Elihu Continues: God’s Ways Are Beyond Human Understanding
1“My heart pounds because of this
and jumps out of its place.
2Listen! Listen to the roar of God’s voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3He flashes his lightning everywhere under heaven.
His light flashes to the ends of the earth.
4It is followed by the roar of his voice.
He thunders with his majestic voice.
He doesn’t hold the lightning back when his thunder is heard.
5God’s voice thunders in miraculous ways.
It does great things that we cannot understand.
6“He says to the snow, ‘Fall to the ground,’
and to the pouring rain, ‘Rain harder!’
7He makes it impossible to do anything #37:7 Or “He seals up every person’s hand.”
so that people will recognize his work.
8Animals go into their dens
and stay in their lairs.
9A storm comes out of its chamber.
It is cold because of the strong winds.
10God’s breath produces ice,
and the seas freeze over.
11Yes, he loads the thick clouds with moisture
and scatters his lightning from the clouds.
12He guides the clouds as they churn round and round
over the face of the inhabited earth
to do everything he orders them.
13Whether for discipline,
or for ⌞the good of⌟ his earth,
or out of mercy,
he makes the storm appear.
14“Open your ears to this, Job.
Stop and consider God’s miracles.
15Do you know how God controls them
and makes the lightning flash from his clouds?
16Do you know how the clouds drift
(these are the miracles of the one who knows everything),
17you whose clothes are hot and sweaty,
when the earth is calm under a south wind?
18Can you stretch out the skies with him
and make them as firm as a mirror made of metal?
19Teach us what we should say to him.
We are unable to prepare ⌞a case⌟ because of darkness.
20Should he be told that I want to speak?
Can a person speak when he is confused?
21People can’t look at the sun
when it’s bright among the clouds
or after the wind has blown and cleared those clouds away.
22A golden light comes from the north.
A terrifying majesty is around God.
23The Almighty, whom we can’t reach,
is great in power and judgment,
has more than enough righteousness,
and does not oppress.
24That is why people should fear him.
He does not respect those who think they’re wise.”

Job 37

Job 37
1¶ At this also my heart trembles and is moved out of its place.
2Hear attentively his terrible voice and the word that goes out of his mouth.
3He shall place it straight under the whole of the heavens, and his light shall extend unto the ends of the earth.
4After it shall the sound roar; his valiant voice shall thunder; and he will not stay them even when his voice is heard.
5God shall thunder marvelously with his voice; he does great things, which we cannot comprehend.
6¶ For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; rain after rain, and rain after rain in his strength.
7He seals up the hand of every man that all men may know his work.
8Then the beast shall go into its lair and inhabit its dwelling.
9Out of the south comes the whirlwind and cold out of the north wind.
10By the breath of God ice is given; and the broad waters are constrained.
11In addition to this, with clarity he wearies the thick clouds; and he scatters them with his light.
12And they are turned round about by his counsels; that they may do whatever he commands them upon the face of the world in the earth.
13On some occasions for correction, on others for his land, on others for mercy he causes them to appear.
14¶ Hearken unto this, Job; stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
15Dost thou know when God disposed them and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
16Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of the one who is perfect in knowledge?
17How thy garments are warm, when he quiets the earth by the south wind?
18Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong and as a molten looking glass?
19Teach us what we should say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
20Shall it be told him when I speak? When someone is swallowed up shall it be told him?
21¶ Also, sometimes the clear light which is in the heavens is not seen, but the wind passes and cleanses them.
22Fair weather comes out of the north; with God is terrible majesty.
23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out; he is excellent in power and in judgment, and in plenty of righteousness he will not afflict.
24Men, therefore, shall fear him; all the crafty of heart shall not see him.
