The Resurrection
1 # For ver. 1-10, see Matt. 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; John 20:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, #ch. 23:56taking the spices they had prepared. 2And they found #Matt. 27:60; Mark 15:46; [John 11]the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were perplexed about this, behold, #John 20:12 two #[Acts 1:10; 10:30]men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5And as they were #ver. 37frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, #ch. 9:22, 44; Matt. 17:22, 23; Mark 9:30, 31; [ver. 44]while he was still in Galilee, 7#[See ver. 6 above] that the Son of Man #See ch. 13:33 must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and #See Matt. 20:19 be crucified and on #See ch. 9:22the third day rise.” 8And #John 2:22; 12:1they remembered his words, 9and returning from the tomb they #[John 20:18]told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now it was #Matt. 27:56; Mark 15:40, 41 Mary Magdalene and #ch. 8:3Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and #Mark 16:11; See Mark 16:16they did not believe them. 12But #John 20:3-6 Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw #John 19:40the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13That very day #Mark 16:12two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles#24:13 Greek sixty stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters from Jerusalem, 14and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16#John 20:14; 21:4; [ver. 31; ch. 9:45; 18:34]But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was #See Matt. 21:11 a prophet #Acts 2:22; [Acts 7:22]mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and #Acts 2:23; 5:30; 13:27, 28; 1 Thess. 2:15 how our chief priests and #ch. 23:13, 35; John 3:1; 7:26, 48; 12:42; Acts 3:17; 4:5, 8; 13:27; [1 Cor. 2:8]rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was #See ch. 1:68; 1 Pet. 1:18 the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now #ver. 7the third day since these things happened. 22Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. #ver. 1They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23and #ver. 3 when they did not find his body, they came back saying that #ver. 4, 5, 9they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24#ver. 12; John 20:3Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26#ver. 7, 44, 46; Heb. 2:10; 12:2; 1 Pet. 1:11; See Acts 3:18 Was it not necessary that #See Matt. 1:17 the Christ should suffer these things and enter into #See ch. 9:26his glory?” 27And #Acts 8:35 beginning with #Gen. 3:15; 12:3; 22:18; Num. 21:9; 24:17; [John 1:45; 5:46] Moses and #2 Sam. 7:12-16; Isa. 7:14; 9:6; 50:6; 52:13–53:12; 61:1; Jer. 23:5, 6; Dan. 7:13, 14; 9:24-27; Mic. 5:2; Zech. 6:12; 9:9; 12:10; 13:7; [Acts 13:27]all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
28So they drew near to the village to which they were going. #[Mark 6:48]He acted as if he were going farther, 29but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and #ch. 9:12 (Gk.)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at table with them, he took the bread and #See Matt. 14:19blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31#[ver. 16] And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And #[ch. 4:30]he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, #Ps. 39:3 “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he #ver. 45opened to us the Scriptures?” 33And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they #Mark 16:13; Acts 17:3 found the eleven and #[Acts 1:14]those who were with them gathered together, 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and #1 Cor. 15:5has appeared to Simon!” 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and #ver. 30, 31 how he was known to them in #See Acts 2:42the breaking of the bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36As they were talking about these things, #Mark 16:14; John 20:19Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37But they were #ch. 21:9 startled and #ver. 5 frightened and #[Matt. 14:26; Mark 6:49]thought they saw a spirit. 38And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. #1 John 1:1; [John 20:27]Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40And when he had said this, #John 20:20he showed them his hands and his feet. 41And while they still disbelieved #Acts 12:14; [Gen. 45:26] for joy and were marveling, #John 21:5he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,#24:42 Some manuscripts add and some honeycomb 43and he took it and ate before them.
44Then he said to them, #See ver. 6 “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, #See ver. 27that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then #ver. 32; [Job 33:16; Ps. 119:18; Acts 16:14; 1 John 5:20]he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, “Thus #See Matt. 26:24 it is written, #See ver. 7, 26 that the Christ should suffer and on the third day #John 20:9rise from the dead, 47and that #Acts 5:31; See Acts 2:38 repentance for#24:47 Some manuscripts and the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed #See Acts 4:12 in his name #ch. 2:32; Gen. 12:3; Ps. 22:27; Isa. 2:2; 49:6; Hos. 2:23; Mal. 1:11; Matt. 28:19 to all nations, #Acts 10:37; Gal. 3:8beginning from Jerusalem. 48#Acts 1:8, 22; 2:32; 3:15; 5:32; 10:39, 41; 13:31; 1 Pet. 5:1; [John 15:27; 1 Cor. 15:15]You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending #John 14:26; Acts 1:4; [Acts 2:33; Eph. 1:13]; See Acts 2:16, 17 the promise of my Father upon you. The Resurrection
1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared [to finish anointing the body]. [Matt 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; John 20:1-8] 2And they found the [large, circular] stone rolled back from the tomb, 3but when they went inside, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were perplexed and wondering about this, suddenly, two men in dazzling clothing stood near them; 5and as the women were terrified and were bowing their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why are you looking for the living One among the dead? 6He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, 7saying that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise [from death to life].” [Ps 16:10] 8And they remembered His words, 9and after returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven [apostles] and to all the rest. 10Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna [the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward] and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. 11But their report seemed to them like idle talk and nonsense, and they would not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping [at the small entrance] and looking in, he saw only the linen #24:12 See note John 20:5.wrappings; and he went away, wondering about what had happened. [John 20:3-6]
The Road to Emmaus
13And then, that very day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about #24:13 Lit sixty stadia, a Roman measurement.seven miles from Jerusalem. [Mark 16:12] 14And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15While they were talking and discussing it, Jesus Himself came up and began walking with them. 16But their eyes were [miraculously] prevented from recognizing Him. 17Then Jesus asked them, “What are you discussing with one another as you walk along?” And they stood still, looking brokenhearted. 18One of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, “Are you the only stranger visiting Jerusalem who is unaware of the things which have happened here in these [recent] days?” 19He asked, “What things?” And they replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20and how the chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him. 21But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel and set our nation free. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22And also some of the women among us shocked us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23and they did not find His body. Then they came back, saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive! 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women had said, but they did not see Him.” 25Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart to trust and believe in everything that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and [only then to] enter His glory?” 27Then beginning with Moses and [throughout] all the [writings of the] prophets, He explained and interpreted for them the things referring to Himself [found] in all the Scriptures.
28Then they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as if He were going farther. 29But they urged Him [not to go on], saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening, and the day has just about ended.” So He went inside to stay with them. 30And it happened that as He reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31Then their eyes were [suddenly] opened [by God] and they [clearly] recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and opening the Scriptures to us?” 33They got up that very hour and went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven [apostles] gathered together and those who were with them, 34saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon [Peter]!” 35They began describing in detail what had happened on the road, and how Jesus was recognized by them when He broke the bread.
Other Appearances
36While they were talking about this, Jesus Himself [suddenly] stood among them and said to them, “Peace be to you.” 37But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a spirit. 38And He said, “Why are you troubled, and why are doubts rising in your hearts? 39Look at [the marks in] My hands and My feet, [and see] that it is I Myself. Touch Me and see; a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.” [John 20:20-27] 40After saying this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41While they still did not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42They gave Him a piece of broiled fish, 43and He took it and ate it in front of them. [Acts 10:40, 41]
44Then He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you, everything which has been written about Me in the #24:44 I.e. the entire Old Testament.Law of Moses and the [writings of the] Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then He opened their minds to [help them] understand the Scriptures, 46and said, “And so it is written, that the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, [Hos 6:2] 47and that repentance [necessary] for forgiveness of sins would be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit]upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high.” [John 14:26; Acts 1:4]
The Ascension
50Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifted up His hands and blessed them. [Matt 21:17; Acts 1:9-12] 51While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up into heaven. 52And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy [fully understanding that He lives and that He is the Son of God]; 53and they were continually in the temple blessing and praising God.
