Psalm 19

The Law of the Lord Is Perfect
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1 #
Ps. 50:6; [Rom. 1:19, 20] The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above#19:1 Hebrew the expanse; compare Genesis 1:6–8 proclaims his handiwork.
2Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
3There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
4 # Cited Rom. 10:18 Their #[Isa. 28:10] voice#19:4 Or Their measuring line goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for #[Eccles. 1:5]the sun,
5 # [Judg. 5:31] which comes out like #Joel 2:16a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
6Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 #
Rom. 7:12 The law of the Lord is perfect,#19:7 Or blameless
#
Ps. 23:3; [2 Tim. 3:16] reviving the soul;
#
Ex. 25:16; See Ps. 78:5 the testimony of the Lord is #Ps. 111:7 sure,
# [Matt. 11:25; 1 Cor. 1:27; 2 Tim. 3:15] making wise #Ps. 119:130; Prov. 1:4the simple;
8 #
Ps. 103:18; 111:7; 119:4, 27 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is #[Ps. 12:6] pure,
# See Ps. 13:3 enlightening the eyes;
9the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules#19:9 Or just decrees of the Lord are #Ps. 119:142, 151, 160true,
and righteous altogether.
10More to be desired are they than #Ps. 119:72, 127; Prov. 8:10 gold,
even much #Job 28:17; Prov. 8:19 fine gold;
#
Ps. 119:103 sweeter also than honey
and drippings of #Prov. 16:24the honeycomb.
11Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
# [Prov. 29:18] in keeping them there is great reward.
12 #
Ps. 40:12; [1 Cor. 4:4] Who can discern his errors?
# [Lev. 4:2; Num. 15:27] Declare me innocent from #Ps. 90:8; See Job 34:32hidden faults.
13 #
Gen. 20:6; 1 Sam. 25:33, 34, 39 Keep back your servant also from #[Num. 15:30] presumptuous sins;
let them not have #Ps. 119:133; Rom. 6:12, 14dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my #See Ps. 18:2 rock and my #See Job 19:25redeemer.

Psalms 19

To the director: A song of David.
1The heavens tell about the glory of God.
The skies announce what his hands have made.
2Each new day tells more of the story,
and each night reveals more and more about God’s power.#19:2 Or “Like the changing of the guards, each day passes the news to the next day and each night passes information to the next night.”
3You cannot hear them say anything.
They don’t make any sound we can hear.
4But their message goes throughout the world.
Their teaching reaches the ends of the earth.
The sun’s tent is set up in the heavens.
5It comes out like a happy bridegroom from his bedroom.
It begins its path across the sky
like an athlete eager to run a race.
6It starts at one end of the sky
and runs all the way to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.
7The Lord’s teachings are perfect.
They give strength to his people.
The Lord’s rules can be trusted.
They help even the foolish become wise.
8The Lord’s laws are right.
They make people happy.
The Lord’s commands are good.
They show people the right way to live.
9Learning respect for the Lord is good.
It will last forever.
The Lord’s judgments are right.
They are completely fair.
10His teachings are worth more than pure gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey dripping from the honeycomb.
11His teachings warn his servants,
and good things come to those who obey them.
12People cannot see their own mistakes,
so don’t let me commit secret sins.
13Don’t let me do what I know is wrong.
Don’t let sin control me.
If you help me, I can be pure
and free from sin.
14May my words and thoughts please you.
Lord, you are my Rock—the one who rescues me.
