Boaz Redeems Ruth
1Now Boaz had gone up to #2 Sam. 15:2; 18:4, 24, 33; 19:8; Ps. 127:5 the gate and sat down there. And behold, #ch. 2:20the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2And he took ten men #1 Kgs. 21:8; Prov. 31:23of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 4So I thought I would tell you of it and say, #Lev. 25:25; [Jer. 32:7, 8]‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you#4:4 Hebrew he will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth#4:5 Masoretic Text you also buy it from Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order #ver. 10; ch. 3:13; Deut. 25:5, 6to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” 6#ch. 3:12, 13Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 # See Deut. 25:7-10 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. 8So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. 9Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to #ch. 1:2, 4, 5Chilion and to Mahlon. 10Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, #ver. 5to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” 11Then all the people who were #See ver. 1 at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, #See Gen. 29:31–30:24; 35:16-18 who together #Deut. 25:9 built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in #Gen. 35:16, 19 Ephrathah and #ver. 14be renowned in Bethlehem, 12and may your house be like the house of Perez, #Gen. 38:29; 1 Chr. 2:4; Matt. 1:3 whom Tamar bore to Judah, because #1 Sam. 2:20of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
Ruth and Boaz Marry
13So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, #Gen. 29:31; 33:5and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14#[Luke 1:58] Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without #ch. 2:20 a redeemer, and may his name #ver. 11be renowned in Israel! 15He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, #1 Sam. 1:8who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 16Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17#Luke 1:59And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
The Genealogy of David
18Now these are the generations of Perez: #For ver. 18-22, see 1 Chr. 2:4-15; Matt. 1:3-6Perez fathered Hezron, 19Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20#Num. 1:7; [Ex. 6:23]Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

Ruth 4
1¶ And Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and, behold, the redeemer of whom Boaz spoke came by unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! Come here and sit down. And he came and sat down.
2Then he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, Sit down here. And they sat down.
3And he said unto the redeemer, Naomi, that is come again out of the field of Moab, sold a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s,
4and I decided to cause thee to know this and tell thee to take it before the inhabitants and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it, but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me that I may know, for there is no one to redeem it besides thee, and I after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.
5Then Boaz replied, The day that thou dost receive the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must also receive Ruth, the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
6And the redeemer said, I cannot redeem it for myself lest I ruin my own inheritance; redeem thou; I cede my right to you, for I shall not be able to redeem it.
7Now for a long time in Israel there had been this custom concerning redemption or contracts, that for the confirmation of all matters: one plucked off his shoe and gave it to his neighbour, and this was a testimony in Israel.
8Therefore, the former owner of the right of redemption said unto Boaz, Buy it thyself. So he drew off his shoe.
9¶ And Boaz said unto the elders and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi.
10Moreover, I also take Ruth, the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, as my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance that the name of the dead not be cut off from among his brethren and from the gate of his place. Ye shall be witnesses of this today.
11And all the people that were in the gate and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, who built the house of Israel; and be thou a man of valour in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem;
12let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman.
13¶ So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife, and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.
14And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, who has not left thee this day without a redeemer, whose name shall be famous in Israel.
15And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy soul and a sustainer in thy old age, for thy daughter-in-law, whom thou doth love, who is better to thee than seven sons, has given birth.
16And Naomi took the child and laid it in her bosom and was his nurse.
17And the women, her neighbours, named him, saying, There is a son born to Naomi, and they called his name Obed. This is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,
19and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
20and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
21and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
22and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
