Boaz Redeems Ruth
1Now Boaz had gone up to #2 Sam. 15:2; 18:4, 24, 33; 19:8; Ps. 127:5 the gate and sat down there. And behold, #ch. 2:20the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2And he took ten men #1 Kgs. 21:8; Prov. 31:23of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 4So I thought I would tell you of it and say, #Lev. 25:25; [Jer. 32:7, 8]‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you#4:4 Hebrew he will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth#4:5 Masoretic Text you also buy it from Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order #ver. 10; ch. 3:13; Deut. 25:5, 6to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” 6#ch. 3:12, 13Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 # See Deut. 25:7-10 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. 8So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. 9Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to #ch. 1:2, 4, 5Chilion and to Mahlon. 10Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, #ver. 5to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” 11Then all the people who were #See ver. 1 at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, #See Gen. 29:31–30:24; 35:16-18 who together #Deut. 25:9 built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in #Gen. 35:16, 19 Ephrathah and #ver. 14be renowned in Bethlehem, 12and may your house be like the house of Perez, #Gen. 38:29; 1 Chr. 2:4; Matt. 1:3 whom Tamar bore to Judah, because #1 Sam. 2:20of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
Ruth and Boaz Marry
13So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, #Gen. 29:31; 33:5and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14#[Luke 1:58] Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without #ch. 2:20 a redeemer, and may his name #ver. 11be renowned in Israel! 15He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, #1 Sam. 1:8who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 16Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17#Luke 1:59And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
The Genealogy of David
18Now these are the generations of Perez: #For ver. 18-22, see 1 Chr. 2:4-15; Matt. 1:3-6Perez fathered Hezron, 19Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20#Num. 1:7; [Ex. 6:23]Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

Boaz Marries Ruth
1Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. 2And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. 3And he said unto the kinsman, Na-o´mi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elim´elech's: 4and I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it besides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. 5Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Na-o´mi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. 6And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.

Deut 25.9. Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor: and this was a testimony in Israel. 8Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe. 9And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elim´elech's, and all that was Chil´i-on's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Na-o´mi. 10Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. 11#Gen 29.31—35.18. And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Le´ah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Eph´ratah, and be famous in Bethlehem: 12#Gen 38.27-30. and let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman.
13So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. 14And the women said unto Na-o´mi, Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. 15And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter-in-law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath borne him. 16And Na-o´mi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17And the women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Na-o´mi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Ammin´adab, 20and Ammin´adab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, 21and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
