Psalm 40

My Help and My Deliverer
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1I #Ps. 27:14; 37:7 waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and #Ps. 39:12heard my cry.
2He drew me up from #[Jer. 38:6] the pit of destruction,
out of #Ps. 69:2, 14 the miry bog,
and #Ps. 27:5 set my feet upon a rock,
#
Ps. 37:23
making my steps secure.
3He put #See Ps. 33:3 a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will #Ps. 52:6; 64:8, 9; Deut. 13:11see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.
4Blessed is the man who #See Ps. 2:12 makes
the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who #Ps. 101:3; 125:5; Lev. 19:4; Deut. 29:18; Job 23:11; Hos. 3:1go astray after a lie!
5You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your #Ps. 9:1; Ex. 15:11 wondrous deeds and your #Ps. 92:5; 139:17; Isa. 55:8 thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are #Ps. 71:15; 139:18more than can be told.
6 #
Ps. 51:16; 1 Sam. 15:22; Cited Heb. 10:5-7; See Prov. 21:3 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open #See Job 33:16ear.#40:6 Hebrew ears you have dug for me
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required.
7Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written #Luke 24:44of me:

Ps. 119:16, 24, 35, 92; [John 4:34] I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is #See Ps. 37:31within my heart.”
9I have told the glad news of deliverance#40:9 Hebrew righteousness; also verse 10
in #See Ps. 22:25 the great congregation;
behold, I have not #Ps. 119:13; [Acts 20:20, 27] restrained my lips,

as you know, O Lord.
10I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.
11As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
your mercy from me;
your #Ps. 57:3; 61:7; Prov. 20:28; See Ps. 36:5steadfast love and your faithfulness will
ever preserve me!
12For evils have #Ps. 116:3 encompassed me
beyond number;
my #Ps. 38:4 iniquities have overtaken me,
and I cannot #[Ps. 38:10] see;
they are #Ps. 69:4 more than the hairs of my head;
my heart #Ps. 73:26fails me.
13 # For ver. 13-17, see Ps. 70:1-5 Be pleased, O Lord, to #Ps. 22:20 deliver me!
O Lord, #Ps. 22:19; 38:22; 71:12; 141:1make haste to help me!
14 #
Ps. 35:4, 26; 71:13 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be #Ps. 6:10turned back and brought to dishonor
who delight in my hurt!
15Let those be appalled because of their shame
who #Ps. 35:21, 25; 70:3say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
16But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
#
Ps. 35:27
say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17As for me, I am #Ps. 86:1; 109:22 poor and needy,
but #[1 Pet. 5:7]the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
do not delay, O my God!

PSALM 40.
1Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.
2Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.
3The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.
4The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.
5I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.
6My enemies have spoken evils against me: when shall he die and his name perish?
7And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: his heart gathered together iniquity to itself. He went out and spoke to the same purpose.
8All my enemies whispered together against me: they devised evils to me.
9They determined against me an unjust word: shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?
10For even the man of peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.
11But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: and I will requite them.
12By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me: because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.
13But thou hast upheld me by reason of my innocence: and hast established me in thy sight for ever.
14Blessed by the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. So be it. So be it.
