Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus
7 # For ver. 7-9, see Matt. 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29 Now #ch. 3:1, 19; Acts 13:1 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that #ver. 19John had been raised from the dead, 8#[See ver. 7 above]by some that Elijah had appeared, and #[See ver. 7 above]by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And #ch. 23:8he sought to see him.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
10On their return #Mark 6:30 the apostles told him all that they had done. #For ver. 10-17, see Matt. 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; John 6:1-13; [Matt. 15:32-38; Mark 8:2-9]And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he #ch. 8:40 welcomed them and #ver. 2spoke to them of the kingdom of God and #ver. 2cured those who had need of healing. 12Now #ch. 24:29 (Gk.); Jer. 6:4 the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, #[Matt. 15:23]“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13But he said to them, #[2 Kgs. 4:42-44] “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than #Matt. 16:9; Mark 8:19five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14For there were about five thousand men. Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

Jesus Foretells His Death

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

The Transfiguration

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
37 # For ver. 37-42, see Matt. 17:14-19; Mark 9:14-28 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for #See ch. 7:12he is my only child. 39And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but #[ver. 1; ch. 10:17; Matt. 10:1; Mark 6:7]they could not.” 41Jesus answered, “O #Phil. 2:15; [John 20:27] faithless and twisted generation, #[John 14:9]how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus #ch. 4:35, 39; Zech. 3:2; Matt. 8:26; Mark 1:25; Jude 9 rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and #See ch. 7:15gave him back to his father. 43And all were astonished at #2 Pet. 1:16 the majesty of God.
Jesus Again Foretells His Death

Who Is the Greatest?

For #ch. 22:26he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us

A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus
51When the days drew near for #See Mark 16:19 him to be taken up, #2 Kgs. 12:17; Isa. 50:7; Jer. 42:15 he set his face #ch. 13:22; 17:11; 18:31; 19:11, 28to go to Jerusalem. 52And #[ch. 10:1] he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of #See Matt. 10:5the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53But #John 4:9; [ch. 10:33] the people did not receive him, because #John 4:20his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell #See Rev. 13:13fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”#9:54 Some manuscripts add as Elijah did 55But he turned and rebuked them.#9:55 Some manuscripts add And he said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of; 56 for the Son of Man came not to destroy people’s lives but to save them” 56And they went on to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus

But as for you, go and #ver. 2proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, #[1 Kgs. 19:20]but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62Jesus said to him, #[Phil. 3:13]“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Mt 10:9–15; Mk 6:8–11; Lk 10:4–12; 22:35 he told them, “no staff,#Mk 6:8 no traveling bag, no bread, no money; and don’t take an extra shirt. 4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. 5If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”#Neh 5:13; Ac 13:51; 18:6 6So they went out and traveled from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
Herod’s Desire to See Jesus

Peter’s Confession of the Messiah

34While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed#Lk 1:35; Ac 5:15 them. The Power of Jesus over a Demon
37The next day,#Mt 17:14–18; Mk 9:14–27 when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he’s my only child.#Lk 7:12 39A spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; severely bruising him, it scarcely ever leaves him. 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”#Lk 9:1; 10:17
41Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and perverse#9:41 Or corrupt, or perverted, or twisted; Dt 32:5 generation,#Php 2:15 how long will I be with you and put up with you?#Jn 14:9 Bring your son here.”
42As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy,#Zch 3:2; Mt 8:26; Mk 1:25; Lk 4:35,39; Jd 9 and gave him back to his father.#Lk 7:15 43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.#2Pt 1:16
The Second Prediction of His Death
While everyone was amazed at all the things he was doing,#Mt 17:22–23; Mk 9:30–32 he told his disciples, 44“Let these words sink in:#9:44 Lit “Put these words in your ears The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”#Lk 9:22
45But they did not understand this statement;#Mk 6:52; Lk 2:50; 18:34; 24:25; Jn 10:6; 12:16; 16:17–19 it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it,#Lk 18:34; 24:16 and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Who Is the Greatest?

In His Name

The Journey to Jerusalem

Following Jesus

“Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.”

61Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.”#1Kg 19:20
