Jesus Calls the First Disciples
1On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by #Num. 34:11; Deut. 3:17; Josh. 12:3; John 6:1; [Matt. 14:34]the lake of Gennesaret, 2#For ver. 2-11, [Matt. 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20; John 1:40-42] and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were #[Mark 1:19]washing their nets. 3Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And #[Matt. 5:1]he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, #[John 21:6]“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5And Simon answered, “Master, #[John 21:3]we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6And when they had done this, #[John 21:11]they enclosed a large number of fish, and #[John 21:11]their nets were breaking. 7They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. #See John 21:4-8And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, #See Matt. 8:34 “Depart from me, for #Isa. 6:5I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”#5:10 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women 11And when they had brought their boats to land, #ch. 18:28; Matt. 19:27; [ver. 28]they left everything and followed him.

If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37And no one puts new wine into old #Josh. 9:4wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”#5:39 Some manuscripts better
