Jonah’s Prayer
1Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, 2saying,
#
Ps. 3:4; 120:1; Lam. 3:55 “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
#
Ps. 118:5 out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
#
Lam. 3:56
and you heard my voice.
3 #
Ps. 88:6, 7 For you cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me;
#
Ps. 42:7
all your waves and your billows
passed over me.
4 #
Ps. 31:22 Then I said, ‘I am driven away
from your sight;
# [1 Kgs. 8:35, 38] yet I shall again look
upon your holy temple.’
5 # [Lam. 3:54] The waters closed in over me #Ps. 69:1to take my life;
the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped about my head
6at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
whose bars closed upon me forever;
yet you brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord my God.
7When my life was fainting away,
I remembered the Lord,
# [2 Chr. 30:27] and my prayer came to you,
into your holy temple.
8 #
Ps. 31:6; [2 Kgs. 17:15; Jer. 2:5] Those who pay regard to vain idols
# [Jer. 2:13] forsake their hope of steadfast love.
9 #
Ps. 50:14; [Hos. 14:2; Heb. 13:15] But I with the voice of thanksgiving
will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
#
Ps. 3:8
Salvation belongs to the Lord!”
10And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

Jonah 2

1Then Jonah prayed#2:1. It is significant that Jonah is not recorded as praying until this point in the story. to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish. 2He began, “In my agony I cried out to the Lord and he answered me; from the depths of Sheol#2:2. Sheol: the place of the dead. I pleaded for help and you answered me. 3You threw me into the deep, all the way down to the bottom of the sea.#2:3. Literally, “the heart of the sea.” Water flooded all around me; your crashing waves rolled over me. 4I said to myself, ‘The Lord has banished me from his sight. Will I ever see your holy Temple again?’#2:4. Or “but even so I will see your holy Temple again.” 5The water swirled over me so I couldn't breathe; the deep sucked me down; seaweed wrapped itself around my head. 6I sank down to the base of the mountains; the earth barred me in forever. But you, my Lord, my God, brought me back up from the abyss.
7As my life ebbed away, I remembered the Lord; my prayer came to you in your holy Temple. 8Those who worship worthless idols give up their trust in God's goodness. 9But I will offer you sacrifices, shouting out my thanks. I will keep my promises to you, for salvation comes from the Lord.”
10Then the Lord told the fish to spit out Jonah onto the shore.
