Jeremiah Taken to Egypt
1When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, 2Azariah the son of #ch. 42:1 Hoshaiah and #See ch. 40:8 Johanan the son of Kareah and #Ps. 86:14; Isa. 13:11; Mal. 4:1 all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, #ch. 42:19‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ 3but #See ch. 32:12 Baruch the son of Neriah #[ch. 38:22] has set you against us, #[ch. 37:13]to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” 4So #[See ver. 2 above] Johanan the son of Kareah and all #ch. 40:13the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took #[ch. 40:11, 12]all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6#ch. 44:20 the men, the women, the children, #See ch. 38:23 the princesses, and every person whom #ch. 39:10; 40:7 Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with #See ch. 39:14Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at #ch. 2:16; 44:1; 46:14; [Isa. 30:4]Tahpanhes.
8Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in #[See ver. 7 above]Tahpanhes: 9“Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in #[See ver. 7 above]Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, 10and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, #See ch. 25:9 my servant, #ch. 1:15and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11He shall come #ch. 44:13; 46:13 and strike the land of Egypt, #See ch. 15:2giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. 12#See ch. 17:27 I shall kindle a fire #ch. 46:25; Ezek. 30:13; [Ex. 12:12; Isa. 19:1] in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them #[ch. 48:7] and carry them away captive. #[Ps. 104:2; Isa. 49:18]And he shall clean the land of Egypt #[Ps. 104:2; Isa. 49:18]as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. 13He shall break the #[Ex. 23:24] obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, #[See ver. 12 above]and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”

Jeremiah 43

Chaldeans Invade Egypt
1But when Jeremiah had made an end of telling all the people all the words of Adonai their God—all these words for which Adonai their God had sent him to them—
2then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the insolent men responded, saying to Jeremiah: “You are telling a lie! Adonai our God has not sent you to say. ‘You must not go to Egypt to sojourn there.’
3Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, to give us over into the hand of the Chaldeans, so they may put us to death or carry us away as captives to Babylon!”
4So Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the forces and all the people, did not obey the voice of Adonai, to stay in the land of Judah.
5But Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the entire remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations where they had been driven to dwell in the land of Judah—
6the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, everyone that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah—
7and they went to the land of Egypt. For they did not obey the voice of Adonai. When they arrived at Tahpanhes
8the word of Adonai came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,
9“Take some large stones in your hand and hide them in the mortar in the brickwork at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah.
10Then say to them, thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot, the God of Israel: “I am about to send for and bring King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and I will set his throne over these stones where I have hid, and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.
11Yes, he will come, and will strike the land of Egypt. Those for death—to death! Those for exile—to exile! Those for the sword—to the sword!
12“I will also set fire to the houses of Egypt’s gods. He will burn them and carry them off. He will wrap himself up with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself up with his garment. Then he will depart from there victoriously.
13“He will also shatter the pillars of the temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, while houses of the gods of Egypt He will burn with fire.”
