Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus
7 # For ver. 7-9, see Matt. 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29 Now #ch. 3:1, 19; Acts 13:1 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that #ver. 19John had been raised from the dead, 8#[See ver. 7 above]by some that Elijah had appeared, and #[See ver. 7 above]by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And #ch. 23:8he sought to see him.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
10On their return #Mark 6:30 the apostles told him all that they had done. #For ver. 10-17, see Matt. 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; John 6:1-13; [Matt. 15:32-38; Mark 8:2-9]And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he #ch. 8:40 welcomed them and #ver. 2spoke to them of the kingdom of God and #ver. 2cured those who had need of healing. 12Now #ch. 24:29 (Gk.); Jer. 6:4 the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, #[Matt. 15:23]“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13But he said to them, #[2 Kgs. 4:42-44] “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than #Matt. 16:9; Mark 8:19five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16And taking the five loaves and the two fish, #Mark 7:34; John 11:41; 17:1 he looked up to heaven and #ch. 24:30; 1 Sam. 9:13; Matt. 26:26; Mark 8:7; 14:22; [1 Cor. 14:16]said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19And they answered, #ver. 7; Matt. 14:2; Mark 6:14 “John the Baptist. But others say, #ver. 8; Mark 6:15; [Matt. 17:10; Mark 9:11; John 1:21]Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, #ch. 23:35; Acts 3:18; Rev. 12:10; See Matt. 1:17“The Christ of God.”
Jesus Foretells His Death

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

The Transfiguration

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
37 # For ver. 37-42, see Matt. 17:14-19; Mark 9:14-28 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for #See ch. 7:12he is my only child. 39And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but #[ver. 1; ch. 10:17; Matt. 10:1; Mark 6:7]they could not.” 41Jesus answered, “O #Phil. 2:15; [John 20:27] faithless and twisted generation, #[John 14:9]how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus #ch. 4:35, 39; Zech. 3:2; Matt. 8:26; Mark 1:25; Jude 9 rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and #See ch. 7:15gave him back to his father. 43And all were astonished at #2 Pet. 1:16 the majesty of God.
Jesus Again Foretells His Death
# For ver. 43-45, see Matt. 17:22, 23; Mark 9:30-32 But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus#9:43 Greek he said #ver. 22to his disciples, 44“Let these words sink into your ears: #[See ver. 43 above]The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45#ch. 2:50; 18:34; Mark 6:52; John 10:6; 12:16; 16:17-19; [Matt. 17:13; Mark 9:10] But they did not understand this saying, and #ch. 18:34; [ch. 24:16]it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Who Is the Greatest?
46 # For ver. 46-48, see Matt. 18:1-5; Mark 9:33-37; [Matt. 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-45] An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48and said to them, #[Matt. 10:40, 42] “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and #[Matt. 10:40, 42] whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For #ch. 22:26he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus
51When the days drew near for #See Mark 16:19 him to be taken up, #2 Kgs. 12:17; Isa. 50:7; Jer. 42:15 he set his face #ch. 13:22; 17:11; 18:31; 19:11, 28to go to Jerusalem. 52And #[ch. 10:1] he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of #See Matt. 10:5the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53But #John 4:9; [ch. 10:33] the people did not receive him, because #John 4:20his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell #See Rev. 13:13fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”#9:54 Some manuscripts add as Elijah did 55But he turned and rebuked them.#9:55 Some manuscripts add And he said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of; 56 for the Son of Man came not to destroy people’s lives but to save them” 56And they went on to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus
57As they were going #ver. 51 along the road, #For ver. 57-60, see Matt. 8:19-22someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60And Jesus#9:60 Greek he said to him, “Leave #[John 5:25] the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and #ver. 2proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, #[1 Kgs. 19:20]but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62Jesus said to him, #[Phil. 3:13]“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
