The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
1After this there was a #See ch. 6:4feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is in Jerusalem by #Neh. 3:1, 32; 12:39the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic#5:2 Or Hebrew called Bethesda,#5:2 Some manuscripts Bethsaida which has five roofed colonnades. 3In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and #Matt. 12:10paralyzed.#5:3 Some manuscripts insert, wholly or in part, waiting for the moving of the water; 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had 5One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8Jesus said to him, #Matt. 9:6, 7; Mark 2:9, 11, 12; Luke 5:24, 25“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9#[See ver. 8 above] And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
# ch. 9:14 Now that day was the Sabbath. 10So the Jews#5:10 The Greek word Ioudaioi refers specifically here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, who opposed Jesus in that time; also verses 15, 16, 18 said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and #Ex. 20:10; Neh. 13:19; Jer. 17:21, 22; [ch. 7:23; 9:16; Matt. 12:2; Mark 2:24; 3:4; Luke 6:2; 13:14]it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for #[ch. 6:15]Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! #[ch. 8:11] Sin no more, #[Ezra 9:14]that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16And this was why the Jews #ch. 15:20; [Acts 9:4, 5] were persecuting Jesus, #ch. 7:23; 9:16because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus Is Equal with God
18This was why the Jews #See ch. 7:1 were seeking all the more to kill him, #See ch. 10:33 because not only was he #ver. 16 breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God #[Rom. 8:32] his own Father, #Phil. 2:6making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
19So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, #See ver. 30 the Son #[ch. 16:13]can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father#5:19 Greek he does, that the Son does likewise. 20For #ch. 3:35; 10:17; 15:9, 10; 17:23-26; [Matt. 3:17] the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And #[ch. 14:12] greater works than these will he show him, so that #ch. 7:21you may marvel. 21For as the Father #[Deut. 32:39; 2 Cor. 1:9] raises the dead and #Rom. 4:17; 8:11 gives them life, so #[ch. 6:33; 11:25]; See 1 Cor. 15:45 also the Son gives life #[Rom. 9:18]to whom he will. 22#[Acts 17:31] For the Father judges no one, but #ver. 27; ch. 9:39; Acts 10:42; [ch. 3:17]; See ch. 17:2has given all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son, just as they #ch. 8:49 honor the Father. #Luke 10:16; [ch. 15:23; 1 John 2:23]Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, #[ch. 8:51] whoever hears my word and #ch. 20:31; 1 John 5:9-13; [ch. 3:15, 36; 12:44] believes him who sent me has eternal life. He #ch. 3:18; [ver. 29] does not come into judgment, but #1 John 3:14has passed from death to life.
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, # See ch. 4:21, 23 an hour is coming, and is now here, when # See Eph. 2:1, 5 the dead will hear # [ch. 11:43] the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear # See Eph. 2:1, 5 will live. 26#[ch. 6:57] For as the Father has life in himself, #See ch. 1:4; 17:2so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he #ver. 22has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for #[See ver. 25 above] an hour is coming when #ch. 11:24; 1 Cor. 15:52; [ch. 11:44, 45]all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, #See Dan. 12:2those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Witnesses to Jesus
30 # ver. 19; ch. 8:28; 14:10 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and # ch. 8:16 my judgment is just, because # ch. 4:34; 6:38; [ch. 7:18; Rom. 15:3] I seek not my own will # See Matt. 26:39 but the will of him who sent me. 31#[ch. 8:13, 14, 18, 54; 18:21]If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is #ver. 37 another who bears witness about me, and #ch. 7:28, 29I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33#See ch. 1:7, 19You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34Not that #1 John 5:9the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and #2 Pet. 1:19 shining lamp, and #[Matt. 13:20; 21:26]you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36But #[See ver. 34 above] the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For #ch. 10:25, 38; 14:11; 15:24; [ch. 2:23; Matt. 11:4] the works that the Father has given me #See ch. 4:34 to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, #[ch. 3:2] bear witness about me that #See ch. 3:17the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me #ch. 8:18; [Matt. 3:17] has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, #See ch. 1:18his form you have never seen, 38and #[1 John 2:14; 4:13, 14; 5:10]you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39#[Acts 17:11; 2 Tim. 3:15] You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and #See Luke 24:27it is they that bear witness about me, 40yet #ver. 43; ch. 3:19; 7:17; [Matt. 23:37; Luke 13:34]you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41#ver. 34; [Matt. 6:1, 2; 1 Thess. 2:6]I do not receive glory from people. 42But #See ch. 2:24, 25 I know that you do not have #Luke 11:42; See Jude 21the love of God within you. 43I have come #ch. 10:25; 12:13; 17:12 in my Father’s name, and #ch. 1:11; 3:11, 32 you do not receive me. #[Matt. 24:5]If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and #Rom. 2:29 do not seek the glory that comes from #ch. 17:3the only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, #[ch. 9:28, 29; Rom. 2:17]on whom you have set your hope. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for #ver. 47; Num. 21:9; Deut. 18:15; Luke 24:27; [ch. 12:41]he wrote of me. 47But #[Luke 16:31]if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

The Healing at Bethesda
1Later on there was a Jewish feast (festival), and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, there is a #5:2 In 1888, the location of this pool with its porticoes, as described in this verse, was uncovered.pool, which is called in Hebrew (Jewish Aramaic) Bethesda, having five porticoes (alcoves, colonnades). 3In these porticoes lay a great number of people who were sick, blind, lame, withered, #5:3 Early mss do not contain the remainder of v 3, nor v 4.[waiting for the stirring of the water; 4for an angel of the Lord went down into the pool at appointed seasons and stirred up the water; the first one to go in after the water was stirred was healed of his disease.] 5There was a certain man there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus noticed him lying there [helpless], knowing that he had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to get well?” 7The invalid answered, “Sir, I have no one to put me in the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am coming [to get into it myself], someone else steps down ahead of me.” 8Jesus said to him, “Get up; pick up your pallet and walk.” 9Immediately the man was healed and recovered his strength, and #5:9 Under Jewish tradition regarding the Sabbath, the man could have been stoned to death for this act.picked up his pallet and walked.
Now that day was the Sabbath. 10So the Jews kept saying to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and you are not #5:10 The complex Jewish restrictions regarding work on the Sabbath were man-made rules and most were not supported by OT Scripture.permitted to pick up your pallet [because it is unlawful].” 11He answered them, “The Man who healed me and gave me back my strength was the One who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’ ” 12They asked him, “Who is the Man who told you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away [unnoticed] since there was a crowd in that place. 14Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16For this reason the Jews began to persecute Jesus continually because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now [He has never ceased working], and I too am working.”
Jesus’ Equality with God
18This made the Jews more determined than ever to kill Him, for not only was He breaking the Sabbath [from their viewpoint], but He was also calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
19So Jesus answered them by saying, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the Son #5:19 Jesus uses the analogy of a son learning a trade from his father to show the religious leaders that when they condemn what He does, they are condemning the Father as well.can do nothing of Himself [of His own accord], unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever things the Father does, the Son [in His turn] also does in the same way. 20For the Father dearly loves the Son and shows Him everything that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will be filled with wonder. 21Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life [and allows them to live on], even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment [that is, the prerogative of judging] to the Son [placing it entirely into His hands], 23so that all will give honor (reverence, homage) to the Son just as they give honor to the Father. [In fact] the one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who has sent Him.
24 “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the person who hears My word [the one who heeds My message], and believes and trusts in Him who sent Me, has (possesses now) eternal life [that is, eternal life actually begins—the believer is transformed], and does not come into judgment and condemnation, but has passed [over] from death into life.
Two Resurrections
25 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, a time is coming and is [here] now, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. 26For just as the Father has life in Himself [and is self-existent], even so He has given to the Son to have life in Himself [and be self-existent]. 27And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is a Son of Man [sinless humanity, qualifying Him to sit in judgment over mankind]. [Dan 7:13, 14] 28Do not be surprised at this; for a time is coming when all those who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29and they will come out—those who did good things [will come out] to a resurrection of [new] life, but those who did evil things [will come out] to a resurrection of judgment [that is, to be sentenced]. [Dan 12:2; Rev 20:11-15]
30 “I can do nothing on my own initiative or authority. Just as I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just (fair, righteous, unbiased), because I do not seek My own will, but only the will of Him who sent Me.
31 “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not # 5:31 I.e. admissible as legal evidence. valid. 32There is another [My Father] who testifies about Me, and I know [without any doubt] that His testimony on My behalf is true and valid.
Testimony of John
33 You have sent [an inquiry] to #5:33 All references to “John” in this Gospel refer to John the Baptist. See note 1:6.John [the Baptist]and he has testified [as an eyewitness] to the truth. 34But the testimony I receive is not from man [a merely human witness]; but I say these things so that you may be saved [that is, have eternal life]. 35John was the lamp that kept on burning and shining [to show you the way], and you were willing for a while to rejoice in his light. [John 1:23-25]
Testimony of Works
36 But the testimony which I have is far greater than the testimony of John; for the works that the Father has given Me to finish—the very same works [that is, the miracles and proofs of My deity] that I am [now] doing—testify about Me, [by providing evidence] that the Father has sent Me.
Testimony of the Father
37 And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form [His majesty and greatness—what He is like]. 38You do not have His word (Scripture) abiding in you [actually living in your hearts and minds], because you do not believe in Him whom He has sent.
Testimony of the Scripture
39 # 5:39 Or Search the Scriptures! The Greek form found here can be either a command or a statement (indicative mood). You search and keep on searching and examining the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and yet it is those [very Scriptures] that testify about Me; 40and still you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41I do not receive glory and approval from men; 42but I know you and recognize that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43I have come in My Father’s name and with His power, and you do not receive Me [because your minds are closed]; but if another comes in his own name and with no authority or power except his own, you will receive him and give your approval to an imposter. 44How can you believe [in Me], when you [seek and] receive glory and approval from one another, and yet you do not seek the glory and approval which comes from the one and only God? 45Do not think that I [am the One who] will accuse you before the Father. There [already] is one who accuses you: Moses, [the very one] in whom you have placed your hope [for salvation]. 46For if you believed and relied on [the Scriptures written by] Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me [personally]. [Gen 3:15; 22:18; 49:10; Num 24:17; Deut 18:15] 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
