Isaiah 51
51
The LORD Will Save His People
1Listen to me, you people who pursue what is right and seek the Lord.
Look to the rock from which you were cut
and to the quarry from which you were dug.
2Look to Abraham, your ancestor,
and to Sarah, from whom you are descended.
When I called Abraham, he was childless.
I blessed him and gave him many descendants.
3So the Lord will comfort Zion.
He will comfort all those who live among its ruins.
He will make its desert like Eden.
He will make its wilderness like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
thanksgiving and the sound of singing.
4Pay attention to me, my people.
Open your ears to hear me, my nation.
My teachings will go out from me.
My justice will become a light for the people.
5My righteousness is near.
My salvation is on the way.
I will bring justice to people.
The coastlands put their hope in me,
and they wait eagerly for me.
6Look at the sky.
Look at the earth below.
The sky will vanish like smoke.
The earth will wear out like clothing,
and those who live there will die like flies.
But my salvation will last forever,
and my righteousness will never fail.
7Listen to me, you people who know righteousness,
you people who have my teachings in your hearts.
Don’t be afraid of being insulted by people.
Don’t be discouraged by their ridicule.
8Moths will eat them like clothing.
Worms will devour them like wool.
But my righteousness will last forever,
and my salvation will last throughout every generation.
9Wake up! Wake up! Clothe yourself with strength, O Lord!
Wake up as you did in days long past, as in generations long ago.
Didn’t you cut Rahab #51:9 Rahab is the name of a demonic creature who opposes God. into pieces and stab the serpent?
10Didn’t you dry up the sea, the water of the great ocean?
You made a road in the depths of the sea
so that the people reclaimed ⌞by the Lord⌟
might pass through it.
11The people ransomed by the Lord will return.
They will come to Zion singing with joy.
Everlasting happiness will be on their heads ⌞as a crown⌟.
They will be glad and joyful.
They will have no sorrow or grief.
12I alone am the one who comforts you.
Why, then, are you afraid of mortals, who must die,
of humans, who are like grass?
13Why have you forgotten the Lord, your Creator?
He stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth.
Why should you live in constant fear of the fury
of those who oppress you,
of those who are ready to destroy you?
Where is the fury of those who oppress you?
14Chained prisoners will be set free.
They will not die in prison.
They will not go without food.
15I am the Lord your God who stirs up the sea
and makes its waves roar.
My name is the Lord of Armies.
16I put my words in your mouth
and sheltered you in the palm of my hand.
I stretched out the heavens,
laid the foundations of the earth,
and said to Zion, “You are my people.”
Wake Up, Jerusalem
17Wake up! Wake up!
Stand up, Jerusalem!
You drank from the cup in the Lord’s hand.
That cup was filled with his anger.
You drank from the bowl, the cup that makes people stagger,
and you drained it!
18From all the children she gave birth to,
there was no one to guide her.
From all the children she raised,
there was no one to take her by the hand.
19Twice as many disasters have happened to you.
Who will feel sorry for you?
Violence, destruction, famine, and war have happened to you.
Who will comfort you?
20Your children have fainted.
They lie sleeping at every street corner.
They are like an antelope caught in a net.
They experience the anger of the Lord,
the fury of your God.
21Listen to this, you humble people
who are drunk but not from wine.
22The Lord your God defends his people.
This is what your master says:
I’m taking from your hand the cup that makes people stagger,
the bowl, the cup of my fury.
You will never drink from it again.
23I will put it in the hands of those who made you suffer.
They said to you, “Lie down so that we can walk over you.”
So you made your back like the ground
and like a street for them to cross.

Isaiah 51
51
The Eternal Salvation of Zion
1Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, # Ps 94:15; Isa 51:7
you who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were hewn
and to the quarry from which you were dug.
2Look to Abraham your father
and to Sarah who bore you;
for I called him alone,
and blessed him, and multiplied him. # Eze 33:24
3For the Lord shall comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places; # Isa 52:9
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
and her desert like the garden of the Lord; # Ge 13:10
joy and gladness shall be found in it,
thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
4Listen to Me, O My people;
and give ear to Me, O My nation:
for a law shall proceed from Me, # Isa 2:3
and I will set My justice as a light of the peoples. # Isa 42:6
5My righteousness is near, # Isa 46:13
My salvation has gone forth,
and My arms shall judge the peoples;
the coastlands shall wait for Me, # Isa 42:4
and for My arm they shall expectantly wait.
6Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look on the earth beneath.
For the heavens shall vanish away like smoke,
and the earth shall grow old like a garment,
and those who dwell in it shall die in like manner;
but My salvation shall be forever,
and My righteousness shall not be abolished. # Isa 34:4; Mt 24:35
7Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
the people in whose heart is My law; # Ps 37:31
do not fear the reproach of men
nor be afraid of their revilings. # Mt 5:11
8For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, # Isa 50:9
and the worm shall eat them like wool;
but My righteousness shall be forever
and My salvation from generation to generation.
9Awake, awake, put on strength,
O arm of the Lord. # Isa 52:1
Awake as in the ancient days,
in the generations of old.
Was it not You who cut Rahab to pieces
and wounded the dragon? # Job 26:12; Ps 74:13–14; 89:10; Isa 27:1
10Was it not You who dried up the sea,
the waters of the great deep,
who made the depths of the sea a pathway
for the ransomed to pass over? # Ex 14:21–22; 15:13
11Therefore, the redeemed of the Lord shall return
and come with singing to Zion,
and everlasting joy shall be upon their head.
They shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. # Isa 35:10; Rev 7:17
12I, even I, am He who comforts you.
Who are you that you should be afraid of a man who shall die, # Ps 118:6; Isa 2:22
and of the son of man who shall be made as grass,
13and forget the Lord your maker
who has stretched out the heavens # Ps 104:2; Isa 17:10
and laid the foundations of the earth?
And have feared continually every day
because of the fury of the oppressor
as he makes ready to destroy?
Yet where is the fury of the oppressor?
14The exile shall soon be freed,
and shall not die in the dungeon, # Isa 52:2
nor will his bread be lacking.
15But I am the Lord your God
who divided the sea whose waves roared;
the Lord of Hosts is His name. # Jer 31:35
16I have put My words in your mouth, # Dt 18:18; Isa 59:21
and I have covered you in the shadow of My hand
that I may plant the heavens,
and lay the foundations of the earth,
and say to Zion, “You are My people.”
The Wrath of God Ceases
17Awake, awake,
stand up, O Jerusalem, # Isa 52:1
you who have drunk at the hand of the Lord
the cup of His fury; # Job 21:20
the cup of reeling
you have drained to the dregs.
18There is no one to guide her
among all the sons she has brought forth;
nor is there anyone to take hold of her hand
of all the sons that she has brought up. # Isa 49:21
19These two things have befallen you; # Isa 47:9
who shall be mournful for you?
Desolation, and destruction, # Am 7:2 and famine, and sword—
how shall I comfort you?
20Your sons have fainted;
they lie at the head of all the streets # La 2:11–12
as an antelope in a net;
they are full of the fury of the Lord,
the rebuke of your God.
21Therefore please hear this,
you afflicted who are drunk but not with wine.
22Thus says your Lord, the Lord,
and your God who pleads the cause of His people:
Behold, I have taken out of your hand
the cup of reeling,
even the dregs of the cup of My fury; # Isa 51:17
you will never drink it again.
23But I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you,
who have said to you,
“Lie down that we may walk over you.” # Jos 10:24
And you have laid your back as the ground
and as the street for those who walk on it.
