The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
1After this there was a #See ch. 6:4feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is in Jerusalem by #Neh. 3:1, 32; 12:39the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic#5:2 Or Hebrew called Bethesda,#5:2 Some manuscripts Bethsaida which has five roofed colonnades. 3In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and #Matt. 12:10paralyzed.#5:3 Some manuscripts insert, wholly or in part, waiting for the moving of the water; 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had 5One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8Jesus said to him, #Matt. 9:6, 7; Mark 2:9, 11, 12; Luke 5:24, 25“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9#[See ver. 8 above] And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
# ch. 9:14 Now that day was the Sabbath. 10So the Jews#5:10 The Greek word Ioudaioi refers specifically here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, who opposed Jesus in that time; also verses 15, 16, 18 said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and #Ex. 20:10; Neh. 13:19; Jer. 17:21, 22; [ch. 7:23; 9:16; Matt. 12:2; Mark 2:24; 3:4; Luke 6:2; 13:14]it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for #[ch. 6:15]Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! #[ch. 8:11] Sin no more, #[Ezra 9:14]that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16And this was why the Jews #ch. 15:20; [Acts 9:4, 5] were persecuting Jesus, #ch. 7:23; 9:16because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus Is Equal with God
18This was why the Jews #See ch. 7:1 were seeking all the more to kill him, #See ch. 10:33 because not only was he #ver. 16 breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God #[Rom. 8:32] his own Father, #Phil. 2:6making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
19So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, #See ver. 30 the Son #[ch. 16:13]can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father#5:19 Greek he does, that the Son does likewise. 20For #ch. 3:35; 10:17; 15:9, 10; 17:23-26; [Matt. 3:17] the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And #[ch. 14:12] greater works than these will he show him, so that #ch. 7:21you may marvel. 21For as the Father #[Deut. 32:39; 2 Cor. 1:9] raises the dead and #Rom. 4:17; 8:11 gives them life, so #[ch. 6:33; 11:25]; See 1 Cor. 15:45 also the Son gives life #[Rom. 9:18]to whom he will. 22#[Acts 17:31] For the Father judges no one, but #ver. 27; ch. 9:39; Acts 10:42; [ch. 3:17]; See ch. 17:2has given all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son, just as they #ch. 8:49 honor the Father. #Luke 10:16; [ch. 15:23; 1 John 2:23]Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, #[ch. 8:51] whoever hears my word and #ch. 20:31; 1 John 5:9-13; [ch. 3:15, 36; 12:44] believes him who sent me has eternal life. He #ch. 3:18; [ver. 29] does not come into judgment, but #1 John 3:14has passed from death to life.
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, # See ch. 4:21, 23 an hour is coming, and is now here, when # See Eph. 2:1, 5 the dead will hear # [ch. 11:43] the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear # See Eph. 2:1, 5 will live. 26#[ch. 6:57] For as the Father has life in himself, #See ch. 1:4; 17:2so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he #ver. 22has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for #[See ver. 25 above] an hour is coming when #ch. 11:24; 1 Cor. 15:52; [ch. 11:44, 45]all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, #See Dan. 12:2those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Witnesses to Jesus
30 # ver. 19; ch. 8:28; 14:10 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and # ch. 8:16 my judgment is just, because # ch. 4:34; 6:38; [ch. 7:18; Rom. 15:3] I seek not my own will # See Matt. 26:39 but the will of him who sent me. 31#[ch. 8:13, 14, 18, 54; 18:21]If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is #ver. 37 another who bears witness about me, and #ch. 7:28, 29I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33#See ch. 1:7, 19You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34Not that #1 John 5:9the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and #2 Pet. 1:19 shining lamp, and #[Matt. 13:20; 21:26]you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36But #[See ver. 34 above] the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For #ch. 10:25, 38; 14:11; 15:24; [ch. 2:23; Matt. 11:4] the works that the Father has given me #See ch. 4:34 to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, #[ch. 3:2] bear witness about me that #See ch. 3:17the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me #ch. 8:18; [Matt. 3:17] has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, #See ch. 1:18his form you have never seen, 38and #[1 John 2:14; 4:13, 14; 5:10]you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39#[Acts 17:11; 2 Tim. 3:15] You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and #See Luke 24:27it is they that bear witness about me, 40yet #ver. 43; ch. 3:19; 7:17; [Matt. 23:37; Luke 13:34]you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41#ver. 34; [Matt. 6:1, 2; 1 Thess. 2:6]I do not receive glory from people. 42But #See ch. 2:24, 25 I know that you do not have #Luke 11:42; See Jude 21the love of God within you. 43I have come #ch. 10:25; 12:13; 17:12 in my Father’s name, and #ch. 1:11; 3:11, 32 you do not receive me. #[Matt. 24:5]If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and #Rom. 2:29 do not seek the glory that comes from #ch. 17:3the only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, #[ch. 9:28, 29; Rom. 2:17]on whom you have set your hope. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for #ver. 47; Num. 21:9; Deut. 18:15; Luke 24:27; [ch. 12:41]he wrote of me. 47But #[Luke 16:31]if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda
1After #Lev. 23:2; Deut. 16:16this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus #John 2:13went up to Jerusalem. 2Now there is in Jerusalem #Neh. 3:1, 32; 12:39by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
7The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
8Jesus said to him, #Matt. 9:6; Mark 2:11; Luke 5:24“Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
And #John 9:14that day was the Sabbath. 10The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; #Ex. 20:10; Neh. 13:19; Jer. 17:21, 22; Matt. 12:2; Mark 2:24; Luke 6:2it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
11He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
12Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13But the one who was #Luke 13:14; 22:51healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. #Matt. 12:45; (Mark 2:5); John 8:11Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
15The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Honor the Father and the Son
16For this reason the Jews #Luke 4:29; John 8:37; 10:39persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, #(John 9:4; 17:4)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
18Therefore the Jews #John 7:1, 19sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, #John 10:30; Phil. 2:6making Himself equal with God. 19Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, #Matt. 26:39; John 5:30; 6:38; 8:28; 12:49; 14:10the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20For #Matt. 3:17; John 3:35; 2 Pet. 1:17the Father loves the Son, and #(Matt. 11:27)shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, #Luke 7:14; 8:54; (John 11:25)even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22For the Father judges no one, but #Matt. 11:27; 28:18; (John 3:35; 17:2; Acts 17:31; 1 Pet. 4:5)has committed all judgment to the Son, 23that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. #Luke 10:16; 1 John 2:23He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Life and Judgment Are Through the Son
24“Most assuredly, I say to you, #John 3:16, 18; 6:47he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, #(1 John 3:14)but has passed from death into life. 25Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when #(Eph. 2:1, 5; Col. 2:13)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26For #Ps. 36:9as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have #(John 1:4; 14:6); 1 Cor. 15:45life in Himself, 27and #John 9:39; (Acts 10:42; 17:31)has given Him authority to execute judgment also, #Dan. 7:13because He is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will #(1 Thess. 4:15–17)hear His voice 29#Is. 26:19; (1 Cor. 15:52)and come forth—#Dan. 12:2; Matt. 25:46; Acts 24:15those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30#John 5:19I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because #Matt. 26:39; John 4:34; 6:38I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
The Fourfold Witness
31#John 8:14; Rev. 3:14“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. 32#(Matt. 3:17; John 8:18; 1 John 5:6)There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33You have sent to John, #(John 1:15, 19, 27, 32)and he has borne witness to the truth. 34Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35He was the burning and #2 Sam. 21:17; 2 Pet. 1:19shining lamp, and #Matt. 13:20; Mark 6:20you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36But #1 John 5:9I have a greater witness than John’s; for #John 3:2; 10:25; 17:4the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very #John 9:16; 10:38works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37And the Father Himself, who sent Me, #Matt. 3:17; John 6:27; 8:18has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, #Deut. 4:12; John 1:18; 1 Tim. 1:17; 1 John 4:12nor seen His form. 38But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39#Is. 8:20; 34:16; Luke 16:29; Acts 17:11You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and #Deut. 18:15, 18; Luke 24:27these are they which testify of Me. 40#(John 1:11; 3:19)But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
41#John 5:44; 7:18; 1 Thess. 2:6“I do not receive honor from men. 42But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44#John 12:43How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek #(Rom. 2:29)the honor that comes from the only God? 45Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; #Rom. 2:12there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; #(Gen. 3:15); Deut. 18:15, 18; John 1:45; Acts 26:22for he wrote about Me. 47But if you #Luke 16:29, 31do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
