Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1Now #ch. 12:1 before #See ch. 6:4 the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that #See ch. 12:23 his hour had come #ver. 3; ch. 16:28 to depart out of this world to the Father, #ver. 34 having loved #ch. 1:11; 17:6, 9-11his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2During supper, when #ver. 11, 27; [Acts 5:3]; See ch. 6:70, 71the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3Jesus, knowing #See ch. 17:2; Matt. 11:27; Rev. 2:27 that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that #ch. 8:42; 16:28 he had come from God and #See ch. 14:12was going back to God, 4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, #[ch. 21:7; Luke 22:27]tied it around his waist. 5Then he #[2 Kgs. 3:11]poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7#[ver. 36] Jesus answered him, “What I am doing #ver. 12; [ch. 12:16; 15:15]you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8#[Matt. 16:22] Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, #[1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5; Heb. 10:22]“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, #See Gen. 18:4 except for his feet,#13:10 Some manuscripts omit except for his feet but is completely clean. And #ch. 15:3 you#13:10 The Greek words for you in this verse are plural are clean, #ver. 18but not every one of you.” 11#ver. 2; ch. 6:64; See ch. 2:24, 25For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12When he had washed their feet and #ver. 4 put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, #ver. 7“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13#Luke 6:46 You call me #Matt. 23:8, 10; 1 Cor. 8:6; 12:3; Phil. 2:11Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, #1 Tim. 5:10; [1 Pet. 5:5]you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have given you an example, #See Matt. 11:29that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16Truly, truly, I say to you, #ch. 15:20; Matt. 10:24a servant#13:16 Or bondservant, or slave (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface) is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, #See Luke 11:28; James 1:22blessed are you if you do them. 18#ver. 10, 11 I am not speaking of all of you; I know #ch. 6:70; 15:16, 19; [Mark 3:13; Luke 6:13; Acts 1:2] whom I have chosen. But #[ch. 17:12]; See Matt. 1:22 the Scripture will be fulfilled,#13:18 Greek But in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled#Cited from Ps. 41:9; [ver. 26; Matt. 26:23]‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19#ch. 14:29; 16:4I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20Truly, truly, I say to you, #See Matt. 10:40whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
One of You Will Betray Me
21After saying these things, #ch. 12:27 Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, #Matt. 26:21; Mark 14:18; Luke 22:21 “Truly, truly, I say to you, #Acts 1:17one of you will betray me.” 22#Luke 22:23The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23#ch. 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table #[Luke 16:22 (Gk.)]at Jesus’ side,#13:23 Greek in the bosom of Jesus 24so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus#13:24 Greek lacks Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25#Mark 4:36 So that disciple, #ch. 21:20 (Gk.)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26Jesus answered, #Matt. 26:23; Mark 14:20 “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread #Ruth 2:14 when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, #[Matt. 26:25] he gave it to Judas, #ch. 6:71the son of Simon Iscariot. 27Then after he had taken the morsel, #Luke 22:3; [ver. 2; 1 Cor. 11:27] Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, #[Luke 12:50]“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29Some thought that, #ch. 12:6 because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need #ver. 1 for the feast,” or that he should #ch. 12:5give something to the poor. 30So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. #[1 Sam. 28:8]And it was night.
A New Commandment
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, #See ch. 7:39 “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and #ch. 14:13; 15:8; 17:1, 4; 1 Pet. 4:11God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him, #ch. 17:1, 5 God will also glorify him in himself, and #See ch. 12:23glorify him at once. 33Little children, #See ch. 7:33 yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just #ch. 7:34; 8:21as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34#1 John 2:7, 8; 3:11; 2 John 5 A new commandment #ch. 15:12, 17; 1 John 3:23; 4:21 I give to you, #Lev. 19:18; Rom. 13:8; Col. 3:14; 1 Thess. 4:9; 1 Tim. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:22 that you love one another: #ch. 15:12; Eph. 5:2; 1 John 4:10, 11just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35#[1 John 3:14; 4:20]By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” #[ver. 7] Jesus answered him, “Where I am going #[ch. 7:34; 14:2] you cannot follow me now, #ch. 21:18, 19; 2 Pet. 1:14but you will follow afterward.” 37#Matt. 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; Luke 22:33, 34Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, #ch. 18:27the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

John 13
13
1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and goeth unto God, 4riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments; and he took a towel, and girded himself. 5Then he poureth water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6So he cometh to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter. 8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10Jesus saith to him, He that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11For he knew him that should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and sat down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have given you an example, that ye also should do as I have done to you. 16Verily, verily, I say unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord; neither one that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them. 18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me. 19From henceforth I tell you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 20Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22The disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23There was at the table reclining in Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24Simon Peter therefore beckoneth to him, and saith unto him, Tell us who it is of whom he speaketh. 25He leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26Jesus therefore answereth, He it is, for whom I shall dip the sop, and give it him. So when he had dipped the sop, he taketh and giveth it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27And after the sop, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore saith unto him, What thou doest, do quickly. 28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29For some thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus said unto him, Buy what things we have need of for the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30He then having received the sop went out straightway: and it was night.
31When therefore he was gone out, Jesus saith, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him; 32and God shall glorify him in himself, and straightway shall he glorify him. 33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say unto you. 34A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow afterwards. 37Peter saith unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee even now? I will lay down my life for thee. 38Jesus answereth, Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
