Evil in the Land
1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2#ch. 26:2“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. 3Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: #ch. 18:11; 26:13Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4#[ver. 8]Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’
5“For if you truly #ch. 22:3 amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly #Deut. 24:14execute justice one with another, 6if you #[See ver. 5 above] do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, #[See ver. 5 above] or shed innocent blood in this place, #ch. 13:10; 25:6; Deut. 6:14and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7#Deut. 4:40 then I will let you dwell in this place, #ch. 3:18in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.
8“Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9#Hos. 4:1, 2 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, #ch. 5:2 swear falsely, #ch. 1:16 make offerings to Baal, #[See ver. 6 above]and go after other gods that you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house, #ch. 32:34; 34:15which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? 11#Isa. 56:7 Has this house, #[See ver. 10 above] which is called by my name, #Cited Matt. 21:13; Mark 11:17; Luke 19:46; [Ezek. 7:22]become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord. 12Go now to #Judg. 18:31; 1 Sam. 1:3 my place that was in Shiloh, #Deut. 12:11 where I made my name dwell at first, and #ch. 26:6; Ps. 78:60; See 1 Sam. 4:3-12see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel. 13And now, because you have done all these things, declares the Lord, and #ver. 25; 2 Chr. 36:15 when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and #Prov. 1:24; [ver. 27; Isa. 50:2; 65:12]when I called you, you did not answer, 14therefore I will do to #Deut. 12:5; 1 Kgs. 9:7 the house #[See ver. 10 above] that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, #[See ver. 12 above]as I did to Shiloh. 15#[See ver. 14 above] And I will cast you out of my sight, #2 Kgs. 17:6, 23 as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of #Ps. 78:67; Hos. 4:17; 5:3, 9; 6:4; 12:1Ephraim.
16“As for you, #ch. 11:14; 14:11; [Ex. 32:10; Deut. 9:14; 1 John 5:16]do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. 17Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, #Hos. 7:4 and the women knead dough, to #ch. 44:17, 19 make cakes for #[2 Kgs. 23:13] the queen of heaven. And #ch. 19:13 they pour out drink offerings to other gods, #ch. 11:17; Deut. 32:16, 21; 1 Kgs. 14:9; 16:2; 2 Chr. 34:25to provoke me to anger. 19#[Job 35:6] Is it I whom they provoke? declares the Lord. Is it not themselves, #ch. 51:51to their own shame? 20Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, #ch. 42:18; 44:6; 2 Chr. 34:25; Lam. 4:11 my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; #ch. 17:27it will burn and not be quenched.”
21Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: #See ch. 6:20“Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them #Hos. 6:6concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23But this command I gave them: #ch. 11:4, 7; Ex. 15:26; Deut. 6:3 ‘Obey my voice, and #Lev. 26:12 I will be your God, and you shall be my people. #Deut. 5:33 And walk in all the way that I command you, #ch. 42:6; Deut. 4:40that it may be well with you.’ 24#Ps. 81:11 But they did not obey or incline their ear, #Ps. 81:12 but walked in their own counsels and #[ch. 3:17; Hos. 4:16] the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and #ch. 2:19, 27; 8:5; 15:6; 32:33went backward and not forward. 25From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, #2 Chr. 36:15, 16I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day. 26#[See ver. 24 above] Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, #2 Chr. 30:8 but stiffened their neck. #ch. 16:12They did worse than their fathers.
27 # ch. 1:17 “So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. #[ver. 13]You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; #ch. 9:3truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.
29 # [Job 1:20] “‘Cut off your hair and cast it away;
raise a lamentation on #See ch. 3:2the bare heights,
for the Lord has rejected and forsaken
the generation of his wrath.’
The Valley of Slaughter
30“For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set #ch. 32:34; Ezek. 5:11; 7:20; [ch. 19:5; 2 Kgs. 21:4, 7] their detestable things in the house #See ver. 10that is called by my name, to #ch. 32:34; Ezek. 5:11; 7:20; [ch. 19:5; 2 Kgs. 21:4, 7] defile it. 31And they have built the high places of #2 Kgs. 23:10 Topheth, which is in #[ch. 31:40; Josh. 18:16] the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, #Ps. 106:38 to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, #Deut. 17:3; [ver. 21, 22]which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. 32#ch. 19:6 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called #[See ver. 31 above] Topheth, or #[See ver. 31 above] the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; #ch. 19:11; [Ezek. 6:5]for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere. 33#ch. 12:9; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20; Deut. 28:26; Ps. 79:2 And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air, and for the beasts of the earth, #[Isa. 17:2]and none will frighten them away. 34#ch. 16:9; 25:10; Ps. 78:63; Isa. 24:7, 8; Rev. 18:22, 23; [Ezek. 26:13; Hos. 2:11] And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, #ch. 27:17; 44:2, 6; Lev. 26:31, 33for the land shall become a waste.

Message at the Temple Gate
1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house and proclaim there this word and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter by these gates to worship the Lord.’ ” 3Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Change your ways and your behavior, and I will let you live in this place. 4Do not trust in the deceptive and lying words [of the false prophets who claim that Jerusalem will be protected by God because of the temple], saying, ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’ 5For if you thoroughly change your ways and your behavior, if you thoroughly and honestly practice justice between a man and his neighbor, 6if you do not oppress the transient and the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood [by oppression and by unjust judicial murders] in Jerusalem, nor follow after other gods to your own ruin, 7then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers [to live in] forever and ever.
8“Behold, you are trusting in deceptive and useless words that bring no benefit. 9Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear [oaths] falsely, offer sacrifices or burn incense to Baal, and follow after other gods that you have not known, 10and [then dare to] come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My #7:10 The “Name” of God is equivalent to His gracious presence in passages such as this one. The place where God puts His Name is the place where He chooses to dwell.Name, and say, ‘We are protected and set free [by this act of religious ritual]!’—only to go on with this wickedness and these disgusting and loathsome things? 11Has this house, which is called by My Name, become a den of robbers in your eyes [a place of retreat for you between acts of violence]? Behold, I Myself have seen it,” says the Lord.
12“But go now to My place which was in Shiloh [in Ephraim], where I first set My Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel. [1 Sam 4:10-18] 13And now, because you have done all these things,” says the Lord, “and I spoke [persistently] to you, even rising up early and speaking, but you did not listen, and I called you but you did not answer, 14therefore, I will do to this house (the temple) which is called by My Name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, just as I did to Shiloh. 15I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brothers (relatives through Jacob), all the descendants of Ephraim.
16“Therefore, do not pray for this people [of Judah] or lift up a cry or entreaty for them or make intercession to Me, for I do not hear you. 17Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough to make cakes for the #7:18 A goddess of fertility, probably the Babylonian title for Ishtar. She is identified with the planet Venus. Offerings to this goddess included cakes made in the shape of a star (44:19).queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods that they may offend and provoke Me to anger. 19Do they offend and provoke Me to anger?” says the Lord. “Is it not themselves [they offend], to their own shame?” 20Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and [the fire will] not be quenched.”
21Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat the meat. 22For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices. 23But this thing I did command them: ‘Listen to and obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, so that it may be well with you.’ 24But they did not obey Me or bend their ear [to hear Me], but followed the counsels and the stubbornness of their [own] evil heart (mind), and [they turned and] went backward instead of forward. 25Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have [persistently] sent you all My servants the prophets, sending them daily, early [and late]. 26Yet they did not listen to Me and obey Me or bend their ear [to hear Me], but stiffened their neck; they did more evil and behaved worse than their fathers.
27“You shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you; and you shall [also] call to them, but they will not answer you. 28You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction and warning; truth and faithfulness have perished and have completely vanished from their mouths.
29‘Cut off your hair [your crown, O Jerusalem] and throw it away,
And take up a mournful cry on the barren heights,
For the Lord has rejected and abandoned
The generation of His wrath.’
30For the children of Judah have done evil in My sight,” says the Lord; “they have set their disgusting and shamefully vile things in the house which is called by My Name, to defile it. 31They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben-hinnom (son of Hinnom), to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire [to honor Molech, the fire god]—which I did not command, nor did it come into My heart (mind). [Lev 18:21; Josh 15:8; 2 Kin 16:2, 3; 21:1, 6; Is 30:33]
32“Therefore, behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of the Slaughter, for [in bloody warfare] they will bury [the dead] in Topheth until there is no more room. [Jer 19:6] 33And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth and no one will frighten them away. 34Then I will cause the voices of joy and gladness, and the voices of the bridegroom and the bride to vanish from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem; for the land will become a ruin—a wasteland.
