Psalm 22
22
Why Have You Forsaken Me?
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.
1 # Cited Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so #ver. 11 far from saving me, from the words of my #Ps. 32:3; 38:8; Job 3:24; Isa. 59:11; [Heb. 5:7]groaning?
2O my God, I cry by #Ps. 88:1day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3Yet you are #Lev. 19:2 holy,
# [Ps. 80:1; 99:1] enthroned on #[Ps. 9:11, 14; 65:1; 102:21; 147:12]the praises#22:3 Or dwelling in the praises of Israel.
4In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5To you they #See Judg. 3:9 cried and were rescued;
in you they #Ps. 25:2; 31:1; 71:1; Isa. 49:23; Rom. 9:33trusted and were not put to shame.
6But I am #Job 25:6; Isa. 41:14 a worm and not a man,
#
Ps. 69:19; 109:25 scorned by mankind and #Isa. 49:7; 53:3despised by the people.
7All who see me #See Matt. 27:39-43; Mark 15:29-32; Luke 23:35, 36 mock me;
they make mouths at me; they #Ps. 109:25; [Ps. 44:14; 2 Kgs. 19:21; Isa. 37:22; Lam. 2:15]wag their heads;
8 # [Ps. 37:5; Prov. 16:3] “He trusts in the Lord; let him #Ps. 91:14 deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he #Ps. 18:19; Matt. 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22delights in him!”
9Yet you are he who #Ps. 71:6took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
10On you was I cast from my birth,
and from #Isa. 46:3; 49:1; Gal. 1:15my mother’s womb you have been my God.
11Be not #See ver. 1; Ps. 10:1 far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is #Ps. 107:12; 2 Kgs. 14:26; Isa. 63:5none to help.
12Many bulls encompass me;
# [Ps. 68:30 (Heb.)] strong bulls of #Amos 4:1Bashan surround me;
13they #Ps. 35:21; Job 16:10; Lam. 2:16; 3:46open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.
14I am #[Lam. 2:11] poured out like water,
and all my bones are #[Dan. 5:6] out of joint;
my #[Job 23:16; Nah. 2:10]; See Josh. 2:11 heart is like #See Ps. 68:2wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15my strength is #Prov. 17:22 dried up like a potsherd,
and my #[John 19:28; See Job 29:10]tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
16For #[Phil. 3:2; Rev. 22:15] dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers #Ps. 88:17 encircles me;
they have #Matt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:33; 24:40; John 19:23, 37; 20:25; [Zech. 12:10]pierced my hands and feet#22:16 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac; most Hebrew manuscripts like a lion [they are at] my hands and feet—
17I can count all my bones—
they #Luke 23:35stare and gloat over me;
18 # Cited John 19:24; [Matt. 27:35; Luke 23:34] they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
19But you, O Lord, #[See ver. 11 above] do not be far off!
O you my help, #Ps. 38:22come quickly to my aid!
20Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of #[Phil. 3:2; Rev. 22:15]the dog!
21Save me from #2 Tim. 4:17 the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued#22:21 Hebrew answered me from the horns of #See Num. 23:22the wild oxen!
22 # Cited Heb. 2:12; [Ps. 102:21; John 17:6] I will tell of your name to my #Matt. 28:10; John 20:17; Rom. 8:29brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23You who #Ps. 135:20 fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, #Ps. 50:15, 23glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of #[Isa. 53:4, 7] the afflicted,
and he has not #Ps. 10:1; 13:1; See Job 13:24 hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he #Heb. 5:7cried to him.
25From you comes my praise in the great #Ps. 35:18; 40:9, 10; 111:1 congregation;
my #Lev. 7:16 vows I will #Ps. 66:13; Jonah 2:9; See Ps. 50:14perform before those who fear him.
26 #
Ps. 69:32 The afflicted#22:26 Or The meek shall #Isa. 25:6; 65:13 eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts #John 6:51live forever!
27All #Ps. 2:8; 67:7 the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all #Ps. 96:7the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28For #Obad. 21; [Ps. 47:8; Zech. 14:9]kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.
29All #[Ps. 45:12] the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall #Ps. 72:9; [Phil. 2:10] bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not #Ezek. 18:27keep himself alive.
30Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming #Ps. 48:13; 71:18generation;
31they shall #Ps. 86:9; [Isa. 60:3] come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet #Ps. 78:6; 102:18unborn,
that he has done it.

1My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
Why are You so far from deliveringme,
and from my roaring words of distress?
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not answer;
and at night, but I have no rest.

they trusted in You and were not put to shame.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 But I am a worm, and not a man;
a reproach of men and despised by the people.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 All who see me laugh me to scorn;
they sneer with the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 “Trust in the Lord,
let Him deliver him;
let Him rescue him,
seeing He delights in him.”
9#Ps 38:6; 18:2 But You are He who took me out of the womb;
You caused me to trust
while I was on my mother’s breasts.
10#Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17 I was cast on You from birth;
You are my God from my mother’s womb.
11#Ps 42:5; 43:5 Be not far from me
for trouble is near,
for there is none to help.
12Many bulls encircle me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me.
13They open their mouths against me,
as a preying and roaring lion.
14I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted inside my body.
15My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
and You have set me toward the dust of death.
16For dogs have encompassed me;
the assembly of the wicked has enclosed me;
like a lion they pin my hands and my feet;
17I can count all my bones;
they look and stare on me.
18They part my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothes.
19But do not be far from me, O Lord;
O my Help, hasten to my aid.
20Rescue my soul from the sword,
my only life from the power of the dog.
21Save me from the lion’s mouth,
and from the horns of the wild ox, answer me!
22I will declare Your name to my community;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise You.
23You who fear the Lord, praise Him;
all you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,
and stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel.
24For He has not despised nor abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted;
nor has He hid His face from him;
but when he cried to Him, He heard.
25From You my praise will be in the great congregation;
I will pay my vows before those who fear Him.
26The meek will eat and be satisfied;
those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
May your hearts live forever.
27All the ends of the world
will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
will worship before You.
28For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and He rules among the nations.
29All the prosperous ones of the earth will eat and worship;
all who go down to the dust will bow before Him,
even he who cannot keep his own soul alive.
30Posterity will serve Him;
it will be told to generations about the Lord;
31they will come and declare His righteousness
to a people yet to be born,
that He has acted.
