Job 2

Satan Attacks Job’s Health
1Again #ch. 1:6there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. 2And the Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 3And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still #ver. 9; [ch. 27:5, 6] holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him #ch. 9:17without reason.” 4Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. 5But #ch. 1:11 stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will #ch. 1:5curse you to your face.” 6And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”
7So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome #Ex. 9:9; Lev. 13:18; [Deut. 28:27] sores from #Deut. 28:35; Isa. 1:6the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8And he took #ch. 41:30 a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in #ch. 42:6; Ezek. 27:30; Jonah 3:6; Matt. 11:21the ashes.
9Then his wife said to him, “Do you still #ver. 3 hold fast your integrity? #[See ver. 5 above]Curse God and die.” 10But he said to her, “You speak as one of the #[Ps. 74:18, 22] foolish women would speak. #[James 5:10, 11] Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”#2:10 Or disaster; also verse 11 #ch. 1:22 In all this Job did not #[Ps. 39:1]sin with his lips.
Job’s Three Friends
11Now when Job’s three #[Prov. 17:17] friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz #See 1 Chr. 1:45 the Temanite, Bildad #Gen. 25:2; 1 Chr. 1:32 the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to #ch. 42:11; [Rom. 12:15]show him sympathy and comfort him. 12And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they #See Gen. 37:29 tore their robes and sprinkled #See Josh. 7:6; Neh. 9:1; Lam. 2:10; Ezek. 27:30dust on their heads toward heaven. 13And they sat with him on the ground #Ezek. 3:15; [Gen. 50:10]seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.

Job 2

The Adversary’s Attack on Job’s Person
1And then#Literally “And it came to be,” or “and it happened” one day the sons of God#Or “the heavenly beings,” or “the angels” came to present themselves before Yahweh, and Satan#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” also came into their midst to present himself before Yahweh. 2So#Hebrew “And” Yahweh asked#Literally “said to” Satan,#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” “From where have you come?”
And Satan#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” answered Yahweh and said, “From roaming on the earth and from walking about in it.”
3So#Hebrew “And” Yahweh asked#Literally “said to” Satan,#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” “Have you considered#Literally “set your heart” my servant Job? Indeed,#Or “For” or “Because” there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. And still he persists in his blamelessness even though#Hebrew “and” you incited me against him to destroy him for nothing.”
4Then#Hebrew “And” Satan#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” answered him and said, “Skin for skin! All that that#Literally “the” man has he will give for his life. 5But stretch out#Or “please” your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see whether#Literally “if not” he will curse#Literally “bless”—negative meaning by context you to your face.”#Hebrew “your faces”
6So#Literally “And it happened the/one day” Yahweh said to Satan,#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” “All right,#Literally “Look” he is in your power.#Literally “hand” Only spare his life.”
Job’s Blameless Behavior
7So#Hebrew “And” Satan#Hebrew “the accuser,” or “the adversary” went out from Yahweh’s presence,#Literally “the faces of Yahweh” and he inflicted Job with loathsome skin sores from the sole of his foot up to the crown of his head. 8So#Hebrew “And” he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and he sat in the midst of the ashes.
9Then#Hebrew “And” his wife said to him, “Are you still persisting in your blamelessness? Curse#Literally “Bless”—negative meaning by context God and die.”
10So#Hebrew “And” he said to her, “You speak like one of the foolish women speaks. Indeed, should we receive the good from God, but#Or “and” not receive the evil?” In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.
11Thus#Hebrew “And” Job’s three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So#Hebrew “And” each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met#Or “they agreed” together to come to console him and to comfort him.
12Thus#Hebrew “And” they lifted up their eyes#Or “they gazed” from afar, but#Hebrew “and” they did not recognize him, so#Hebrew “and” they raised their voice, and they wept, and each man tore his outer garment#Or “robe” and threw dust on their heads toward the sky.#Or “in the air”; literally “to the heavens” 13Then#Hebrew “And” they sat with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, but#Hebrew “and” no one spoke#Or “there was no speaking” a word to him because they saw that his#Literally “the” suffering was very great.
