Proverbs 13
13
A Wise Son Lives Righteously
1A wise son listens to his father’s discipline,
but a mocker does not listen to reprimands.
2A person eats well as a result of his speaking ability,
but the appetite of treacherous people ⌞craves⌟ violence.
3Whoever controls his mouth protects his own life.
Whoever has a big mouth comes to ruin.
4A lazy person craves food and there is none,
but the appetite of hard-working people is satisfied.
5A righteous person hates lying,
but a wicked person behaves with shame and disgrace.
6Righteousness protects the honest way of life,
but wickedness ruins a sacrifice for sin.
7One person pretends to be rich but has nothing.
Another pretends to be poor but has great wealth.
8A person’s riches are the ransom for his life,
but the poor person does not pay attention to threats.
9The light of righteous people beams brightly,
but the lamp of wicked people will be snuffed out.
10Arrogance produces only quarreling,
but those who take advice gain wisdom.
11Wealth ⌞gained⌟ through injustice dwindles away,
but whoever gathers little by little has plenty.
12Delayed hope makes one sick at heart,
but a fulfilled longing is a tree of life.
13Whoever despises ⌞God’s⌟ words will pay the penalty,
but the one who fears ⌞God’s⌟ commands will be rewarded.
14The teachings of a wise person are a fountain of life
to turn ⌞one⌟ away from the grasp of death.
15Good sense brings favor,
but the way of treacherous people is always the same.#13:15 Masoretic Text; Greek “is their disaster.”
16Any sensible person acts with knowledge,
but a fool displays stupidity.
17An undependable messenger gets into trouble,
but a dependable envoy brings healing.
18Poverty and shame come to a person who ignores discipline,
but whoever pays attention to constructive criticism will be honored.
19A fulfilled desire is sweet to the soul,
but turning from evil is disgusting to fools.
20Whoever walks with wise people will be wise,
but whoever associates with fools will suffer.
21Disaster hunts down sinners,
but righteous people are rewarded with good.
22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren,
but the wealth of sinners is stored away for a righteous person.
23When poor people are able to plow, there is much food,
but a person is swept away where there is no justice.
24Whoever refuses to spank his son hates him,
but whoever loves his son disciplines him from early on.
25A righteous person eats to satisfy his appetite,
but the bellies of wicked people are always empty.

Proverbs 13
13
1A wise son listens to his father’s advice, but a proud son will not listen to correction.
2People get good things for the words they say, but those who cannot be trusted say only bad things.
3People who are careful about what they say will save their lives, but those who speak without thinking will be destroyed.
4Lazy people always want things but never get them. Those who work hard get plenty.
5Good people hate lies, but the wicked do evil, shameful things.
6Goodness protects honest people, but evil destroys those who love to sin.
7Some people pretend they are rich, but they have nothing. Others pretend they are poor, but they are really rich.
8The rich might have to pay a ransom to save their lives, but the poor never receive such threats.
9The light of those who do right shines brighter and brighter, but the lamp of the wicked becomes darker and darker.#13:9 Or “The light of those who do right is happy; the lamp of the wicked goes out.”
10Pride causes arguments, but those who listen to others are wise.
11Money gained by cheating others will soon be gone. Money earned through hard work will grow and grow.
12Hope that is delayed makes you sad, but a wish that comes true fills you with joy.
13Those who reject a command hurt themselves; those who respect a command will be rewarded.
14The teaching of the wise is a source of life; their words will save you from deadly traps.
15People like a person with good sense, but life is hard for someone who cannot be trusted.
16Wise people always think before they do anything, but fools show how stupid they are by what they do.
17Disaster will catch up to the wicked messenger, but a runner who can be trusted will bring peace.
18If you refuse to learn from your mistakes, you will be poor, and no one will respect you. If you listen when you are criticized, you will be honored.
19People are happy when they get what they want. But stupid people want nothing but evil, and they refuse to change.
20Be friends with those who are wise, and you will become wise. Choose fools to be your friends, and you will have trouble.
21Trouble chases sinners wherever they go, but good things happen to good people.
22It is good to have something to pass down to your grandchildren. But wealth hidden away by sinners will be given to those who live right.
23The poor might have good land that produces plenty of food, but bad decisions can take it away.#13:23 Or “The fields of the poor might produce plenty of food, but the unjust often take it away.”
24If you don’t correct your children, you don’t love them. If you love them, you will be quick to discipline them.
25Good people will have plenty to eat, but the wicked will go hungry.
