Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus
7 # For ver. 7-9, see Matt. 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29 Now #ch. 3:1, 19; Acts 13:1 Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that #ver. 19John had been raised from the dead, 8#[See ver. 7 above]by some that Elijah had appeared, and #[See ver. 7 above]by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And #ch. 23:8he sought to see him.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
10On their return #Mark 6:30 the apostles told him all that they had done. #For ver. 10-17, see Matt. 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; John 6:1-13; [Matt. 15:32-38; Mark 8:2-9]And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he #ch. 8:40 welcomed them and #ver. 2spoke to them of the kingdom of God and #ver. 2cured those who had need of healing. 12Now #ch. 24:29 (Gk.); Jer. 6:4 the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, #[Matt. 15:23]“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13But he said to them, #[2 Kgs. 4:42-44] “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than #Matt. 16:9; Mark 8:19five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16And taking the five loaves and the two fish, #Mark 7:34; John 11:41; 17:1 he looked up to heaven and #ch. 24:30; 1 Sam. 9:13; Matt. 26:26; Mark 8:7; 14:22; [1 Cor. 14:16]said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
18 # For ver. 18-20, see Matt. 16:13-16; Mark 8:27-29 Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19And they answered, #ver. 7; Matt. 14:2; Mark 6:14 “John the Baptist. But others say, #ver. 8; Mark 6:15; [Matt. 17:10; Mark 9:11; John 1:21]Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, #ch. 23:35; Acts 3:18; Rev. 12:10; See Matt. 1:17“The Christ of God.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus
23And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him #[2 Tim. 2:12, 13] deny himself and #See Matt. 10:38, 39 take up his cross #1 Cor. 15:31daily and follow me. 24For #[See ver. 23 above]whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25#[ch. 12:20]For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26For #Rom. 1:16; 2 Tim. 1:8, 12, 16; Heb. 11:16; 1 John 2:28; [Matt. 10:33] whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed #Dan. 7:10, 13; Zech. 14:5; Matt. 24:30; 25:31; 26:64; John 1:51; Acts 1:11; 1 Thess. 1:10; 4:16; Jude 14; Rev. 1:7; [Deut. 33:2] when he comes in #Matt. 19:28; 25:31; Mark 10:37; John 17:24 his glory and the glory of the Father and of #Acts 10:22; Rev. 14:10; [Matt. 13:41; 16:27]the holy angels. 27But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not #John 8:52; Heb. 2:9 taste death #[ch. 21:31, 32; Matt. 10:23; 23:36; 24:34; Mark 13:30]until they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration
28 # For ver. 28-36, see Matt. 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him #ch. 8:51; Mark 14:33 Peter and John and James and #See Matt. 14:23went up on the mountain to pray. 29And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was #Mark 16:12 (Gk.) altered, and #Dan. 7:9; [Ps. 104:2; Matt. 28:3]his clothing became dazzling white. 30And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,#9:31 Greek exodus which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32Now Peter and those who were with him #Dan. 8:18; Matt. 26:43 were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake #See John 1:14they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three #[Neh. 8:15] tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—#[Mark 9:6; 14:40]not knowing what he said. 34As he was saying these things, #2 Pet. 1:17; [Ex. 24:15, 16]a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35And #[See ver. 34 above] a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, #ch. 23:35; Isa. 42:1; [Ps. 89:3; Isa. 49:7] my Chosen One;#9:35 Some manuscripts my Beloved #Acts 3:22listen to him!” 36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. #Matt. 17:9; Mark 9:9, 10And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
37 # For ver. 37-42, see Matt. 17:14-19; Mark 9:14-28 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for #See ch. 7:12he is my only child. 39And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but #[ver. 1; ch. 10:17; Matt. 10:1; Mark 6:7]they could not.” 41Jesus answered, “O #Phil. 2:15; [John 20:27] faithless and twisted generation, #[John 14:9]how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus #ch. 4:35, 39; Zech. 3:2; Matt. 8:26; Mark 1:25; Jude 9 rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and #See ch. 7:15gave him back to his father. 43And all were astonished at #2 Pet. 1:16 the majesty of God.

And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Who Is the Greatest?
46 # For ver. 46-48, see Matt. 18:1-5; Mark 9:33-37; [Matt. 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-45] An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48and said to them, #[Matt. 10:40, 42] “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and #[Matt. 10:40, 42] whoever receives me receives him who sent me. The Cost of Following Jesus

Jesus Sends Out the Apostles
1Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He gave them power to heal sicknesses and power over all demons. 2Jesus sent the apostles out to tell about God’s kingdom and to heal the sick. 3He said to them, “When you travel, don’t take a walking stick. Also, don’t carry a bag, or food, or money. Take for your trip only the clothes you are wearing. 4When you go into a house, stay there until it is time to leave. 5If the people in the town will not welcome you, go outside the town and shake the dust off of your feet.# A warning. It showed that they were finished talking to these people. This will be a warning to them.”
6So the apostles went out. They traveled through all the towns. They told the Good News and healed people everywhere.
Herod Is Confused About Jesus
7Herod, the governor, heard about all these things that were happening. He was confused because some people said, “John the Baptist is risen from death.” 8Others said, “Elijah has come to us.” And still others said, “One of the prophets from long ago has risen from death.” 9Herod said, “I cut off John’s head. So who is this man I hear these things about?” And Herod kept trying to see Jesus.
More Than 5,000 People Fed
10When the apostles returned, they told Jesus all the things they had done on their trip. Then Jesus took them away to a town called Bethsaida. There, Jesus and his apostles could be alone together. 11But the people learned where Jesus went and followed him. Jesus welcomed them and talked with them about God’s kingdom. He healed those who needed to be healed.
12Late in the afternoon, the 12 apostles came to Jesus and said, “No one lives in this place. Send the people away. They need to find food and places to sleep in the towns and countryside around here.”
13But Jesus said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
They said, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. Do you want us to go buy food for all these people?” 14(There were about 5,000 men there.)
Jesus said to his followers, “Tell the people to sit in groups of about 50 people.”
15So the followers did this, and all the people sat down. 16Then Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up to heaven and thanked God for the food. Then Jesus divided the food and gave it to the followers to give to the people. 17All the people ate and were satisfied. And there was much food left. Twelve baskets were filled with pieces of food that were not eaten.
Jesus Is the Christ
18One time when Jesus was praying alone, his followers came together there. Jesus asked them, “Who do the people say I am?”
19They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah.# A man who spoke for God. He lived hundreds of years before Christ. And others say you are one of the prophets from long ago who has come back to life.”
20Then Jesus asked, “And who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Christ from God.”
21Jesus warned them not to tell anyone. Then he said, 22“The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law. The Son of Man will be killed. But after three days he will be raised from death.”
23Jesus went on to say to all of them, “If anyone wants to follow me, he must say ‘no’ to the things he wants. Every day he must be willing even to die on a cross, and he must follow me. 24Whoever wants to save his life will lose it. And whoever gives his life for me will save it. 25It is worth nothing for a man to have the whole world, if he himself is destroyed or lost. 26If anyone is ashamed of me and my teaching, then I# Literally, “the Son of Man.” will be ashamed of him. I will be ashamed of him at the time I come with my glory and with the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 27I tell you the truth. Some of you people standing here will see the kingdom of God before you die.”
Jesus with Moses and Elijah
28About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, James, and John and went up on a mountain to pray. 29While Jesus was praying, his face was changed, and his clothes became shining white. 30Then two men were talking with Jesus. The men were Moses and Elijah.# Two of the most important Jewish leaders in the past. 31They appeared in heavenly glory, talking with Jesus about his death which would happen in Jerusalem. 32Peter and the others were asleep. But they woke up and saw the glory of Jesus. They also saw the two men who were standing with him. 33When Moses and Elijah were about to leave, Peter said, “Master, it is good that we are here. We will put three tents here—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Peter did not know what he was saying.)
34While Peter was saying these things, a cloud came down all around them. Peter, James, and John became afraid when the cloud covered them. 35A voice came from the cloud. The voice said, “This is my Son. He is the One I have chosen. Obey him.”
36When the voice finished speaking, only Jesus was there. Peter, James, and John said nothing. At that time they told no one about what they had seen.
Jesus Heals a Sick Boy
37The next day, Jesus, Peter, James, and John came down from the mountain. A large crowd met Jesus. 38A man in the crowd shouted to Jesus, “Teacher, please come and look at my son. He is the only child I have. 39An evil spirit comes into my son, and then he shouts. He loses control of himself, and he foams at the mouth. The evil spirit keeps on hurting him and almost never leaves him. 40I begged your followers to make the evil spirit leave my son, but they could not do it.”
41Jesus answered, “You people who live now have no faith. Your lives are all wrong. How long must I be with you and be patient with you?” Then Jesus said to the man, “Bring your son here.”
42While the boy was coming, the demon threw him on the ground. The boy lost control of himself. But Jesus gave a strong command to the evil spirit. Then the boy was healed, and Jesus gave him back to his father. 43All the people were amazed at the great power of God.
Jesus Talks About His Death
The people were all wondering about the things Jesus did. But he said to his followers, 44“Don’t forget the things I tell you now: The Son of Man will be handed over into the control of men.” 45But the followers did not understand what Jesus meant. The meaning was hidden from them so that they could not understand it. But they were afraid to ask Jesus about what he said.
The Most Important Person
46Jesus’ followers began to have an argument about which one of them was the greatest. 47Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he took a little child and stood the child beside him. 48Then Jesus said, “If anyone accepts a little child like this in my name, then he accepts me. And when he accepts me, he accepts the One who sent me. He who is least among you all—he is the greatest.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us
49John answered, “Master, we saw someone using your name to force demons out of people. We told him to stop because he does not belong to our group.”
50Jesus said to him, “Don’t stop him. If a person is not against you, then he is for you.”
A Samaritan Town
51The time was coming near when Jesus would leave and be taken to heaven. He was determined to go to Jerusalem 52and sent some men ahead of him. The men went into a town in Samaria to make everything ready for Jesus. 53But the people there would not welcome him because he was going toward Jerusalem. 54James and John, the followers of Jesus, saw this. They said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven and destroy those people?”# Some Greek copies add: “. . . as Elijah did.”
55But Jesus turned and scolded them. [And Jesus said, “You don’t know what kind of spirit you belong to. 56The Son of Man did not come to destroy the souls of men but to save them.”]# Some Greek copies do not contain the bracketed text. Then he and his followers went to another town.
Following Jesus
57They were all going along the road. Someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you any place you go.”
58Jesus answered, “The foxes have holes to live in. The birds have nests to live in. But the Son of Man has no place to rest his head.”
59Jesus said to another man, “Follow me!”
But the man said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60But Jesus said to him, “Let the people who are dead bury their own dead! You must go and tell about the kingdom of God.”
61Another man said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to my family.”
62Jesus said, “Anyone who begins to plow a field but keeps looking back is of no use in the kingdom of God.”
