Pr 1:5 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser;
teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10#Pr 1:7; Job 28:28; Ps 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11#Pr 10:27; 3:16 For by me your days will be multiplied,
and the years of your life will be increased.
12#Job 22:2–3 If you are wise, you will be wise for yourself,
but if you scorn, you alone will bear it.
The Way of Foolishness
13#Pr 7:11; 5:6 A foolish woman is clamorous;
she is simple, and knows nothing.
14#Pr 9:3 For she sits at the door of her house,
on a seat in the high places of the city,
15to call those who pass by
who go right on their way:
16“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.”
And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
17#Pr 20:17; 30:20 “Stolen waters are sweet,
and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
18#Pr 7:27 But he does not know that the dead are there,
and that her guests are in the depths of the grave.
