Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1Now #ch. 12:1 before #See ch. 6:4 the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that #See ch. 12:23 his hour had come #ver. 3; ch. 16:28 to depart out of this world to the Father, #ver. 34 having loved #ch. 1:11; 17:6, 9-11his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2During supper, when #ver. 11, 27; [Acts 5:3]; See ch. 6:70, 71the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3Jesus, knowing #See ch. 17:2; Matt. 11:27; Rev. 2:27 that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that #ch. 8:42; 16:28 he had come from God and #See ch. 14:12was going back to God, 4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, #[ch. 21:7; Luke 22:27]tied it around his waist. 5Then he #[2 Kgs. 3:11]poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7#[ver. 36] Jesus answered him, “What I am doing #ver. 12; [ch. 12:16; 15:15]you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8#[Matt. 16:22] Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, #[1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5; Heb. 10:22]“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, #See Gen. 18:4 except for his feet,#13:10 Some manuscripts omit except for his feet but is completely clean. And #ch. 15:3 you#13:10 The Greek words for you in this verse are plural are clean, #ver. 18but not every one of you.” 11#ver. 2; ch. 6:64; See ch. 2:24, 25For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12When he had washed their feet and #ver. 4 put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, #ver. 7“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13#Luke 6:46 You call me #Matt. 23:8, 10; 1 Cor. 8:6; 12:3; Phil. 2:11Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, #1 Tim. 5:10; [1 Pet. 5:5]you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have given you an example, #See Matt. 11:29that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16Truly, truly, I say to you, #ch. 15:20; Matt. 10:24a servant#13:16 Or bondservant, or slave (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface) is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, #See Luke 11:28; James 1:22blessed are you if you do them. 18#ver. 10, 11 I am not speaking of all of you; I know #ch. 6:70; 15:16, 19; [Mark 3:13; Luke 6:13; Acts 1:2] whom I have chosen. But #[ch. 17:12]; See Matt. 1:22 the Scripture will be fulfilled,#13:18 Greek But in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled#Cited from Ps. 41:9; [ver. 26; Matt. 26:23]‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19#ch. 14:29; 16:4I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20Truly, truly, I say to you, #See Matt. 10:40whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
One of You Will Betray Me
21After saying these things, #ch. 12:27 Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, #Matt. 26:21; Mark 14:18; Luke 22:21 “Truly, truly, I say to you, #Acts 1:17one of you will betray me.” 22#Luke 22:23The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23#ch. 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table #[Luke 16:22 (Gk.)]at Jesus’ side,#13:23 Greek in the bosom of Jesus 24so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus#13:24 Greek lacks Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25#Mark 4:36 So that disciple, #ch. 21:20 (Gk.)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26Jesus answered, #Matt. 26:23; Mark 14:20 “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread #Ruth 2:14 when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, #[Matt. 26:25] he gave it to Judas, #ch. 6:71the son of Simon Iscariot. 27Then after he had taken the morsel, #Luke 22:3; [ver. 2; 1 Cor. 11:27] Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, #[Luke 12:50]“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29Some thought that, #ch. 12:6 because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need #ver. 1 for the feast,” or that he should #ch. 12:5give something to the poor. 30So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. #[1 Sam. 28:8]And it was night.
A New Commandment
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, #See ch. 7:39 “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and #ch. 14:13; 15:8; 17:1, 4; 1 Pet. 4:11God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him, #ch. 17:1, 5 God will also glorify him in himself, and #See ch. 12:23glorify him at once. 33Little children, #See ch. 7:33 yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just #ch. 7:34; 8:21as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34#1 John 2:7, 8; 3:11; 2 John 5 A new commandment #ch. 15:12, 17; 1 John 3:23; 4:21 I give to you, #Lev. 19:18; Rom. 13:8; Col. 3:14; 1 Thess. 4:9; 1 Tim. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:22 that you love one another: #ch. 15:12; Eph. 5:2; 1 John 4:10, 11just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35#[1 John 3:14; 4:20]By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” #[ver. 7] Jesus answered him, “Where I am going #[ch. 7:34; 14:2] you cannot follow me now, #ch. 21:18, 19; 2 Pet. 1:14but you will follow afterward.” 37#Matt. 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; Luke 22:33, 34Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, #ch. 18:27the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

John 13
13
1And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who [are] in the world — to the end he loved them.
2And supper being come, the devil already having put [it] into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up,
3Jesus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him — into [his] hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth,
4doth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself;
5afterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded.
6He cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, ‘Sir, thou — dost thou wash my feet?’
7Jesus answered and said to him, ‘That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;’
8Peter saith to him, ‘Thou mayest not wash my feet — to the age.’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;’
9Simon Peter saith to him, ‘Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.’
10Jesus saith to him, ‘He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;’
11for he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, ‘Ye are not all clean.’
12When, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, ‘Do ye know what I have done to you?
13ye call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am;
14if then I did wash your feet — the Lord and the Teacher — ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15‘For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do;
16verily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;
17if these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them;
18not concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel.
19‘From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he];
20verily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.’
21These things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, ‘Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;’
22the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh.
23And there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving;
24Simon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh,
25and that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, ‘Sir, who is it?’
26Jesus answereth, ‘That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;’ and having dipped the morsel, he giveth [it] to Judas of Simon, Iscariot.
27And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, ‘What thou dost — do quickly;’
28and none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him,
29for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, ‘Buy what we have need of for the feast;’ or that he may give something to the poor;
30having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night.
31When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, ‘Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him;
32if God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him.
33‘Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews — Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say [it] now.
34‘A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another;
35in this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.’
36Simon Peter saith to him, ‘Sir, whither dost thou go away?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.’
37Peter saith to him, ‘Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;’
38Jesus answered him, ‘Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.’
