Matt. 27:2; Mark 15:1; John 18:28 Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man #ver. 14; [Acts 17:6, 7; 24:5] misleading our nation and #[ch. 20:25] forbidding us to give tribute to #ch. 2:1; 3:1 Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, #John 18:33, 36, 37; 19:12; [Acts 17:7]a king.” 3#Matt. 27:11; Mark 15:2 And Pilate asked him, #ver. 37, 38; Matt. 2:2; John 18:39; 19:3 “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, #See ch. 22:70“You have said so.” 4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, #ver. 14, 22; John 18:38; 19:4, 6; [Matt. 27:24; 1 Pet. 2:22]“I find no guilt in this man.” 5But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, #ch. 4:14; Matt. 4:12, 23; Mark 1:14; John 1:43; 2:11from Galilee even to this place.”
Jesus Before Herod
6When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he learned that he belonged to #See ch. 3:1Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, #ch. 9:9 for he had long desired to see him, #Matt. 14:1; Mark 6:14 because he had heard about him, and he was hoping #See Matt. 12:38to see some sign done by him. 9So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11And Herod with his soldiers #Mark 9:12; Acts 4:11 treated him with contempt and #ch. 18:32 mocked him. Then, #[Matt. 27:28; Mark 15:17]arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12And #Acts 4:27; [Ps. 2:2]Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.
13Pilate then called together the chief priests and #See ch. 24:20the rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought me this man #ver. 2 as one who was misleading the people. And #Acts 3:13 after examining him before you, behold, I #ver. 4did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15Neither did Herod, for #ver. 11he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16#ver. 22; John 19:1; [Acts 5:40]I will therefore punish and release him.”#23:16 Here, or after verse 19, some manuscripts add verse 17: Now he was obliged to release one man to them at the festival
Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
18 # For ver. 18-25, see Matt. 27:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; John 18:39, 40; 19:16 But they all cried out together, #[Acts 21:36; 22:22]“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and #Acts 3:14for murder. 20Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22A third time he said to them, “Why? #[ver. 41; John 8:46] What evil has he done? #ver. 14, 15 I have found in him no guilt deserving death. #ver. 16I will therefore punish and release him.” 23But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison #ver. 19 for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, #John 19:16but he delivered Jesus over to their will.
The Crucifixion

Matt. 27:32; Mark 15:21; [John 19:17] And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. 27And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were #ch. 8:52; Matt. 11:17mourning and lamenting for him. 28But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For behold, #See ch. 17:22 the days are coming when they will say, #ch. 21:23; Matt. 24:19; Mark 13:17‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30#Hos. 10:8; Rev. 6:16; [Isa. 2:19]Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31For #[Prov. 11:31; 1 Pet. 4:17] if they do these things when #Ezek. 20:47the wood is green, what will happen #Ezek. 20:47when it is dry?”

The Death of Jesus

50 # For ver. 50-56, see Matt. 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; John 19:38-42 Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51who had not consented to their decision and action; and he #ch. 2:25, 38was looking for the kingdom of God. 52This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and #[Isa. 53:9] laid him in a tomb cut in stone, #[Mark 11:2]where no one had ever yet been laid. 54It was the day of #See Matt. 27:62Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.#23:54 Greek was dawning 55#Matt. 28:1 The women #ver. 49who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56Then they returned and #ch. 24:1; Mark 16:1; [John 19:39] prepared spices and ointments.

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate
1Then #Matt. 27:2; Mark 15:1; Luke 18:32; John 18:28the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to #Luke 3:1; 13:1Pilate. 2And they began to #Acts 24:2accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow #Acts 17:7perverting the nation, and #Matt. 17:27; Mark 12:17forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying #John 19:12that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
3#Matt. 27:11; 1 Tim. 6:13Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
4So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, #Matt. 27:19; (1 Pet. 2:22)“I find no fault in this Man.”
5But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from #John 7:41Galilee to this place.”
Jesus Faces Herod
6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7And as soon as he knew that He belonged to #Matt. 14:1; Mark 6:14; Luke 3:1; 9:7; 13:31Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8Now when Herod saw Jesus, #Luke 9:9he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because #Matt. 14:1; Mark 6:14he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him #Is. 53:7; Matt. 27:12, 14; Mark 15:5; John 19:9nothing. 10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11#Is. 53:3Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12That very day #Acts 4:26, 27Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Taking the Place of Barabbas
13#Matt. 27:23; Mark 15:14; John 18:38Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14said to them, #Luke 23:1, 2“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, #Luke 23:4having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16#Matt. 27:26; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:22; John 19:1; Acts 16:37I will therefore chastise Him and release Him” 17#Matt. 27:15; Mark 15:6; John 18:39(for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).
18And #Is. 53:3; Acts 3:13–15they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.
20Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
22Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
23But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. 24So #Matt. 27:26; Mark 15:15; John 19:16Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25#Is. 53:8And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
The King on a Cross
26#Matt. 27:32; Mark 15:21; John 19:17Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
27And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29#Matt. 24:19; Luke 21:23For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30Then they will begin #Is. 2:19; Hos. 10:8; Rev. 6:16, 17; 9:6‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31#(Prov. 11:31; Jer. 25:29); Ezek. 20:47; 21:3, 4; 1 Pet. 4:17For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”
32#Is. 53:9, 12; Matt. 27:38; Mark 15:27; John 19:18There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33And #Ps. 22:16–18; Matt. 27:33–44; Mark 15:22–32; John 19:17–24when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34Then Jesus said, “Father, #Ps. 109:4; (Matt. 5:44); Acts 7:60; 1 Cor. 4:12forgive them, for #Acts 3:17they do not know what they do.”
And #Ps. 22:18; Matt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; John 19:23they divided His garments and cast lots. 35And #Ps. 22:17; (Zech. 12:10)the people stood looking on. But even the #Ps. 22:8; Matt. 27:39; Mark 15:29rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
36The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him #Ps. 69:21sour wine, 37and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
38#Matt. 27:37; Mark 15:26; John 19:19And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39#Matt. 27:44; Mark 15:32Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done #(2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 7:26; 1 Pet. 2:21–24)nothing wrong.” 42Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in #(2 Cor. 12:4; Eph. 4:8–10; Rev. 2:7)Paradise.”
Jesus Dies on the Cross
44#Amos 8:9; Matt. 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45Then the sun was darkened, and #Ex. 26:31–33; Zech. 11:10; Matt. 27:51; Mark 15:38; (Heb. 9:3; 10:19, 20)the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, #Ps. 31:5; 1 Pet. 2:23‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” #Dan. 9:26; Zech. 11:10, 11; Matt. 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 9:22; 18:33; John 19:30Having said this, He breathed His last.
47#Matt. 27:54; Mark 15:39So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
48And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49#Ps. 38:11; Matt. 27:55; Mark 15:40; John 16:20–22; 19:25But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb
50#Matt. 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; John 19:38–42Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, #Mark 15:43; Luke 2:25, 38who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53#Is. 53:9; Matt. 27:59; Mark 15:46Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54That day was #Matt. 27:62; Mark 15:42the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55And the women #Luke 8:2who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and #Mark 15:47they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56Then they returned and #Mark 16:1; Luke 24:1prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath #Ex. 20:10; Deut. 5:14according to the commandment.
